Went to the Ducks/Leafs game last night. The ice girls are now cleaning the ice from one end to the other instead of width wise in each zone so I no longer get to see my favorite ice girl go back and forth repeatedly right in front of me. Tragic.

We're still 6 weeks away from the trade deadline. IMO Dubnyk could've fetched more than a 3rd at the deadline.... maybe a 2nd. I, for one, don't want TM to just give guys away for the sake of sucking in Jan or Feb, when the last 6 weeks of the season are what really matter in the race for The Shart. The team finishing with the worst goal differential has finished dead last in the NHL 15 of the past 16 seasons.

They have an easier schedule in the West with multiple games against the likes of NAS, LA, ANA, CHI, VAN, SJ, STL, etc... Those games are guaranteed points in the CHL.

oh gawd... this is terrible news. ARI making a statement with that trade.

Next 10 (CHL games in bold) BUF: MIN, PHI, @DET, @CAL, @EDM, @VAN, @MTL, STL, DAL, NYI . I see perhaps 6-7 wins, giving us about 12-14 out of a possible 20 points. EDM: @TB, @FLA, @WAS, MIN, BUF, @CAL, @SJ, PIT, @TOR, @NJ. Only 2 home games, yikes! I see them winning maybe 8-9 of those games, 16-18 points. So BUF could lose some ground to EDM over the next couple of weeks, but things get really interesting in MAR where BUF only has 4 home games, and EDM has a 6 game homestand against some top CHL teams.

IMHO, OTT and DAL are no longer CHL members. DAL is almost 20 points out of first, OTT 17 points out at the half-way mark is not realistic they can make up all that ground in 40 games. COL and CBJ are in the same boat, they're too talented and their goaltending is back to normal. The real CHL contenders at this point are PHI, ARI, NJ, CAR, BUF, and EDM.

Analytics aside, the important stat to watch is team goal differential. The team finishing with the worst gf/ga differential has finished last 15 of the past 16 years. Buffalo at -71 is almost 30 goals worse than EDM (-44) and its only half way through the season.

EDM played a solid game. CHI coming off a difficult back to back, but the Oil played a desperate game and it paid off. They could be getting on a roll here... they're overdue. Next 3 for EDM: FLA,@STL,@TBL BUF: DET,MIN,PHI Some tough games for EDM.

You're doing God's work Taro! the new columns are very interesting and will help down the stretch. Neuvirth starting tomorrow on the second night of a back to back against the top team in the eastern conference? Noooiiiccceee

...and 6 of those 14 wins (losses) are shootout victories (losses)... tied with EDM for last (first?) in ROW (ROL?).

I'd go Marner over Crouse considering Buffalo's needs.

Next game against CAR is absolutley gimongous. EDM picking up the win by giving up the losing goal with 30s remaining in the third. CAR gives up 3 goals in the third to win another 1 goal game... Unreal that team in one goal games they're almost unbeatable. The Hockey Gods have not smiled on either of those teams yet this season. Hopefully they have better puck luck down the stretch when it really matters.

I wouldn't say they expect to be a playoff team, but they certainly don't expect to be in the basement. Their recent moves will certainly help... gone are some of the 1-way offenvise players (Perron, Arcobello, Draisaitl), replaced with some decent 2-way NHL veterans (Roy, Klinkhammer, Fraser). This will help cut back on their goals against, which was their biggest problem. It seems to be helping already. This gives them better matchups against opposing teams top lines and allows the Hall line to wheel and deal.

He was playing well, but the reason they've been losing is the goaltending has cooled off. During their winning streak, they we're still getting badly outshot, however Enroth was playing like a generational talent. So unless Myers is Enroths gateway to Dominik Haseks soul, then I expect their losing ways to continue.

Near term the Sabres may lose some ground to the Oil who play 4 of their next 5 against DET, CHI, STL, and TBL. However, the Feb/Mar schedule is highly favorable for BUF to move up the standings with only 4 home games in the month of March. Likewise, EDM has a 6 game homestand in March (7 total at home) against the likes of CBJ, PHI, COL, and DAL. I fully expect BUF to have their hands of stone firmly wrapped around The Shart trophy by April 1st.

Moves will need to be made. They have 9 picks this year and already have the league max number of contracts (50) in their system. 10 of those are due to be UFAs, 13 RFAs. Sure they'll let some walk, but at some point they'll need to turn picks/prospects into NHL caliber players. If they land McDavid or Eichel, I see them moving one of Grigorenko or Reinhart as part of a larger deal for an established top 6 scoring winger. If they pick Hanifin, then a d-man will be moved instead. The important thing is they have a ton of assests (prospects and picks), ~30mil in cap space for 15-16, and an open check book. It's a GMs dream job.

Analytics aside.... if you want to know who will finish last in the NHL, just look at team Goal Differential for past seasons. The team with the worst goal differential has finished last 15 out of the last 16 seasons. The only exception being 07-08 when ATL finished a league worst -56, yet had 5 more points than both TB (-44) and and LA (-35). Buffalo currently is worst at -59, a whopping 12 goals worse than Edmonton. If the Sabres keep up this pace (-1.475/gm), they'll finish -121. You would have to go all they way back to the 99-00 season to find a team with a worse goal diff (the expansion Atlanta Thrasher, -143). And if you want to exclude expansion years, you'd have to back to the 93-94 which saw Ottawa log a -196 in just their second season in the NHL. What really blows my mind is that ANA is only a +5 in goal diff, yet they sit atop the NHL with 58 points. How is that even possible?

Perron epitomized everything wrong with the Oilers. Lazy one-way player, a -17 this season was 3rd worst on the team, and only scored 5 goals. Replacing him with Derek Roy will be an improvement as Roy is a much more responsible 2-way player. Roy doesn't have the offensive flair that Perron had, but that's not what the Oilers need. Good maneuver by the Oil, don't see it as a tank move,

Oilers trade David Perron to Pitt for 2015 1st and Rob Klinkhammer.
