    My hot takes:

    1. #8 will not help the team this coming year.  If the Sabres do not acquire enough talent, keep 8, and miss the playoffs, then Jack Eichel asks for a trade.  Thus, much as I hate to trade the long-term for the short-term, this implies that the Sabres must trade #8, even somewhat devalued, for clear help NOW.

    2. Serves 8...

    1C AP flour

    1T C12H22O11

    2t baking powder

    1/2 t NaCl

    1 large egg

    3/4 C milk

    1/4 C melted butter

#8 typically shouldn't help their rookie year. The Sabres are still in a rebuild mold but with the addition of Staal we might have two lines assuming someone steps up on at RW on line 2. Yet we still need help on lines 3 and 4. Yet the biggest issue is we need a good goalie that can split time with time with UPL. As I'm done with Hutton unless want him to play 20 games at most.

Here's my draft hot take: Cole Perfetti is this year's Elias Petterson.

His skill level and hockey sense are being underrated, while size and skating issues are being overrated. A few years from now, people will be saying he should have gone higher.

    Got any to share?

Elias is a little bigger than Cole yet if that comes out true and the Sabres can get Cole it be a great add.

After McCabe's ruling if he goes to arbitration Buffalo will have 48 hrs in an additional buyout period.  I hope JBott is actively trying to shed cap via trade but if not who is most likely to be bought out.  Will this be necessary if Bogo is on LTIR to start the year?

Sobotka- $3.5 million-  cap hit would be $1.5 for this year and $1 for next year (saved $2 million this year but adds $1 million to next year)

Scandella- $4 million- cap hit would be $833K this year but $1.58 million for next ( saved $3.2 million this year but adds the $1.58 to next year)

I would hope he could get a 5th or 6th rd pick for Scandella and maybe retain $1 million.

Sobotka could be sent down and if he clears waivers, maybe he doesn't report terminating his contract.

Going to be interesting this next week...

I'd think Sobotka the obvious choice.

For the 100th time. Johnson has a full NTC. He has to want to come here rather than stay in Tampa. That seems...unlikely.

Tampa's seems stuck with all their NTCs, just trying to make something happen. In an ideal world we could trade Risto to Winnipeg for Connor and sign him to a short deal and shift Reinhart to 2C.

I really think everything is hinging on Point and Marner. Once that's decided a few UFA's can decide, trades can happen, etc.

Getting Gardiner would mean Scandella/McCabe are gone. And if they're gone we might be waiting on Gardiner to package Scandella/Ristolainen somewhere; say, Tampa Bay, who's waiting on Point, who's waiting on Marner

If we could get Tyler Johnson from Tampa I'd welcome it yet with us close to the cap it likely cost us Risto which wouldn't give us much cap room unless we could cap dump someone else. Maybe in a possible three way with Risto to Edmonton, McCabe goes to Tampa with Pulujujarvi and we get Johnson?

Labanc signed for 1 year, $1 mil. San Jose has Meier, Hertl, and Labanc locked up for under $12 million in cap space. Offer sheets are a thing, these guys were RFAs this year (Meier, Labanc) and last (Hertl). Why do teams let the Sharks do this?

I think it's a combination of fear and/or confidence. The fear is that they'll end up giving a good team a next great one by losing high draft picks or fear of the Sharks coming back and sniping one of their better players in future years or over confidant they can draft someone better. Personally I agree with you that teams should push the envelope more.

I’m clearly in the minority, but I think Jbot is close to done.  I do think some excess guys get moved/waived/traded off the team, but I don’t see any major acquisition at this point.

We are deep defensively and once McCabe is re-signed the pieces are all in place with a nice balance and speed and skill throughout the top 9.

    Dahlin Montour

    McCabe Ristolainen

    Scandella Miller

If Bogo comes back healthy he can switch in for Scandella and play with Miller.  For the 1st time in years, we’ll actually have a full compliment of NHL D.

As to the forwards, Jbot has added Vesey and Johansson, plus Olofsson is going to earn a roster spot.  That’s three additional top 9 forwards to go with Jack, Sam, Jeff, Mitts, Erod and Sheary.  That is a legit top 9 and the pieces fit together if Johansson plays center.  Please don’t assume that just because a guy doesn’t take faceoff’s he isn’t playing center.  Erod, who played both center and wing was 3rd in FO taken and Skinner was 6th. Also Sheary, Vesey and Olofsson can play their off wing.

    Lines

    Skinner Eichel Olofsson/Vesey

    Olofsson/Vesey/Johansson Johansson/Mitts/Erod Reinhart

    Sheary/Olofsson Mitts/Erod/Johansson ERod/Sheary

As you can see there are a million line combos because most of our forwards (Sheary, Johansson, Olofsson, Erod and Vesey) can play multiple positions.  The lineup will depend on chemistry.  With Samson now anchoring the 2nd line from his RW slot, we really need a center who can keep up and drive possession and that is Johansson.

    My preferred lineup is

    Skinner Eichel Olofsson

    Erod Johansson Reinhart

Vesey Mitts Sheary/KO - I don’t mind putting KO here to add a vet and some toughness.

I feel we still need another proven top 6 guy as ERod at best is a 3rd liner and asking Olofsson to be on the top line is asking a lot.

We all agree that without improved play from our 2nd line center, this team is going no where fast.  If Casey is pencilled in as the 2C, Jbot probably needs to strength the 3C just in case Casey proves not ready.

The question now is whether or not Jbot is satisfied with his internal candidates for the job to carry the load or is he actually searching for external help.

So far we haven’t seen any attempt to improve that position with an external candidate.  That doesn’t mean if won’t happen, after all Skinner was acquired August 2nd 2018, but after the recent flurry of trades and signings, most of the obvious (read good) candidates are gone such as Hayes, Duchene, Galchenyuk among others.

If he sticks with the internal candidates, I think the fan base is going to be pissed, but that maybe his plan.

    Internal Candidates

    1) Casey Mittelstadt - Casey “failed” this test last year and frankly it was unfair of Jbot to place him in that position.  Still he is very talented, has an NHL season under his belt, and if Jbot puts Reinhart on his line he may have a much better talent to play with then last year by a country mile.

    2) Arttu Routsalainen - Smallish center had a breakout year last year in Finland with 21 goals.  He’ll be 22 in late Oct and has 4 years of pro experience in Finland, but none in NA.  He needs to return to Finland if he doesn’t make the Sabres.  Camp will be huge for him.  How quickly will he adjust to NA hockey?

    3) Erod - He is a wonderful utility forward, but is really best as a middle six winger.  If he has to center a line I’d prefer he anchors the 3rd line

    4) Rasmus Asplund - It took TM’s guy half a season to adjust to NA, but had an excellent 2nd half.  Likely would be best served with another year in Rochester and Jbot is unlikely to rush him.

    5) Dylan Cozens - Thumb surgery probably increases the odds against him making the Sabres next year, but he is an excellent talent.  2020-21 is much more likely.

    6) Vladimir Sobotka - He stunk last year and somehow is still in the organization.  While I doubt he gets a shot at the 2C, I wouldn’t be surprised, but I be really unhappy, if he was in the pivot of the 3rd line.  Hopefully he finds himself in the press box come opening night.  This would mean that Jbot actually worked to fix the forward group.

7 & 8.) Larsson and Girgensons - Both have played center in the NHL. Both have prove they belong on the 4th line bringing energy, physical play and killing penalties.  Having either player in the top 9 is a step in the wrong direction.

    External Candidates

    1) Marcus Johansson - Utility forward is a UFA and has a history of concussions.  Listed primarily as a LW,  but has played center in the past.  Performance in Boston shows the skills are still there, but rumor mill says we wants 5 year deal at $5 mill per season.  Right now he has priced himself out of a job.

    2) Ryan Dzingel - 27 year old had a breakout season with 26 goals and 56 points.  Has improved in all three NHL seasons and plays LW and Center.  Turned down a 5 year extension from Ottawa mid season (5 yrs 20 mill), but so far hasn’t signed anywhere.  I think he’s our best option.

    3) Kyle Turris - Will be 30 in August and has 5 years at $6 mil per season left on his deal. Had a terrible season last year leading to speculation that his skill are fading.  Probably the cheapest trade acquisition.

    4) Nick Bjugstad - the rumor mill says Pitts wants to trade him to create cap space.  He’s 26 and has 2 43+ pt seasons in recent years, but had an off year last season.  $4.1 mill cap hit for the next 2 years.  Plays both C and RW which we need.  I wouldn’t mind seeing him acquired.

5 - 7) Tampa Bay centers - TB needs cap space, but after trading Miller away, they have guys who could help us, but all have NTC except Corelli, who I doubt they’’’ trade since he is still on his ELC.  Tyler Johnson (28 5 years at 5 mill left on his deal) and Yanni Gourde (27, 6 years left at 5.16) both fit our needs, but would they waive their NTC to come here.  Would you?

8.) Other UFAs - Derrick Brassard and Brian Boyle - older proven players better suited for 3C duties, but veteran presence couldn’t hurt.  One or both could be had for a 1yr deal.

You forgot Brayden Point. He's an RFA and I'd offer sheet him asap.

There were not many contracts handed out today that would have made sense for the Sabres. They need a 2C and they will probably have to get him in a trade.

Something good will shake loose from another team that overspent.

I just read an article that the Canadians were considering making an offer to Brayden Point instead of Aho. I wonder if Botts be wise to make him an offer while Aho is still in limbo?
