They're the "in the hunt" team at like 7-8 with 2 games left in the NFL.  They need to win both, and some stuff to happen to get there, but its not out of the realm of possibility.

I think winning 7 straight, and 9 straight overall is not going to happen.  Pittsburgh winning 5 straight is also very unlikely, especially for a sub .500 team on the road with 3 road games left.  Florida's streaky, and the islanders are really dependent on solid goaltending and getting ahead early.

A lot to happen but id say for buffalo to have any semblance of a chance, we need at least 5 wins and probably 11 points - with the Florida one being extra since we're chasing them.  Even with all that happening it'd still be very much a long shot.

With 3 of their last 7 against CAR, @NYR, @NJD with 2 back-to-backs I don't like their chances even with a win tomorrow.

Not a fan of the Miller comparisons. Levi is a totally different personality - at least right now. I seem to recall Miller from the get-go was moody and weird. Levi seems to be neither.

Miller wasn't nearly this good at 21.  He blossomed at 26 after a few years in Roch w occasional call ups.

Son of a *&&^! I wont be able to watch as it will most likely be blacked out on NHLN here in NJ. I can get it on ESPN+ but do not think i will get it. @%&!&^^%%$$@

I'm in California and have Hulu Live with ESPN+ add-on.   That said, I have no means to watch this game legally unless I sign up for Fubo or Sling, which AFAIK are the only streaming providers who carry NHLN.

I didn't realize, before checking just now, that Minny is ranked #1 in the country and is playing in the Frozen Four this week.  National Semis are Thursday night -- Minny plays BU and Michigan plays Quinnipiac -- and the championship game is Saturday night.

To clarify, the frozen four concludes next week, Thur 4/6 - Sat 4/8.

Buffalo's final game in April 14th.   Rochesters final regular season game is the 16th, so I'd image he might get a game or two in Buffalo then head to Roch for the playoffs.

  5. The goaltending has been utterly abysmal the past 6 years.

As fans we've been conditioned to accept average goaltending performances as exceptional.

Is today the day that changes?

If Levi can simply provide average NHL goaltending it will put this team in a wildcard spot next season.

Many are still making it ALL about the Goalie when the team hasn't played D in most every game this year.

Buffalo is giving up the 7th most shots agains/60min, and 4th mosts high danger chances against/60min.    I agree, they definitely need to play better team defense.

That said, on home ice (as of March 22) their goaltending has given up a league high 35 goals above expected, 135% worse than the 5th worst team... and 493% worse than the 10th worst team.

Here's a post from March with more home ice goaltending stats... basically they'd be a wildcard team if they simply had average goaltending performances at home.

It also requires a coaching staff that can teach defense, defensemen who can play defense and goaltenders who can stop a puck at least 90% of the time.  Based on the current team, we don’t have the goalies, enough D who can play D or possibly the right coaching staff.  These issues have now been evident for 2 plus seasons and have yet to be properly addressed by the GM.

I know the KA/STH meeting gave @Taro T and others hope that KA is serious about winning next season, I’m not sure that true.  Continually saying the time line is 3-5 years from now after 3 years of his tenure doesn’t bode well.

Goaltending is the most obvious issue, with depth on defense also a concern.    That said, I believe they have more to gain by committing to sound team defense rather than upgrading the depth on the blueline.

I do agree the coaching staff needs to implement a defensive system which the rostered players are capable of executing.     I believe Granato and his staff are knowledgeable enough they should have some effective defensive systems in their playbook.     It's not rocket science.

Is the coaching staff putting an emphasis on team defense during practice and team meetings?  Maybe?  Maybe not?

Does Donny hold players accountable for losing their defensive assignments?  Probably not?  He doesn't aggressively bench players, but I don't know what else goes on in the room.

Are the players holding each other accountable?   They all seem to like each other and get along, maybe a bit too much such that they're reluctant to point fingers.    Sometimes calling out a teammate (behind closed doors) is a good thing.

  8. It's difficult to teach young offensive minded players to play team defense.

It requires experience, discipline and trust.

If one player on the ice is caught out of position, the entire system breaks down.

They'll get better at it over time, but was disappointed not to see improvement in that area as the season progressed.

At some point Granato and his staff need to make it a priority.

  9. Do you mortgage the future just to make the playoffs next year, or continue the draft, develop and retain approach building a sustainable pipeline of prospects?

I'm not sure making the neccessary moves to make the playoffe next year and building a sustainable pipeline are mutually exclusive.
