  1. Even if we can't get fair value for them? Just trade them for the sake of trading them?
  2. Here you go: John Vogl ‏@BuffNewsVogl Sabres are still having closed-door meeting 15 minutes after latest loss ended. Not a surprise.
  3. That was record speed.
  4. More contract extensions.
  5. They played last night. The fact that this game is even 2-1 Winnipeg right now is proof that we suck.
  6. MacKinnon is probably going no.2 overall anyway so it's all good.
  7. This is the worst the Sabres have played since the first half of last season, or the first half of the season before, or most of the rest of the time since Summer 2007.
  8. The Honda Presidents Day commercial is total BS. Washington was roughly as tall as Lincoln; the guy they cast for him is like Tom Cruise sized.
  9. If Regehr is smart he asks to be traded to a contender at the deadline. No sense wasting another year of his career watching the playoffs from home.
  10. Careful. We just spent a day having a Gerbe lovefest.
  11. The Jets also played last night too. So......WTF?
  12. They're saying the Jets only had 4 scoring chances that period? Did they just count the breakaways?
  13. LOL at "Transformers" there. Nice.
  14. Just re-tweeted by Jeremy White. It belongs here (Avalanche) but it could fit into a lot of threads: Dave Davis ‏@DaveDavisHockey Hello from FNC. For those that keep track, there are Western Conf. scouts here from the Avalanche, Stars, Flames, Ducks, Wild & Blackhawks.
  15. Just for the record, some of us were smart enough to want him moved before the season began. Sucks when the fans are smarter than the GM.
  16. I feel like I've been saying this for at least the past two years. Darcy Regier has no vision for what his team should be and how it's going to win the Stanley Cup. We just sort of do whatever from year to year and hope that we're going to catch lightning in a bottle. How would you even describe a Darcy Regier hockey team? Big, tough, fast, strong defensively, dangerous offensively? None of the above. We're consistently mediocre though. I guess there's that.
  17. WTF? No Grigorenko would be really weird. I'm expecting a pretty decisive win tonight.

Also good enough to get Darcy a contract extension this season.

  20. WGR is way better than most of the local sports talk I've heard around the country.
  21. Forget it, he's rolling...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToWcEqQhnIU
  22. Fixed it for you.
  23. This is a completely valid strategy and something I've thought about a lot with Miller, Vanek, and Pominville all over 30 and with contracts expiring in a year. But it's not so easy to trade Player X for prospects and actually get fair value. Let's think about the Sabres trying to deal Vanek at the deadline this year, or this summer. The team that wants him is almost definitely a contender (or near contender) looking to put themselves over the top. But which of those teams is going to trade us a package that would actually be worth more to us than a re-signed Vanek for the next five years? Would the Chicago Blackhawks trade us Brandon Saad and their entire draft this summer for Vanek? Probably not, since I've never seen that many pieces move for one player. But would that even be a good trade for Buffalo? No. That's Saad (a good prospect), the ~30th overall pick in June, and a bunch of later picks in June -- basically nothing that would do as much for us the next few years as just having Vanek around. OK, would the Blackhawks deal their next five first round picks for Vanek? Again, no, they'd think that was crazy. But even that wouldn't be worth as much to us. That's five picks between 20th-30th overall, and generally tough to find top players there (though hopefully you'd find good players there). So what trade could actually make us BETTER? Well, you'd need at least one top-end, can't-miss prospect coming here. Those guys are super rare and the teams that have them are generally rebuilding and not looking to add a guy like Vanek. The simple way to look at any trade is that the team that acquired the single best player (or player that becomes the best player) is the winner. Getting that for a Vanek or Pominville or Miller is going to be tough, and I don't want to move them just to get a handful of "good" prospects that might be "good" players. We'd probably be better off just re-signing the stars that we have. Is anyone advocating a "roster of Folignos"? Of course not. The key is balance. We've never (as long as I've been a fan) had enough players of that ilk. That's certainly something we should work on, rather than getting one or two and then looking to trade them away. More importantly, having some Foligno types around opens the ice up for the guys with more offensive talent. It's not a coincidence that Ennis' best play as a Sabre happened with Foligno on his wing. With Armia and Grigorenko on the team next year, and Pominville, Vanek, Hodgson, Ennis, and Stafford probably sticking around, offensive talent is less of a need than guys like Foligno. We have Marcus Foligno and then one other guy in the entire organization (Girgensons) who might be able to bring that same game.
  24. Completely disagree with this part. Girgensons is supposed to be a power forward -- basically a Foligno but with more skill (we hope). Also, we absolutely should load up on guys with his combination of size, strength, and toughness. There's a weird notion around this board that we only need one or two of these guys and that's plenty (i.e. the "Foligno meant we didn't need Kassian" idea). Have we ever had a team with enough size/strength/toughness guys? No. Would it kill the Sabres to try to build one that way for once? This isn't a law of diminished returns thing. You literally can't be too big and tough. The same you way you can't ever be too good in net or too sound defensively or too skilled offensively. I would add as much of this as possible and try a strategy that we've never tried before.
  25. Kris Baker ‏@SabresProspects McNabb (PP) and Adam lit the lamp while Leggio stopped 30/30 as Rochester blanked Hamilton 2-0. Girgensons gets an assist in 2nd game back. Yeah, Zemgus!
