Just because he earns $5.4 million AAV doesn't mean he has to play on the top pair. Hell, Bogosian earns $5 million a year to be hurt half the year. Why does he get to stay? He's never on the top pair even when he is healthy.

I hope Montour works well with Dahlin on the top pair and I hope Ristolainen gets a chance to succeed in an easier role. If Botterill trades him for more magic beans I hope they can him before he can screw up the team further.

As soon as I wrote this, I knew I opened up to criticism.   Agreed.   The fact we have a 3 line D in Bogo and 4th line forward in KO earning $6M AAV is one of many reasons why we  are not in great cap shape.  However there is a light at the end of the tunnel (at least with Hunwick, Bogo, Vlad and Scandella).    I have no reason to expect a Ryan O'Reillyesque return, but I think Risto brings back something something useful to the top six.   And like Liger said, Montour slots in as Second line Right pair, so I expect another move to find a dance partner for Dahlin.

He's not expendable until you have someone better to replace him. If you don't have a good first line center, you don't just get rid of the guy you have playing first line center because he's struggling. You try to find an upgrade so you can bump that guy down to the second line.

Disagree.  Not a good complimentary fit with the other Rasmus, and to be clear our Defense begins and ends with Dahlin.   As stated, Montour is a RD, and therefore not a need there.  We cannot pay $5.4m AAV to a third line D, especially when guys like Nelson or Bogo can fill that hole.   These facts coupled with the expected return lead me to believe he is expendable.  His cap figure will be replaced by a top six forward we desperately need.  Yes the compliment to Dahlin is missing but I expect that in a trade or Free agency.

  3. 2 hours ago, LGR4GM said:

Why? I know risto isn't capable of handling those minutes. So that puts him as your 2nd pairing RHD except that is where Montour slots. SO now he is your 3rd pairing RHD who gets pp2 time.

If he was playing his 24minutes of tough hockey well, sure I would agree but he plays it poorly so he isn't filling the role. That bumps him to 2nd pairing. Okay, so who is better Risto or Montour? I personally would guess Montour.

If Montour can't be the 2nd line RHD than I don't want him anyways.

Well stated.  He’s expendable b/c of those reasons.

Sure there is. This entire debate started because I disagreed with the idea that the Leafs would have to pay big to rid themselves of Marleau and Zaitsev. I said I would trade a 4th for Marleau based on the premise that we had failed to acquire a better option, and that we had plenty of cap room. Not every team that would like a Vanek will be able to sign one and there aren’t many out there. Never mind the fact that Marleau fits Sabres needs better than Vanek right now.

What 35-point scorer are you trading a 4th round pick for who has a significantly better contract than Marleau?

I mean it could happen, but you’re acting like it’s easy.

I agree with your position that the Leafs will not have to pay that much to move Marleau but that is separate from a reason why we should do it.   The cap space would be better served taking on Callahan and getting something valuable in return.   Marleau is the iron horse of hockey but Father Time is catching up.  Thirty six might be a ceiling.   I like the Vanek idea if $2.5 and one year.

Well, it's more like $11.4M since you can only bury a hair under $1M of a salary in the AHL. Anyway, there's no way that we're finding a taker for both Risto and Scandella without taking back money

5.4 + 4 + 2 + 910k = $12.31M. Six of one.....  I think we under estimate what Ristolainen can return.  If the cost is to throw back a prospect along with Ristolainen but Scandella must be included, then I’m all in.  I want him off roster more than any other player not name Vlad.

There is no world in which we should have to take on Callahan to get Miller unless the only thing we're sending their way is a 7th round pick. I want Miller, and in many ways I think he's an ideal acquisition...but acquiring Callahan basically prevents us from adding another top-6 player this season.

If you can bundle Scandella in a deal with Rasmus, buyout Vlad and bury Hunwick you just found $12.4 million.  I think the Callahan/Miller trade is going to happen.  But I still have confidence another top 6 is coming.  Zucker or someone who hasn’t been rumored.   I also think a mid level UFA defenseman is added if Rasmus is traded.

  7. Not sure if it deserves its own thread or not but lots of talk the last 24 hours on Zucker and the Sabres.

What is the return he would demand?  Also, as another LW, presumably playing second line minutes does Olafsson slide to third line and Sheary to the 4th?  Is it possible Scandella could be sent back as part of this package?

We have 20million in cap space with Larsson, Erod, Zemgus, Ullmark, and McCabe the only players to sign. Buying him out makes 0 sense. We don't need the space so why tie yourself to him for another year. Burying him saves almost as much against the cap.

If a Callahan cap trade happens the extra $2m will benefit the team far better than $900 savings you get to bury.  And a $1m hit next year will be insignificant with so many others coming off.  And to GA’s point the real savings is $1,000,000. If the Sabres utilize the space great, if not save 12% of Ops Expense from the P&L.  Hunwicks saving is only $580k and another $1m in space this year.  I could see him being moved in a deal where we overpay a bit or buried.

Possibly, but he won’t do a Berglund.  He’ll take his money especially if he get back to Europe on a loan instead.

I’ve argued that Vlad will be a buyout for three months now with more knowledgeable that I arguing for a waive/bury option.  We will see on June 15th.   Cap Space this year is more important than next with Bogo et al coming off books.   I’ll maintain the Buyout route is  best and what’s JB actually does.

And if they are going to move Reinhart because he doesn't fit in with their system (or some other weird reason), I salivate at the return a 65 point, 24 year old former 2nd overall pick would get, if he was locked up for 6 more years at 5.5 million dollars.

What is... a  'B level' prospect, a late first rounder, a second round pick in 2029, and two salary dumps Alex?

Interesting that you chose the last 9 years. You know this is all cyclical and a large amount of luck after the first two rounds. One or two players hit and you catapult up the charts.

I will look closer when I get home but I think I can make your charts tell my story. It’s interesting what you can do with numbers,

you can go back 5 more years and you will find Foligno, Byron, Gerbe, Kaleta and Butler.   Zero home runs but much better than the last 9 which is non-existent.   I selected 9 b/c it covers JB's two draft whihc are Incomplete, three for TM and Darcy's last 4 which were part and parcel why he was fired.

This new notion that every other team finds superstars in rounds 2-7 is laughable.

First, the numbers show the Sabre’s do quite well in that regard.

Secondly, they have a couple of guys already on or breaking into the roster and as LGRM has pointed out a few times, more on the horizon.

You will all be surprised how much better third and fourth liners look when you actually have two top lines and quality defenseman.

Actually the data shows they do NOT do well in that regard.   These two summaries are of Sabres Draft selections in the last 9 years.   Overall (my data includes round #1) the Sabres draft more frequently, with a much higher average selection in each round (average #), and yet they are middle of the pack in Games played and points.

If you look only at rounds 4-7 Buffalo is league worst in points and second worst in Games played (Ulmark affecting this positively - otherwise they would be 30th).

I'm not going to comment on the performance of JB's sections thus far.  The early reports look promising.  But this definitely suggests that Darcy's last few drafts and TM's three are less than desirable.

How would Risto do as a RW?

I’d be open to Tage moving to Defense before moving Ristolainen to the wing.  A few reasons.  First it was successful with Burns.  Two, Tage can learn in Rochester for a year or two while he builds strength.  No risk.  Ristolainen requires an immediate transition and learning on the job with the big club while burdening our cap would only hurt us.  Lastly, don’t we already have a RW burning $6m in salary while playing 4th line minutes.

Even today it looks like there are a lot of takes and opinions on this trade.  I still don't hate this trade and here's why:

    1. The 2017-2018 Sabres roster was comprised of only 2.5 top 6 forwards - O'Reilly, Eichel, and Kane (who I believe has proven himself as a solid middle 6 during his tenures in Buffalo and SJ, but shouldn't be considered a top line threat anymore).  The rest was 3rd/4th line role players, guys running out contracts, and rookies trying to break into the league.  Jacob Josefson played 39 games and had 4 points.  Nick Baptiste, Scott Wilson, Jordon Nolan, Benoit Pouliot, Zemgus, and Larson didn't fair much better with a similar number of games (or more).  Pommers, Okposo, and Reinhart were pedestrian at best.  Want to throw up in your mouth a little bit?  Matt Moulson and Seth Griffith played 14 and 21 games that season, respectively.  Check out the roster and stats, it's disgusting… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017%E2%80%9318_Buffalo_Sabres_season#Player_statistics  .We needed 3-4 top 6 forwards and didn't have the assets to get them.  The O'Reilly trade brought us 3 roster players at a similar cap hit.   Yes this cost us 1 of our 2 top 6 forwards, but who else had any trade value on that team besides Eichel?  Kane was the only one and we got a fair return there.   My main point here is this trade plugged some upcoming holes for the 2019 season while overall freeing up cap space to go make a splash in FA or with a trade (see Skinner trade)

    2. The Berglund Breakdown - this was a monkey wrench thrown into Jbots plan only the Blues GM could have likely foreseen.  Berglund was not happy about being traded, was not happy about his role with the Sabres, and was not happy with being a hockey player anymore.  It appeared Jbots strategy was to pencil Berglund into the 2C role and let Middlestat develop.  If Middlestat appeared ready to handle a bigger load he could step in and provide the offensive 2C role, while Housley would be able to rely on Bergs for the defensive 2C role and a veteran presence.  Decent plan considering what they had to work with.  Unfortunately this plan burst into flames and drove straight into a ditch.  A happy Berglund would have helped this team, and his departure left a significant void - one I felt Zemgus should have stepped into.

    3. O'Reilly wanted out and didn't care about this team.   Let's face it - Ryan is a crybaby when things aren’t going well.  He cried about his contract in Colorado and forced his way out of there, he cried about the team he captained in Buffalo and forced his way out of there, and he's going to cry if/when St Louis starts to get bad.  Yes he says all the right things and is an amazing hockey player, but the guy has the constitution of 10 ply toilet paper.  Yes I am aware this is subjective, but the first 2 things actually happened so I don't think I'm going too far out on a limb here.

    4. The trade worked.  Blah blah blah their record was worse, blah blah blah they only had one forward line that could score blah blah blah there coach was in over his head blah blah blah.  This is not GM mode in EA sports.  You went from a team with 2 top 6 forwards to 3.  You had a team that was actually enjoyable to watch for the first 50 games, even when they lost.  And you ended the season with a number of assets you can still use along with some cap anchors coming off the books.  Yes JBot has RFA and FA contracts to get signed, but so does almost every other GM in the league.

    5.  What does JBot have to do this off season?  Add scoring.  He can do this by signing Skinner.  I'd like to see him make an RFQ offer sheet for Marner, and if that fails go after Panarin.  Having two scoring wingers we could play with Sam and Jack will be lethal, and let's see who comes to camp ready to be a top 6er out of the Tage, Casey, Nylander group.  My guess is that Casey is coming to camp next year physically ready for the 2C role.  I'd love our top six to look like:
              a. Skinner - Jack - Sam
              b. Sheary/Okposo - Casey - Panarin/Marner

This would give us 4 top 6 forwards, playing with a high potential prospect and a vet next year.

Sorry for the long post, but I really enjoy thinking about the short-term/long-term strategies when it comes to building a team, evaluating talent, and managing salaries; and I've been stuck on this line of thinking for a while when it comes to the O'Reilly trade.  I'm curious to hear other people's opinion on it considering the points I've made.  Let me know what you think!

1.) Mostly agree.  Our weakness was in bottom six.  However as I alluded to in an earlier post, the reason why my position changed was due to the fact that the return of Vlad, Tage and Berglund were all below average.  In theory it should have helped.  But it didn't.  The Berglund circumstances were unique, but still hurt team overall.   If you factor in the the 1st round pick drops to 31st overall, it only strengthens the case against the trade.

2.) Yes, Berglund's absence hurt Casey's development.  But JB/PH lose points for continuing to play him in that role.   He should have been in Roch by January.  Or playing 4th line with the Sabres acquiring a veteran Center.

3.)  It is subjective, but I too agree.  Perhaps only b/c I want to believe it.

4.) Their record was actually better this year than last.  It only seemed worse b/c the last 4 months of the season.   I cannot say the fact it was slightly better  was due to the trade.   I also would not suggest it was addition by subtraction.  The numbers suggest the pieces that came from STL hurt the team and were below replacement level.  The uplift was due to Dahlin, Skinner, and a nice step by Sam.   I agree with your argument about anchor's.  Anchors away my friend.  So no reason not to make better use of that money this season.

5.) If Sheary, Okposo, Casey, Tage or Nylander are playing 2nd line minutes next season, we are doomed.   The only player on the roster that I could see in a top 6 role is Olofsson, if he is protected by a strong center (Hayes?) and Sam on the right side.  And that  means another UFA/Trade assumes the first line RW role.   I don't believe anyone offer sheets Marner.    Panarin wants $11M+.  You might get a Hayes & Skinner in a best case scenario, but you certainly cannot afford  Panarin & Skinner.   That's over $30M on your top line.  And it will not be long before Rasmus will need something to 'wet his beak'.

  15.    I’ve changed my position on this trade.  I defended it earlier this year, but it’s definitely one sided.  ROR was one of many things that came together for this team.  Goaltending and a new coach didn’t hurt.  I only hope this ‘swing and miss’ does not affect JB in his aggressiveness this summer.  He needs to use that aggression on a team that is Salary Cap challenged.

I wish our pick was better but I would no sooner cheer for a Boston team than drink my own urine.   I despise their organization and all other sports team of that city.  Best of luck ROR. FU Boston.

Let's hope it only takes 1 more season for him to be a true 2C.  Will probably take 2 more to get there.

But would be shocked if he doesn't get there eventually.  Kid can stickhandle through a phone booth even though he doesn't currently have man strength.  When he's not a kid anymore will be as much a piece of the core as Eichel, Dahlin, & Reinhart.  (Hopefully Montour earns the label of "core" this season as well.)

If he projects to be a  Bo Horvat would you be OK with that?  2013 Draft, #9 overall?  Goes back to Junior draft year, followed by - 25 pts, 40 pts, 52 pts, 44 pts and 61 pts this year at age 24.   There are your Monahan's, Ehler's, Tkachuk, Rantanaan's and Meier's, that show big gains between year 2 and 3 of their draft.  Then there are those that stagnate and show no growth like Bennett, Virtanen, Zacha and Jost.   I think CM's trend line will be slower and steady like Horvat.   So I'll predict 42 in a 3C role next year.  Although I'd be happy with something more explosive.

You think they sign Vanek?  I'm all for bringing in a few vets, but he's at best a 20 goal scorer.

Reading more about Krueger, I like is outlook and approach.  I just hope in translates to team success.

Before this announcement it was extremely low (<2%).  Apparently Vanek speaks highly of RK, so if you believe that we want a big shake up (which I do), and this team is going to move on from Girgs, Larson, Pommers, Vlad.  Then factor in Skinner signing is in question, and Tage clearly not qualified, it increases the odds to maybe 20%.    What was Vanek's cap hit last year?  $3M.  Safely assume it decreases to maybe $2.5M this year?  Not a bad bridge. Low risk, high reward.   And unlike the other UFA's (Hayes, Duchene, Simmons, Ferland, Zuccarello, etc) it would not require a long term contract.  I think it's entirely plausible they have 6 new forwards next season.  I pencil (not pen) in Olafsson and Nylander for two.  I assume that a second line Center is coming back for Risto.  I also assume one more UFA, maybe two if Skinner does not sign.   Still leaves at least one forward spot open.

Completely agree.  I never interview anyone that is not “in consideration” for a position. Maybe you give a look to someone who on paper might not measure up to others but you want to see and hear them.   Otherwise it’s a waste of time.  Botterill taking time to interview a candidate that clearly would be a step back is a curious and concerning decision.   And I was a huge fan of his in the day.  Next to Scotty my favorite.  But no.

He has no reason to be desperate and jump at the first job available. He’s not going to Buffalo. I’m shocked people are still mentioning him.

I'm more in line with school of thought that Keefe is the heir apparent in Toronto.   But it would be interesting to see him take a meeting.   To force the hand of Dubas if you will.   There are also rumors that he is in no hurry and would wait for the right position....and Buffalo does not meet that criteria.    And if that's the case,  he can pi$$ off.
