The problem with working around the problem is the price on last minute bookings. It would be another $1k just to get it squared away. It’s basically paying an extra $1k for a ticket.. not worth it.. and frankly, not affordable in my economic playbook.

lufthansa has been offline most of the day, but as I was working my way through a refund, literally waiting on hold for 5 minutes for them to arrange the final details I received text that I was rebooked out of Munich. I’ll get to ARN 3 hours later..but I WILL get there.  She came back from hold to ask for my final confirmation and I was able to save the trip.

now I am sitting in Rochester waiting for my flight to Newark.. which is delayed. But I had time to kill.

hell of a day so far...

It will be worth the pain and agony. Brother in law married a Swede and they are in Gavle. We always have a great time when we visit.

  2. We will not see the roster that the Sabre's ice until 01Nov at the earliest. There will be changes and adjustments. Enjoy the hockey to the best of your ability in the meantime. Don't let this this short period of time ruin your life or your love of the Sabre's.

Allow me to get the 2019 hunting season started. Not a great pic with the waist deep grass and being taken about 30 minutes before sunset. We were only about 200 yards (183 meters for our Canadian friends) from the slough, then approximately 4 miles in the John boat back to camp. We made it home just before last call at 2am and toasted our good luck with a very nice Oban 14. Although I prefer the Oban 20, it was a fitting tribute. Had tenderloin steaks on the grill last night. Devine.

    Agree.

No goalie is “the answer” until the team in front of them are solid and deep. Then, as a team they should succeed.

At this point, no goalie in our system is “the answer”. Hell, Binnington wasn’t the answer ... until he became one with a solid team and great coaching supporting him.

Binnington still isn't necessarily the answer for the Blues. He was just good enough to get them the 4 wins they needed in each round of the playoffs. He did not light it up, nor was he doing headstands, but they won Lord Stanley's Cup.

I agree that Ullmark has some work to do. I hope the best Linus shows up this season and has many years playing for the Sabres. Having consistently solid defensive play in front of whomever is in net will help all of them, of course. That is something we have not seen from the Sabres in many years.

So oncologist said 2 bouts of Chemo 2 weeks apart and 6 weeks of radiation... Sound like a lite prison sentence... hopefully though that is it and i am cured... odds are decent... but gonna have to give up my fluorescent tan.  Headed to Canandaigua for 2/3 of a week before it starts.

    You got this.

I did 9 weeks of radiation last year for prostate cancer. A year later it was just a nuisance in my life, and you will find the same at this time next year.

Check your PSA's guys. Catch it before it's too late. As for the ladies,  get your parts checked regularly and if something is going on, catch it early.

    Over/Under ....  200 goals during the contract?

No criticism of JBot or today, but I’ll take under.

I like the idea you've offered here Neo. How about a step further and think about a complete player and how many points he will have over the 8 years? Where are you drawing the line at that would make you happy that his production is equal to or greater than the contract? 400 points, 450 points, 500 points, 550, 600? If Skinner gives us 500 points over the life of this contract ( I think this is achievable, especially as the team improves over the the next few years that he is in his prime) I would be okay with that, but absolutely expect more from him. Production greater than the value of his contract is the 600 point range for me. I hope he reaches that lofty level by the end of year 6!

I don’t disagree with this, but I don’t remember O’Reilly playing the stop and start game as much as Sam does. It’s more the accelerating getting back that concerns me. A good coach can get players to buy into new responsibilities, though, and with the right set of wingers I think he could excel. Hockey is moving away from the traditional responsibilities anyway, but it’s hard to not expect more from centers.

This. It's not so much about Sam being able to play C, it's more about his wingers and someone always taking defensive responsibility if Sam gets caught below the goal line.

I think the prospects are even. In reality they are not. I have less info than the Sabres. Also we know in the end that they will not have even careers. Hence my reference to game theory.

I will try to summarize. It is hard for me to rank the players in 5-10 because I have limited info on them. In the end however, 1 of them will be the best and 1 of them will be the worst of that grouping. The Sabres have more info and I hope they make the right decision. At the end of the day, these 5 prospects will not be the same.

Most teams are going to have their boards set by now, with only a significant medical issue found at the combine having a big impact. That said, they are also stratified into much tighter layers than what the armchair scouts and GMs see. Liger's group of 5-6 second tier prospects are going to be dissected into layers 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d ... by the teams. The top 100 kids have had every aspect of their game and their lives looked at by every team. The difference between player 2a and 2d can be huge in the eyes of a GM. Those same two players are seen as interchangeable to those of us on the outside.

When was the last five star coach to be hired by either the bills or the Sabres?

Scotty Bowman is all I got. That may be it in the entire history of both franchises.

While this does not preclude a brand-name coach from taking the job, there are 100 team years of history that says our two sports teams are not destinations for such people.

     Adjust your expectations accordingly.

  10. I don't have any idea who Tyler Randell is..... but we need someone like him on the Sabres. Veteran leader who takes time with the young guys to show them what they need to know, and to be professional hockey players. In my mind the more important piece of the puzzle that was missing this past season was the lack of leadership from the players themselves. Eichel may be captain, but I didn't see it from him. Give me Tyler Randell, or his NHL level equivalent. That is the missing link that the Sabres need most.

Didn't mean to steal the thread. I hope Borgen shows up bigger, stronger and ready to play next fall. If his skills improve to match his attitude, we've got a nice player for the next 10 years.

  11. In December it was inconceivable.

In January it was remotely possible.

    In February it was plausible.

In March it was beyond conceivable.

In April it is to the point where their firing PH is almost (>95%) a given. There is no argument, that I am aware of, that can be made in his defense. Sad, but true. Earlier this season I would have never thought it possible as I viewed this year as the last year of the rebuild and Phil would be here next season with a competitive team. Can't say that now. Not even close.

  12. Kona.

Several Hilton and Marriott time-share condo locations in the area. Agree to do the "tour" and get your lodging for a greatly reduced price. It's about $100/night for the each additional bedroom. That way you can save $$$ by not eating out for every meal, although there are some local places that are reasonably priced. Costco on the north side of Kona. Stock up there for whatever you need. Also a Walmart and Safeway in town. Tons of stuff to do. Make sure you spend at least a couple days just relaxing by the pool.

We've also seen too many flashes of the same garbage that we've seen for the past decade.

Agreed. We've seen more than flashes. Overall, I doubt there is anyone that visits this board who is not disappointed with the results of this season. There are many unanswered questions at this point. The next 6 months will tell us if JBot has what it takes to be a long term, successful GM.

I predict it will be a disappointing one again. Botteril is the type of guy who takes things at his own pace and wont make any quick moves without careful and thorough evaluation (look at the Skinner situation where he wanted to see more of him rather then try and make a deal before he continued on the pace he was going and getting more expensive).

They saw this as another building/development year and wont make and rash decision to try for the playoffs because it wasnt part of the plan for this year. He will make some moves after the season for next year where they will have a goal of making the playoffs. Had they made the playoffs this year it would have just been gravy for them, but they dont want to risk any potential in the future by not sticking to their plan.

I would expect there may be a few veteran UFAs moved if teams are interested, but I would not expect them to buy unless it's a young almost ready prospect or someone with some term left on their deal

Spot on. Although I would like to see something happen to improve the team now, it's much more likely to happen around the draft.
