  1. Comrie played great.    .927 sv%, allowing almost 2 goals fewer than expected.

That's a massive goaltending improvement on home ice, one of the top 3 performances of the season.

Unfortunately they gave up way too many high danger chances, 21... the second most they've allowed on home ice all season.

In their 14 home wins, they're averaging 11 high danger chances against per game.

It's frustrating.  They finally get a quality goaltending performance and let it go to waste with careless defense.

Just for the record since we tend to get caught up in how well Kulich is doing for a 18-year-old.

He’s 8th among goals for rookies and 17th for points.

Overall, he’s 41st in goals and 95th in points.

He’s a top 6 AHL player, but he’s not a dominant one. And he’s clearly at least a step behind where Peterka was a year ago and 2 below Quinn.

I don’t think anyone should be pencilling him into the NHL roster in October.

This is true, however he did have a slow start to the season.

Over his last 26 games he has 14g 9a for 23 points... 0.88 pt/g, which would put him 1st amongst rookies and 30th overall in pt/g for players who've played 50 games or more.   That's exceptional for an 18 y/o.

You can blame that squarely on the Russian government instead of deflecting responsibility to the Sabres.

Correct.   I blame Russia for their ***** policies.

That said, it's an opportunity for the league/Sabres.   Give the Russian players the option to wear a normal jersey or wear a jersey promoting peace for Russia or some other noble cause that won't put their families at risk or oppose their religious beliefs.. no matter how archaic those beliefs may be.

Why is there a need for sports teams to be involved with peoples sexual preferences? Keep politics out of the sport!!! Just play hockey!

Traditionally hockey has been one of the more macho sports because of violence and fighting being part of the game.

I played growing up in the 80s and the 3 letter F word was thrown around between every whistle every game like it was nothing.

Today there is zero tolerance for it which should've been policy years ago.

IMO pride night is a way for the league to acknowledge past transgressions, and to get the message out to young boys and girls that the sport is open to everyone.

You know what line is much thinner? It’s the line between intolerance/exclusivity and condemning that lifestyle. Especially when we see this condemnation come in the form of actually being codified into law as we are currently seeing in some states.

I cannot agree more with your last sentence. Like Gandhi advised, let’s be the change we wanna see.

    Agreed.

If and when players wear pride, cancer, military, etc themed jerseys should be up to each player.   Maybe a group of players design a jersey to promote Alzheimer's awareness because a friend or family member is suffering.

Its much more meaningful that way vs the team or league forcing it on them.

Please let us all remember this thread when the Sabres are picking 15th in June and the thread blows up because the Sabres are morons for not picking 'their guy'.

I think the difference is now we have some level of trust those in charge will select the right player.   We've been conditioned to scrutinize picks due to previous regime's incompetence.

  7. Military appreciation should include not only a living hero but also someone who gave their life.

Pride night is fine, but there's a fine line between demonstrating tolerance/inclusivity and actually promoting that lifestyle.

IMO each individual player should be allowed to choose what they want to wear for warmups each game... instead of having these forced theme based events.

If we're going to promote tolerance, then lets be an example of that as well.

  8. Going into this game, the Sabres are 5-12-1 at Home in 2023.

Giving up an average of 4.72 goals per game, with an .848 SV%, having allowed a total of 28 goals above expected (1.55 per game).

For the entire season at home, they have a total of 13 out of 37 (35%) games with a save percentage of .900 or greater.

They are 7-5-1 in those games.

Kulich in 2024-25 (with a 4-game cup of coffee next season). Savoie with 8 games early centering Girgs and/or Okposo or equivalent (the Krebs treatment) before heading back to juniors or WJC or even Europe to keep bulking when he's deemed not quite ready.

We've seen this season what having too many rookies at once looks like. I've always believed you can safely manage 1 rookie at each position at a time. Any more and you start getting wonky (even if they're great, they'll be inconsistent, get knocked off pucks and off their skates too easily, and be prone to lapses/rookie walls).

The Red Wings were the model for years because when it was time to fill a hole in their roster, they had a 23 year-old in Grand Rapids (or overseas in the case of Datsyuk) ready to go -- not a kid. Even just a regular guy like Jiri Hudler had 12 games at age 20, 4 games at age 22, and then was ready to go at age 23.
The Sabres need to let the kids stew and become dominant AHL vets on their ELCs. The best thing about this phase of the Sabres rebuild is there aren't endless NHL spots to rush them up to fill; yes, the Sabres are thin in depth, but they do have legit NHL talent (except at the 6-7 D spot and that's only glaring because the top 4 are all still kids). Starting this season, all the "blocks" for the kids are other talented kids.

They have to earn it, but next season I'd roll Sabres rookies, part-time Savoie (12F) or Rousek (12/13F) and Johnson (6D). And at goalie it's either UPL (still under 40 career NHL starts) or Levi, but not both.

And I'm still shocked Kulich fell as much as he did. I had him as my top forward when the Sabres picked Östlund.

I would agree, but the league is changing.    It's less physical, kids don't need to weigh 190-200lbs and learn how to muck and grind in the corners.    It's more a skills contest than anything.    If Kulich is racking up points in Roch he'll have every opportunity to make the Sabres next season without hesitation.

His post game press conference has given me a lot of cause for concern. Basically saying the players are gripping their sticks and trying too hard, afraid to make mistakes.  He says they aren’t handling pressure well.

What if they never get past that?  🫤

Ha, it's coach speak for "Our goalie sucked so we lost".
