I've argued it elsewhere, but I think guaranteeing Cozens starts at 3C next year is a mistake. If he earns it in camp / early in the season? Sure, let him ride.

In the meantime, I'd rather he break in on wing first, next to a veteran center who can manage the load of center responsibility while we adjusts.

Example 3rd line:   Kahun Tierney Cozens

I agree with the sentiment, but feel as though Cozens getting sheltered minutes at 3C would be acceptable. IMHO, retaining Larry for the 4C is crucial for this to work. Lazar maybe can handle the 4C, but we know Larry can do it.

The Kahun/Tierney/Cozens line would be very interesting. 3 interchangeable centers, all with the potential to play minutes on lines 1 or 2 if needed. I like it!

Hey Weave, I'm at Chautauqua right now! My family has a cottage on the lake just outside Chautauqua Institution. Where are your fave fishing spots here?  Would be fun to connect over a cast and a Labatt Blue!

40 years ago, the most reliable spot for me was the south end of Camp Merz for SMB. Or look for all the other walleye boats piled one on top of the other and work a worm harness as deep as you possibly can.

    My own awesome contribution....

My rollercoaster is pulling into station.  At the 11th hour I received an unbelievable job offer.  I’m staying relatively local.  Will need to move about 30 minutes away to retain a 35-40 minute commute.  Moving further away from civilization, but not so far from home.  Moving 6hrs away from our son and 4 elderly parents was really stressing us out.  Now we can stay 75-90 minutes away instead.  And we won’t be so close to an early COVID hotspot.  I start in 4 weeks.

It’ll be long hours and alot of responsibility, but worth it to be close should something come up.

Swamp, it’ll still be a journey for that Manhattan.

No need to be searching for new fishing holes. Good to hear that things have worked out for you.

I cringed at trading Reino when I first read it but, this set of trades is pretty appealing when you factor in not only the improved roster, but the cap benefits. Linholm’s contract is ridiculous, and he slightly out produced Reinhart last year, and is listed as a centre. He’s going to be making 2-3 mil less per than Sam.

What’s clear is for an even reasonably creative mind there appears to be numerous available avenues for improving this team this offseason. Absolutely can’t (but they could) line up opening night looking like:

    Olofsson - Eichel - Reinhart

    Skinner - Cozens - Kahun

    Mittelstadt - Johansson - Thompson

    Aspund - Lazar - Okposo

Please, I beg that this does not happen.

I'll see whatever else shakes out and generally accept it for what it is. Cozens starting the season as anything more than a sheltered 3C is totally unacceptable to me at this point in time. Even if he is head and shoulders the best 2C in training camp, he should still start the season at 3C and see < 15-16 minutes of TOI including the power play and maybe penalty kill if he has the chops for that.

If you are going to acquire a 2C in a deal, even in a packaged deal, I doubt that the trading team will include their lower first round pick. A young but established 2C is a valuable commodity. If you want to secure one you have to pay a steep price.

JBots on line 2 for you Mr. C. He has some questions for you.

  6. I voted yes, but have concerns. Many of the above mentioned subjects, on both sides of the aisle, are valid.

I believe it is about finding the right fit at GM and coach. The Pegula's seem to have found that with the McBean combination for the Bills and it is showing rewards. They have struggled to find that connection with the Sabres. My suspicion is that Ralph caught their attention as someone they trust and believe in, much like Sean did with the Bills. We will see if the Ralph/Kevyn fit is as good as what we are getting with McBean.

I also believe they are in deep water with their many entities. Concentrating on one energy company and building it into a multi-billion dollar behemoth took knowledge and focus. They have taken those hard won riches and entered into a unique landscape where only the super rich can tread. Their focus is now scattered and the personalities are totally different in this new land. The learning curve has been long and steep with the Sabres. Let's all hope they have finally figured it out.

    This effing team man

What?!!?!??? And he played while dealing with this problem? I'm going to jump to the assumption that Terry and Kim were aware of this issue. If not, everyone from JBots on down is gone. If so, I'm taking a giant step toward the please sell the team side of the argument.

Botterill’s GM Chair better be a raging inferno next season, because these comments should be triggering warning alarms at One Seymour Knox Plaza

He's got 2nd degree burns right now. 365 days from now, the fire will be out because he's proven himself to be totally inadequate as a GM (70% chance IMHO) or because he made HUGE strides during the 2020-21 season and the ship is not sinking(20% chance IMHO). Leaving 10% unknown due to the Pegula's not wanting or being able to make a tough decision.

"Boston Energy"???   Jimmy "ZeroGoalDoucheBag" Vesey gets a promotion because "Boston Energy"?!

Not so much a promotion as it is a hope and a prayer that something good might happen. I'll be as shocked as the rest of you should that miracle take place.

A friend of mine got his MBA at Georgia Tech right after he finished undergrad, and he pretty much said the same thing - go big or go home.  He said no one cares if you have one from a smaller state or private school (he works in HR for a major bank), it's all about the name of the school on the diploma.

There is a 3 part answer to this question. The school is definitely one of them and the most easily recognizable.

The other two are a specific program that has a reputation much greater than the school's name and/or specific professor(s) that have the power to drive the value of your degree beyond the school or program reputation. Both of these are much harder to identify, but could provide a better experience in the long run.

  11. Never a bad idea to invest in yourself.

Being in a niche' position, the MBA will broaden your horizons and potentially make you even better at your current job. That could pay off the investment right there.

Or, the MBA will provide the entry point to other career opportunities and a new line of friends/peers/other MBA students to have as resources in a job search.

Sounds like you are in a good spot that has some changes taking place. The MBA could be your insurance policy for whatever happens.

  12. Is there anyone left in Rochester that is not injured and has also ever even sniffed NHL talent? Consequently Bogo playing some RW might not be great, but at might be the best fit until MoJo is back. Plus it would be fun to watch him go into the corners. That would make for some fine entertainment.

Asplund will make his NHL Debut Tonight

The Sabres now are icing a full complement of Rasmi.

Play every shift of every game like you are never going back to Rochester young man. Demonstrate to your teammates that you are providing 100% effort every second and are here to make a difference. Best of luck on your first game in a hall of fame career.

    It's worth repeating.

There's no one coming to save the day here. There's the Dahlin development caveat, to be sure, but how much difference does one player make? We have some young guys, Mittelstadt is developing, Jokiharju, but other teams have young developing players, too, we can't forget that. Cozens is a good prospect and I'm as high on him as anyone, but he's not going to be an impact player anytime soon.

The rest of our good players...they are in their primes, right now. Eichel. Reinhart. Skinner - and he's getting paid like it, and he'll be 30 in a couple seasons. We have some cap space to work with, but the amount we'll actually have is becoming a bit of a misnomer, considering how many spots we'll have to fill.

When it seems like we are far from just being a a playoff team, winning a round or two seems like another universe, I'm not sure internal development of what we have right now is even close to bridging even that first gap.

It's possible things will just all of a sudden click with what we have and we'll be good, but it's tough to count on that. It's looking like it'll either be several more years of building through the draft, or some big trade shake-ups that'll get this thing moving. Considering the ages of our good core forwards right now, I am highly skeptical it's feasible to say that "stay the course" and just keep on drafting high is going to get it done.

We need a trade, or two. No one is off limits, all options need to be open.

Agreed, but the chances of a win/win for both parties is difficult with some of these guys. They are so difficult to value. We love them too much at the same time that we hate them. JBots has the worst job in town right now. I hope he has what it takes to keep the ship afloat with so many leaks, then maybe work on setting course for a playoff appearance.

Colin Miller is the best defenseman we have healthy-scratched in many years.

I think he's been better than McCabe (not going to sit because of his A) and Dahlin (hard to see him sitting) both recently and overall, even if his play has tailed off a bit.

Miller sitting indicates to me that some Dmen are getting showcased tonight.

I'm not really a GM, but I play one (a really bad one) in my dreams.

  16. I agree with Eleven. Any trade Bots makes will have to be a good trade for the Sabres. He is hardwired that way, otherwise there would have been 1-2 more trades before camp started.

If he has a good trade in front of him, I hope he flips the switch and makes it known that what is being seen on the ice is unacceptable.

I'm happy when they win (obviously).  I know they will lose their share.  What I can't stand is a team that plays with no heart.

Few seem to have the heart to play the whole game. I'm looking at you team captain Jack Eichel. YOU NEED TO CHANGE THIS ATTITUDE. IT STARTS WITH YOU!

Seemingly, none have the spine to play NHL hockey. If you can't stand up for yourself, at least stand up for your teammates.

Last but not least is the dumb plays have to end. This is on the coaching staff and they have lots of work to do.

I started the season not expecting the playoffs and thinking this was another year of building the team for the long run. After what I saw this weekend, I'm wondering if the pieces are there. Right now the answer is no. Ralph has lots of work to do, and I'm thinking he doesn't have the tools he needs to make it happen.

We will see what the team looks like at the end of November.
