Ladd isn't elite. Or good. He's probably at a 3rd liner level.

I don't think I said he was.  In fact I only suggested that Eberle might push down someone from FL1 to FL2.  Ladd might in fact be a third liner.  And if so it only strengthens my original point regarding that the middle 6 comparison.  B/c Ladd at .5 PPG would be superior to any FL2 or FL3 the Sabres have at this point.   Who would you rather start on FL3?  Ladd/Filppula/Sang or Tage/Vlad/Pommers.   Just saying its not "minor league".

I don't see how the islanders can beat us out for the wildcard. Their roster looks minor league

Maybe from the bottom six.  But keep this in mind.  They are missing Eberle and Ladd from the line up posted here.   Below is a comparison of lines using today's Daily face off.  It completes the narrative so many have been complaining about.  The Sabres line # 2 and 3 cannot compare to that of the Islanders (or most teams), and the Sabres Line #1 is usually dominates their opponents.    We could argue that Eberle might bolster the first lines point, but it would also push one of the other starters down and improve their second line's even more so.  Its obvious that having those elite players are vital to the success of the team, but depth cannot be underscored, so to speak.

If my trade were to occur, one thing I’d be gunning for is signing Skinner at 8.5 or less for 6/7 years and later signing Mark Stone for 8.5 mil for 7 years.

    Skinner - Eichel - Reinhart

    Sheary - Mitts - Stone

    Wilson - Spooner - Thompson

    Girgs - Larsson - Erod

    Dahlin - Bogo

    McCabe - Risto

    Scandella/Sekera - Pilut/Nelson

Why pay $8.5m to a second line RW when you have him paired with Kevin McAllister aka The Child Center?  The lack of production from Pommers, Sheary, KO and Tage is that they don’t have good Centermen like Jack to dominate and control the play.   Adding Mark Stone will provide instant secondary scoring.   Spend 5-6M on an adult 2C and the production will follow.

Well I am back form the game.

The Blues games are loud.  Very loud.  Their fans are loyal and they know the game.  They have a set of cheers they follow they get the place going … and the Blues sent them home happy.  Blues games remind me of the Sabres games in the Aud.  The HSBC/First Niagara place is a morgue in comparison.  Large, dark and cavernous.  I saw a bunch of Sabres fans tonight, all dejected as usual but all very hopeful for the promise that could be ahead.

I talked hockey with several Blues fans.  They fear Eichel and are impressed by him.  They like what is happening to Buffalo hockey finally, especially with us un another conference.   Several wondered why we were so bad with Kane, Eichel and ROR.  I told them our goaltending and defense were minor league level last year.

On to the game.  I am very down.  My record for Sabres games in St Louis is essentially 0-16, attending games on and off since 1988.  I saw a few ties, last year was a shootout loss, but never have I seen a Sabres win in St. Louis.

You guys saw it.  Other than the first line we have no mojo.  I thought Hutton blew the first goal.   Defensive lapses lead to the others.  Our Power play got a goal but really looked bad on the first attempt.  Eichel's line provided all off the offense.

Seeing Mitts and Tage up close, I was in the 17th row, it was obvious they are very marginal NHL players.   Tage does not play with NHL coordination.   He muffed chances to shoot and to pass and he was very poor on breakouts.  Mitts, I don't know?  He needs to be stronger and I think he needs to go to the AHL for awhile.  He plays without confidence.

Watching Sobotka and Tage versus ROR was humbling.  I would not make that trade again.  Not sure we would be the same team with ROR in our locker room but he was one of the best players on the ice every time he was on it.

Dahlin missed a golden chance to score.  He let someone get behind him again and made a few careless plays.  He excited the crowd a few times with his speed and moves.  He gets "snuffed out" at times, that will change once he gets stronger.

Was not impressed with Scandella's game and prefer to see Beaulieu.  I think Nathan brings more offense and more grit too.  I think McCabe should be on 1D pair with Risto, not Pilut.

Sheary plays alone.  Very noticeable player, high motor, always working but there is never another Sabre with him to create offense.

KO and Sobotka did nothing.  E-rod at least hustles and shoots the puck.  Ellie should not see the ice anymore.  He refuses to shoot.

For our next game, which is at home, I think calling up a player from Rochester to replace Eliie would be wise.

Overall  the Sabres were totallhy outplayed, they took long periods off with no offense generated, and they were careless in their own end.   If you did not look at the standings before the game you would think the Blues were the superior team.   Making to worse, some of the worst performing players on the Blues team scored today.   Last years Sabres came in here and took the Blues to a shootout.

I paid almost $450 for 3 tickets.  That hurts.

I’m fairly confident that your attendance had nothing to do with result, but 0-16 might require a ban on you seeing your beloved.  And $450 for three seats in St. Louis when they struggling surprises me.  I agree we need a call up.  Elie to Roch should happen by Saturday.  Give the writers for the News and the fans something to talk about.  I think CJ, Oloffsson and Nylander are destined for a spot sooner or later.  Give one or two a shot and see if they click.

Any interest in Spezza as a stop gap for a year? I doubt he'd cost much and would certainly give us an experienced center akin to Carter just without the awful contract.

None for me.   Production has fallen fast the last three years.  Plus he will be 36 in June.   For me it’s Staal (33) or Kevin Hayes as 2019 UFA centers.   I’m also not in favor of trading any of the first-round picks to dump salary or trade for a second line center.   Look at the Ryan Kessler trade for the Anaheim ducks.   They basically gave up Two first round draft picks and a prospect in Bonino for two years of Term on a cap friendly 5mill/year deal.  Thank you no.   I think Staal  can be had for five or less on a short term deal with no risk and no loss of draft selections.

chances are the Blues tear it down after this season if they continue to stink. This year or next, we'll likely have a lottery pick.

That's what we all said about the trade with the Islanders for Vanek.    Of course there is one glaring difference.  Namely that mirror cracking, black cat crossing, indoor umbrella opening, salt shaker tipping, jinxed of a GM we fired.   So, yeah, we got this.

Thing about Jeff is that he's scored two OT winners this season.

As much as I like Housley's coaching this season, I'll never understand his OT and shootout personnel decisions.

Except his decision to keep Casey on the bench a few games ago......he is struggling and I thought would not see OT last night either.

Casey Mittelstadt, 2/1 in his last 14.

Jason Pominville 1/2 in his last 12

Kyle Okposo 0/1 in his last 8

Conor Sheary 0/3 in his last 10

Tage Thompson 5 points in 6 games, then nothing in his last 4.

Patrick Berglund, pointless in 14 of his last 15.

We’ve got only three guys producing. Could flipping Jack and Casey wake some of the sleepers up?

    Sheary Eichel Okposo

    Skinner Mittelstadt Reinhart

Don’t risk the damage that would be caused taking Skinner off the top wing.  The experiment with Sheary earlier this year was not sucessful.  What is the rationale for giving Casey more minutes, when he’s already being marginalized by the coach?   He’s playing 11-12 per game and doesn’t deserve that.   I think Phil has a serious problem at 2C.  It’s not Mittelstadt, and from Flags post, it shouldn’t be Vlad, or the other 3 Centers which should remain together.   I agree the second line needs a shake up, but not at the expense of the first or fourths.   Two more losses and I foresee a mid-December call up (maybe Nylander probably Olofson) and Casey might be well served spending some time riding the bus.

  10. Why mess with the fourth line?  Not scoring but playing well together.   Is the thought that Larsson can possibly get Tage involved offensively again?  And that Mitts was not doing it?

It was the trade deadline day.  Miller and Ott were traded to St Louis a few days prior, I think.

I understand this, but a game against those dastardly Flyers is never 'just one game'.  Ever!!

    http://www.nhltradetracker.com/user/trade_list_by_team/Buffalo_Sabres/2.

Matt Moulson deal, Halak to WASH, and McNabb to the Kings.  Murray lost 2 of 3 that day.   One of his better days ?.

I owe you a sincere apology.  I had been a Sabres fan from their inception until I moved to St. Louis in 1992.  I transitioned to becoming a Blues fan shortly after. The Sabres were never on TV, and hockey is such an emotional sport that it didn't take long to make the move. (This doesn't apply to football...I have always been and will always be a Bills fan.)
A week or so ago I decided to start paying closer attention to the Sabres. The Blues are eating it right now, and the Sabres had won 10 straight games! I thought it might be time to get the NHL package and start watching the Sabres. I realized that I could listen to that evening's Sabres game on Sirius radio. I went out to the car and tuned in. The Sabres were winning 5-4 in the game against Tampa. I came in and told my wife I was going to listen to the Sabres. By the time I returned to the car, they were tied, and eventually lost the game. They have not won a game since I decided to become a follower.
I have to shoulder the blame for this most recent downslide. I'm very sorry, Sabres fans.

I always root for the Sabres.  I was throwing crap all over the room when Edmonton won that draft lottery.  But Eichel looks pretty special.  And I hope that Sobotka, Berglund and Thompson work out well.  I'm going to root for the Sabres as hard as I can.

You need to get yourself a Sonos my man.   Listening to XM in your car is so 2006.   Stream XM, WGR55 and all Apple Music in the convenience of your home.

think Samson could eventually move back to Center or is that experiment over?

I think there is one more chance for Sam to slide back to Center.   Phil is growing weary of Casey and his bad play.   He basically called him out on WGR when asked why he did not see any OT minutes.   And he was being polite, as his last four games against high caliber teams has resulted in horrible play.  Sheary and Tage need someone to distribute the puck, and Sam is second only to Jack in that department.   Compare our second line center to that of Toronto, Boston, Tampa, Washington or NYI and we have second class citizen status.   If there is a late December call up at wing, maybe Nylander gets a chance on the right of Jack and does well, I can see Sam taking on this role again.
