Salman Rushdie has been stabbed at Chautauqua.  https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-62524922

Incredibly distressing news. That is absolutely the antithesis of what Chautauqua is about. I grew up just up the road and have spent many hours there at concerts, Sunday morning services, movies, theatre, etc. The 5th standard deviations on the curve are having way too much effect on the vast majority of us and I'm talking about those at both of the far ends. A prayer said for Mr. Rushdie.

A lot of us can't wear US flag stuff or fly US flags anymore because of the way it's been co-opted by certain groups.  It's been this way since about 2003-4.  Like @Weave, I'm sorry this phenomenon has been exported northward.

EDIT:  I miss my US flag swim trunks, but let's not pretend that I'd fit into them today, either!

Just really thankful you didn't type Speedo.

What it means is a lot of teams were as excited about getting their Gaucher or their Pickering as the Sabres were about Kulich.

More evidence of how its silly to get upset when a team goes off the board from the consensus list. Nobody knows who the best player available is. Everyone is basing their choice through different criteria, different information and different filters.

That's a big component of the bad teams staying bad teams. New coaching, new management, new scouting all working with players drafted for a different system leads to the wash, rinse, repeat cycle. This is part of the reason I want to see progress from this upcoming season of Sabres hockey, but won't be devastated if they don't make the playoffs. Playoffs this year would be great, but compare that to a solid organization with lots of playoffs in the future and I'm willing to wait.

  4. Thanks much for the replies. Even the "funny" ones.

I just turned 64 and have been working the past few years on a when I want to basis. I still enjoy working, especially when I pick and choose when and where. Work has not been as important since having a little fight with Prostate Cancer. But watching the nest egg getting battered just on the verge of retirement has been difficult to take.

Thanks again for the input. Some interesting ideas and I appreciate the feedback.

  5. After doing a topic search, I know for sure I will not be seeking investment advice from Andrew Peters since his prognostications are totally off base.

I spent several hours last week and this weekend looking at our IRA, Roth IRA, SEP and cash accounts. Admittedly the markets have been volatile this year, but the fees and expenses charged are what is killing me. It's of little consolation to only be down a little compared to the market, when they are still charging me the same fees as if they had increased our account values by 25%! I'm seriously considering moving everything to a discount broker and doing inexpensive index funds and money markets.

What do you do to keep your nest egg growing without the vultures pecking away at it?

My apologies to you if you are a vulture and/or financial advisor. Like all professions, some are better than others.

Scrubs are nothing more than adult pajamas and I love them, you can wear them to a formal gathering because people assume you just got out of surgery or something important. I can wear them doing yard work because they don't stain easy, just a casual day at Niagara falls, Sure, scrub pants and a T shirt.

    Plus they're comfy as *****

Quite possibly the #1 reason I have stayed in medicine all of these years!

  7. KA can pick the two best reclamation projects and sign them to team friendly prove it contracts. Those 2 and Anderson will get the net when they are hot and sit when not. That's  keeping UPL with the Amerks all season long or until he's proven he is ready to be an NHL goalie.

  8. Talbot with a 3 year term and no clauses just in case the kids surprise us and are kicking the door down sooner than expected.

Subban for #2  in Rochester and to be the #3 for the Sabres, in the hope he is never needed to actually fill that role with the Sabres. I say number 3 because I would like to see UPL get a full year as the #1 in Rochester and be ready in 2023-24 to be a real NHL #1 or #2 for the remainder of his career. I'd be more than happy to have UPL force his way onto the Sabres sooner than that.

I'm not so high on Husso as some, but any goalie we have a chance at will be a gamble anyway.

Totally agree with the bolded. The second coming of Hasek in his prime is not suddenly showing up on the Sabres doorstep.

Given what we know about KA and his approach to team building, a top priority is that the player wants to be Sabre. That limits the pool of available talent.

    How about no.

Spot on. At this point there are lots of UFA tenders out there that will be available to fill the roster in Cincy this year. Maybe even help in Rochester. Who knows, one of them might have suddenly reached the point of figuring it out and surprise us all.

I think everyone is in that boat.  The range on some of these guys is incredibly wide.  Bichsel's range with 16 rankings is 17 to 55, Pickering 16 to 53, Snuggerud 8 to 42.  Lambert is 5 to 42. The Russian factor alone could make or break all the rankings and also blow up the actual teams' drafting.

Although it looks to be an incredibly weird draft with all kinds of drama involved, I have to say thank you to all those who have dug in and provided a months worth of awesome reading. It's been fun for me to watch the lists come together as everyone has made their arguments for how to build this team and provided their insights on players and strategies that best fit the teams needs.

I have no idea where KA is going with this draft, and I'm not sure even he knows how it's going to play out. I do agree with those who say how important this draft is for the Sabres. I see these 4 picks in the top 41 as the icing on the cake that when combined with the remaining 2022 picks filling the pipeline or being used to maybe plug a hole or two in the roster.... wow! This is going to be a fun few weeks as we watch the 2022-23 Sabres being put together.

My $0.02 on the draft is that it is only one part of the recipe for the upcoming season(s). It's going to be a crazy draft, so don't lose your mind over getting or missing on any particular player. There is still free agency and a potential trade or two that need to be put into place. We have to wait and see what the roster looks like on the eve of training camp before we know what the Sabres have created for us. Let's all hope for that #1 GT somewhere along the line.

Thanks again to everyone and GO SABRES!!!

To be clear, I like Adams and think he has done a nice job but I think he overplayed his hand with the goalie situation and I really hate this thought about saving spots for prospects.

I fully agree with that sentiment Tom. My previous post should not be construed otherwise. This coming season is the pinch point of wanting the team to get better and wanting the youngsters to get good enough to contribute in the NHL. Most here seem to agree with the idea of "bubble team". I just don't want KA to be in too big of a hurry and press forward with expensive help that also carries a long term. That's the kind of XGMTM move none of us want to see again. Let the kids grow and when they are ready they are ready, and not before. At the same time, a winning environment would certainly be a positive for everyone involved. Like I said, a pinch point that may leave some fans less than thrilled.
