To be clear I injected Karmanos’ name. Pagnotta mentioned no potential successor. My thought process is/was Karmanos is highly thought of and he’d be gone if not bumped up.

Last week on XM Dave Pagnotta passed along a rumor that KA would take an operational position with Sabres and replaced as GM if the wheels fell off early this season. Only way that makes sense is if he wanted to play it back with our core and Karmanos voted for trades. I think KA makes it through the year regardless.

I see us middle of the pack in the bottom 8 of the east. To make playoffs need 60+ goals from the Cozens line and more physical play from the top 6 - a faster Greenway type in top 6. Goal tending will have to “steal” some games for us.

Bad Sabres are better than no Sabres so I’ll watch every game. When they play bad the humor on this site atones for the on ice product. In four more years we should be a consistent playoff contender. I’ll be 75 and may finally get my granddaughter to watch with me.

Cassidy turned Eichel into a solid two way center which he wasn’t in Buffalo. No doubt being surrounded with solid vets and associated peer pressure had an impact also. Since KA ran it back with essentially the same top six how about bringing in a coach dedicated to working with Tage and Cozens? Get Tage to improve D and play making, and let the goals come to him. Teach him to use his frame rather than stick checking. Work on Dylan’s positional play and we’d get a lot stronger up the middle.

He’s got an $11M cap hit that would require us taking back an equally big contract. I think any blockbuster trade Sabres could make would require a package of our overpaid contract(s) along with guys like Thompson, JJ, Benson, Greenway. Sabres at this moment are the poster child for not building through the draft. Panthers and Vegas are the opposite spectrum. I forget what GM I was listening to last week but he emphasized a strong veteran core that you bring youth into - not the opposite.

These contracts are why I’m fine (this year) of KA not spending to the cap. If we fail this year I’ve got to believe we’ll have a POHO to evaluate everyone.

I expect Columbus to come out banging and see if we’ll hold up. That could work to our favor as a wake up call.
