    Define "significant."

The 2 propositions aren't necessarily mutually exclusive.

Will Borgen at present is a 3rd pairing D and he MIGHT be a 2nd pairing stay at home guy.  That could be a valuable commodity for the Sabres (or somebody else) in the near future as the Sabres perennially need at least 1 more good stay at home defenseman than they have.  And '21-'22 is shaping up to follow that pattern as the only healthy SaH D-man they have is a raw rookie (with a great pedigree).

But Seattle just got to take the 4th best (in most cases aka a 2nd pairing) D-man from about 1/2 the league.  So, though the Sabres might miss him, he doesn't necessarily make Seattle's squad.

Nobody is saying that Borgen will be the 2nd coming of Mike Ramsey nor even Jake McCabe.  But that doesn't mean he would not be useful this season nor that he won't be even more useful the next few seasons.  It's the potential that people are mourning (for lack of a better term).

IF the Sabres take Power, in 2-3 years this could be a very imposing D with 2 (hopefully) studs, 2 solid stay at home guys, & 2 decent puck movers (2 of Jokiharju, Johnson, Bryson, & Pilut) & 2 of those as spares.  Get goaltending & we might have something to work with.

We need to improve scoring and goaltending, Power doesn't do any of that. Even moreso if Jack, Sam and Linus leave. Drafting a defenseman with limited offensive abilities makes no sense to me.

I'll be really disappointed of Sam goes. I really thought they'd keep him around at least till trade deadline. He showed leadership in the last of half of the season. He'd be a great guy to have on a young team.

Sam has said he doesn't want to be part of another rebuild so if Sam's going it likely means Eichel is too. *Smh* I hate this management right now if all this happens.

I see the appeal too, but I don’t see why he is a must get compared to other possible pieces.

He's a top 6 forward that still improving toss in Minny likely needs to let him go to get Eichel and stay under the cap. I mean I get people liking Rossi but he's small and unproven but I want a NHL player back for Eichel and see Fiala the best option.

I would have concerns long term about his covid situation, plus he missed a full year of training, who knows how far behind he is now?  we are also hypothesising how good he is going to be, We already know what Jack is.  Rossi will be lucky to reach 80% of what Jack is at full health.

I need Boldy to be part of that deal, if not the centerpiece

Boldy and Fiala are must gets if we trade with Minnesota, I think Kahkonen could be had too so long Seattle doesn't take him. Toss in a 1st rounder in 2021 and maybe another mid round pick on 2022.

It would be funny though, for the people who believe that Eichel demanded a trade, for Eichel to get totally dissed by the trade market.

I agree, I don't think Eichel demanded a trade and people misread what he was said there was a disconnect between him and the team. I think Eichel was just being honest with a question presented to him and the media ran with it that he wanted to be traded etc.

Well I personally think protecting Ullmark rather than trading for a goalie and protecting him is one more check in the fail column for KA. So far still waiting for some checks in the pass or good column. Pointless.

I think Miller gets taken ahead of Borgen but maybe there's a Kyle deal in the works. Certainly hope they don't give up too much of a sweetener for that.

We can still trade for one yet by protecting Ullmark he's showing the team does want him back. That said I'd talk to Seattle about taking Ben Bishop and offering them one of our three 2nd rounders for him.

A lot going on regarding Borgen.

Maybe he gets picked, maybe he doesn’t.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Seattle prefers and picks someone else.

I must have missed all of the people who think Borgen is going to be a star or a #1/2 D or whatever.  I thought the idea was that he could be the defensive guy to pair with an offensive D and provide toughness that the team lacks.  I’m still hopeful that he can do that and I’m not sure many people are expecting anything more than that.

To me Miller the better play as he's a better player and could yield more if wanted to trade him for more assets.

Does anybody know if a player traded before the expansion draft maybe traded back to his original team after the expansion draft?

I.e., could the Sabres trade a 7th for Allen & then get a 2nd-4th plus a 7th back from the Habs for him sometime later this summer?  Would increase the Sabres assets while leaving their options open on finding their starting pair.

This in kind of how we got Dominick Hasek as the then Winnipeg Jets didn't want to lose Stephane Beauregard in the expansion draft to Tampa or Ottawa so they shipped him to us for Ruutu, we than traded Beaurgard to Chicago for Hasek and the Blackhawks then shipped Beauregard to Winniped for Ruutu.

I'm not saying you but a very high percentage of people are overvaluing Eichel on this forum.

I think your Minny trade is dead on maybe 22 OA instead.  From the Rangers maybe Shesterkin, Jones, 16 OA.

Why is asking for a potential top line center and more over valuing Eichel? Who is in his prime and already under contract etc.  If a team wants value they have to give us at least the same value back if not more.

I think the Olofsson discussion could be a more interesting thread since the Eichel stuff just boils down to me thinking he doesn’t want to be here and that this team needs A LOT. It’s the reason I used to advocate for the Mariners to trade Felix Hernandez in his prime or other similar situations where a team treads water despite having what is viewed as a bonafide star at the top.

To me Olofsson is a top 6 forward preferably on the 2nd line as see him as a 25 goal scorer not a 30-40. We need more guys like him to improve as a team aka low round picks making and contributing in the NHL.
