If we do lose Reinhart and Eichel, we should try to sign Danault.

If we lose those them both we're in trouble so I go hard to sign Filip Forsberg.

That trade has 1 good prospect, 2 okay NHL guys, and an unknown pick. That's basically a slightly better ROR deal.

We need Rossi, Boldy, and then you go from there. A top tier center prospect or forward prospect has to be in the deal or you don't do it. It is why the NYR are completely unsuitable trade partners.

Byfield (maybe Turcotte), Rossi, Zegras, Newhook, Zary (maybe), Jarvis, guys in that level are what we need to start and then you work out the rest.

I really only think LA has the ammo. Even if they say no on Byfield, that gives you Turcotte, Kupari, Fagemo, Bjornfoot, Faber, Kaliyev, Grans, Vilardi as options to make a deal work while only taking back minimal salary.

I disagree, to me we need proven NHLers that can play on the first or second line. That's why I proposed my trade, toss in I wanted us to draft Boldy back in the day. Rossi is a question mark because of his size and hasn't shown anything in part because injury last season.

If Eichel and Reinhart stay - which is highly unlikely that we keep both- then Mitts is 3C.  I think Cozens can hang on as a winger although some time dominating the AHL could be possible and best for him.

Most likely case is that Reinhart does not sign and we trade him.  Eichel cries and we trade him.  Cozens plays in the NHL because he is better than what we have.

With the Sabres, what should happen and what does happen, are never in alignment.

I think if we trade Eichel for some good players Reinhart will stay. I know everyone talks about LA as a good team to deal with but think a better team might be Minnesota. As most feel they need a center, yet seem rather strong at LW. I'd love to see if can get Fiala and Eriksson El.

My concern if we trade Eichel for anyone:  If so many players are disgruntled on this team, what makes us think that anyone coming in via a trade would be gruntled?  I understand they would not have been through the last 10 wasted years here, but they surely are aware of the plight of the Sabres.  Who would be happy coming here at this moment?  Would trading one unhappy player for a few other soon-to-be unhappy players help us in the immediate?

I think if Eichel is moved it has to be for two proven players that at least under contract for 2 (or more seasons), 2 draft picks and a top 5 prospect. That way hopefully the two coming can have someone can relate too and with said contract status they can see how the team develops with them, if they bolt we can draft two replacements and safeguard a possible bust with a top end prospect too.

For sure. Unless something ridiculous is available (I'd hypothetically be interested in Matthew Tkachuk, for instance), leave forward alone. It needs to be supplemented (checking center, and a pugilist), but those are orbit adds. Leave this new core to blossom into whatever it's going to turn in to.

On that topic, no deals more than 2 years for any young player not named Dahlin. We don't truly know what's what yet, so cheap bridges everywhere!

Lastly, some cuts. Eakin/Okposo need to go. Eakin especially, but Okposo....it's over man. It's been sad to watch for a while. I'd prefer to waive both.

I agree just cut the dead weight and be done with it.

That doesn't it mean it was a good trade.

Connolly was known as a one-dimensional player, with huge potential upside on the offensive side of things, but nobody had any illusions as to his defensive game.

Peca was a great no. 2 centerman who could play in every situation. Yes he was a fan favorite, but don't let that take away from the fact that he had few, if any, weak spots in his game. It wasn't his fault that the Sabres didn't have a no. 1 center.

Fast forward 18 months, it's a different story completely, I agree. But nobody knew that, at the time.

Peca was a 3rd liner/short handed specialist. His agent Gerry Meehan called him more and that's what lead to the whole hold out fiasco to begin with. I hated it as a Peca fan (I still own his goat head jersey) but I sided with the Sabres in that dispute. Connolly was a better scorer than Peca yet Peca was a better leader, grinder etc.

Like I said, people who think of hockey as a heirarchy of lines will have trouble with it.

I know our coach preaches against numbered lines, so I doubt that kind of thinking would get in his way. I have no idea if Staal’s nose would get out of joint or not.

If both lines are getting equal time at even strength and Staal is playing on the PP, what hockey reasons make this a bad idea?

Forcing Staal on a line with unproven talent is a waste of his talent. Eaken's career high is 21 assists, sorry that isn't going to help Skinner get to 25 plus goals.

If we end up with ~4 mil, theoretically we could carry 22 players and save 700 000k on that 23rd man/3rd bench player. Potentially bridging the gap to a Kuemper like salary.

Also, just get rid of Montour.

Get rid of Miller first as don't think Mountour be expansion eligible with him on a one year deal.

Here’s one that might be tough to swallow for those locked into having a heirarchy of lines:

Stylistically, Cody Eakin is very good fit for Jeff Skinner. He’s fast, defensively responsible, offensively OK and generally thrives on chaos.

Also, Thompson, Staal and Cozens is pretty tantalizing mix of size, power and skill, both off the rush and in the offensive zone. It’s not hard to imagine the young wingers following Staal around like puppies for his nuggets of wisdom and the old vet being charged up by their skill and enthusiasm.

    Hall Eichel Olofsson

    Skinner Eakin Reinhart

    Thompson Staal Cozens

    Reider Girgensons Lazar Okposo

I can't see Staal accepting a role on the 3rd line and Eakin on the 2nd line? No on so many levels.

I want to say Peca, but the ending taints it (not saying it was all on him, by any means.)  Had they gotten a deal done in 2000, he could have been an easy choice.

If Peca didn't have that nasty holdout to go finish his career here he'd easily be my top guy. Yet looking back Mike Foligno was a favorite of mine during my childhood but ultimately the one guy I always respected before he became a Sabre and after he left was Chris Drury.

I’ll never understand why GM’s are adverse to offer sheeting other teams players. The rule is there, use it. Especially against division rivals.

Can you imagine if Belicheat had this option in his arsenal?

It's fear if a team does it opens up the can of worms that another team will do it to them. I agree it should be done more as to me draft picks, especially in the NHL, are over valued.

I view Hutton as being untradeable until he proves that he can play hockey again.

Best case scenario is his starting in Rochester and hopefully rehabbing his career. It is just as likely that he ends up on LTIR then we see him playing NHL games again.

Fair enough just as long as he doesn't suit up for the Sabres.

I think Reinhart is going to get Domi money...something along the lines of 2 years at $5.3M a year.

I think Olofsson will get Kubalik money...something like 2 years at $3.7M.

I think Ullmark will get Georgiev money....something like 2 years at $2.4M.

If that happens, with where our roster is now, that would leave us with around $1.5M in salary cap space (according to CapFriendly).

Ristolainen, Miller or Montour need to be traded to open up some cap space, if any other moves are expected.

Package Miller, Mitty, Hutton and maybe a prospect for a better goalie to split time with Ullmark.
