  1. I find it interesting that some (not directed at you @dudacek) diminish Casey’s accomplishments, pointing to time spent with Tuch and Skinner on his wings as the reason for his output. Is it just his longer than expected development curve that has soured folks on Casey? We should be pleased to have a player who can step into the 1C role and keep that line cruising along (from memory and eye test). Other than Cozens I can’t see anyone else on the roster able to do that.

    Players listed 1-168.

    6.  Cozens - Bubble Elite

    13. Power - NHL All-star

    27. Quinn - Top of the lineup player

    64. Benson - Bubble top of the lineup player - middle of the lineup

    70. JJP - Bubble top of the lineup player - middle of the lineup

    80. Kulich - Bubble top of the lineup player - middle of the lineup

    91. Östlund - Middle of the lineup player

    100. Savoie - Middle of the lineup player

    126. Krebs - Middle of the lineup player

    138. Wahlberg - Middle of the lineup player

    139. Strbak - Middle of the lineup player

    165. Levi - Middle of the lineup player

This is going to be interesting/fun to watch. Assuming the Sabres top line stays intact for a few more years, there are 9 forward prospects for (counting on my fingers) 6 'middle of the lineup' positions. (5 if we assume Casey is in the middle 6). Of the 9 he rates 6 of them between elite and bubble top of the line up players. The middle six may look more like 2 second lines very soon.

  3. All of the things we're speculating/worrying about now could have happened prior to and without the dissolution of PSE. In the absence of those other business interests there is simply no need for a PSE to exist if it's down to only two teams (businesses). Could be a matter of overhead elimination. Could be a tax advantage (as @PerreaultForeverpointed out.

This is a big nothing burger IMPO.

Basically the Fediverse is something that if you code a platform correctly, anyone can tap into it.  Mastodon is the open source software that does that.  So anyone can set up Mastodon on their server and tap into the Fediverse, which is basically like a decentralized Twitter.  Each server is moderated by the server owner.  They moderate other servers that don't follow common sense rules of decorum by "defederating" from the offending servers (basically, blocking the whole server and all their users).  So instead of a single megalomaniac controlling the platform it's controlled by all the individual server owners.

Threads is a Meta offshoot (Meta owns Facebook and Instagram).  It was developed by Instagram and intended to be similar but more text-based.  It's intended to be a Twitter competitor.  I don't think it's hooked up to the Fediverse yet but there are reports that that is the intent for Threads.  If/when Threads joins the Fediverse it could become a viable alternative and fierce competitor to Twitter.

I have an account on a Mastodon server; I signed up last autumn when there were reports of Twitter's imminent demise (which never happened).  So far it's nothing like Twitter in that there are very few official corporate or professional accounts there, but there are a lot of people there.  I could see Threads injecting that corporate/professional focus that would make me and a lot of other people feel like we can cut the Twitter cord once and for all.

Oh, and I understand about thermo.  I did just well enough to never have to take it again (and even then I think the professor was just being nice).

Thanks for the explanation @Doohickie. And FTR, you did better than I in Thermo. I 'enjoyed' the class so much I took it a second time. 🙄

I'm over on Mastodon.  Really not much in the way of "official" accounts there.  Threads was promising because it was supposed to be on the Fediverse which is basically the Mastodon open source backbone.

OK, I'll admit it. I have no idea what any of this is. Clueless. Gives me flashbacks to sitting in Thermodynamics class in college. 😄

I think the nicest tribute that could be paid to Rick on opening night is to simply have his family and friends come out and Cupcake can drop the puck. No more blaring NOW DO YOU BELIEVEs. We've done it enough. He was more than that. The patch is a nice idea. Maybe something on the ice. I also like the idea of a moment of noise. Certainly not silence!

What a great idea @PASabreFan  . Particularly because of RJ’s reference  to his ‘Beautiful Noise’ at the RJ Night celebration ceremony. He would have certainly been on board with that.

Disqualifyingly so. Also, I couldn't really get past him saying he's never had pizza from Buffalo and that his information was based on internet research.

    Agreed.

I had sex with Scarlett Johansson once. Well, not really. But I found her picture on the internet once and ....

Kinda saying the the same thing, innit?  😆

Lots of accurate Buffalo pizza knowledge in this post. I'll echo the Bob and John's take. They used to be definitive North Buffalo pizza. Nowadays, I find them hit and miss. And shoutout for sure to the old Mr. Pizza at Elmwood and Bird. Fantastic. I didn't know that Just Pizza grew from the Mr. Pizza stores. Just Pizza was reliably very good when they started, but, there again and like you, I find them hit and miss now.

I should have been more specific about my LaHacienda comment as its such a generic name. I was referring to the one on Pine Ave. in the Falls. Not even sure its still open. That whole section of town has hit the skids.

All I know is my son in law used to go to the Otters games, he wanted to play for the Sabres bad, and that was long before he was drafted. He loved Ellicotville I was told anyways. But who knows now that he's matured some.

I still see the Sabres as #1 on his list. I mean, honestly, think about the situation he'd be walking in to at the end of 3 seasons from now. A team stacked with skilled wingers, skilled down the line up in centers, with high end blueline talent, all coming in to their beginning core prime years. And he loved it in the area to boot.

I believe if he doesn't re-sign in Edmonton, Buffalo it is.

KA just has to be careful not to block his pathway to Buffalo by having a more seasoned veteran on the roster.

I guess it’s nice to see the team has progressed to the point where actual NHL players have moved to the top of our punt list instead of guys like Bjork and Meszaros.

Hell, I can remember when I started visiting this board there were discussions about Girgs being on the LW with young Eichel. Now some are PO’d he was signed for a 4th line role. As you say, nice to see. VERY nice.

Personally, expect UPL is FINALLY starting to get comfortable with the surgically altered hips.  He hasn't been as bad at crossbar shots and even 5 hole this last season as he'd been in the recent past.  (But, yes, his glove hand is definitely below average.)  So some of those issues you've mentioned COULD get cleared up, but it definitely isn't a given they will.

And also believe that all those other issues besides the glove are products of UPL being poor at anticipating plays.  It's something that he CAN and should be able to get better at with experience, but it remains to be seen whether he can get good enough at that to allow his size to be an advantage and not a disadvantage (necessarily slower reaction time than a smaller goalie would have when they both twig onto what's going to happen at the same time; but if he's anticipated the play and is set there really are very little areas of the net that a shooter can try for).

Your point about Levi coming out high is important as the Sabres need to watch the backdoor and also the below the goalline to the slot pass MUCH better than they currently do because those both will tend to be a prime way to beat Levi (backdoor, because he'll either be forced to make a highlight reel save or will be beat badly; below the line to the slot because there will be a lof of room to the far side before Levi can get out to take the angle back down).  Let the kid take the shot and worry about taking away the passing lanes forcing him to move.  Even just creating a slight momentary delay in that pass will typically be enough to allow Levi's athleticism to make the acrobatic save we saw (your Rags example being a prime example) several times over just 7 games.

Great points @Taro T. I was bored one night last week and watched the extended highlights of the Detroit game, curious about the 6 goals Levi gave up. What you describe was how a couple of the goals played out.

Separately, that game represents the flip side of the small sample size argument re: Levi. Four of the goals he had no chance on. A PP goal where a Wing was left unattended at the back post. A redirect on the PP. The ‘doink goal’ that went off Power’s hip. Then Boosh’s perfect outlet pass to a Wing streaking into the slot then making a pass to an unattended (again) Wing at the post for a tap in. My point being those 4 goals in his 7 games inflates his GA average by over 0.5 per game.

Niagara Falls pizza back in the day was totally different from Buffalo pizza. Niagara had a thinner crust (albeit cup and char), more sauce, less cheese and it was spicier than Buffalo pizza, I'm aging myself but Hacienda on Pine, St. Angelo's on the Island where typical of that pizza and boy it was good...

Great call on LaHacienda. When I was growing up it’s pizza was the best around and it wasn’t particularly close.

Tried Gangster's back in the Sammy's days and liked it... Just not as much as Sammy's. It might be time for another visit.

Never tried Buzzy's though. That might be the next place to go.

Sammy’s was great back when I was in high school and college (not telling how many decades ago that was😀). They’ve ***** the bed long since.

Coming from Canada, we like to hit the pizza joints of Niagara Falls, NY (as it's closer than Buffalo proper). Most are hole in the wall type places that all serve good pizza and wings (esp compared to Canada). It seems everyone has their favourite.

I may have mentioned before that WAY back in the day, nothing could touch Sammy's on Hyde Park Blvd. Then maybe 15 years ago the quality went down.

Last weekend we tried Joey's in the LaSalle neighborhood. It was good enough to go back... But still no old school Sammy's.

Any others hit the NF pizza joints?

Any new faces on the scene in the Buffalo area?

@JoeSchmoe In the Falls give Buzzy’s a try. It’s shortly after Pine avenue turns into NF Boulevard. Also try Gagsters in the Market area on Pine Avenue.
One caveat though. Both used to ALWAYS be really good but on a couple visits in recent years each has ‘laid an egg’ one time. That never used to happen.

It’s more likely that 75% won’t make but it’s fun to see the level of talent that Adams and his henchman have compiled.  Maybe 6 of these guys make in the NHL someday.

I saw young fans up against the glass calling for Bensons attention after the games.  I see hockey coming back to life in Buffalo.

Whether its 75% that won't make it or the 50% that @LGR4GMsuggests, that number can now be applied to 15 or so legitimate prospects vs. maybe a half dozen in years past. That's what is particularly encouraging for the future.
