In his case, the latter. Keith from Let’s Go Amerks went back and looked at a lot of those assists and found they were mostly nothing.
-
He was not good at all. He piled up a bunch of secondary assists and people used that to push the narrative that was turning the corner or playing well. Reality is he was a drag on the team mostly all year. And Taylor didn’t really punish him for it until the games truly mattered. The Amerks had a playoff spot locked up well in advance. The games weren’t all that meaningful. Once they were, it didn’t take long at all to be benched. He couldn’t handle the intensity of the playoffs.
-
I think I’ve seen his “skill” only a handful of times in actual game action. He’s a practice all star. He doesn’t appear all that skilled against other professionals. Hard to when you never have the puck and lay in the weed along the perimeter.
-
He’ll have a better season. It’s virtually impossible to be worse than he was last year.
-
Johansson is not the other goalie on the Amerks. He will battle Wilcox for the backup job but will likely lose and be the starter in Cincinnati. They still need to sign a starter for Rochester. Likely on Sunday we’ll find out who.
-
He’s the Amerks backup.

The USHL had more players taken than any of the individual CHL leagues. I think it’s clear the CHL has more elite talent, but the USHL is rapidly improving. Evaluation of what? Your problem with what he said makes no sense. He was asked how the USHL wa and he said it’s a very good league and has more older players than the CHL. I’d guess he’s right based on their own internal information. Nothing he said indicts the organizations one way or the other for any reason.
-
It sounded like to me he was saying there are more 19 and 20 years olds overall in the USHL versus the CHL. And I’m sure they have access to more information internally than we do online.
-
I mean, who really cares in the end? I didn’t add it all up, just did an eye test on the average ages. The USHL has 5/17 teams with an average age of 19 or higher while the OHL has 2/20. It’s obvious the USNTDP is an outlier in terms of average age in that league. But it’s splitting hairs.
-
If it is an older league, I’d believe it. A quick look at teams average ages on Eliteprospects and the USHL does appear to have a bit higher of an average age per team. It’s a very underrated league.
-
You also have to consider the CHL agreement with the NHL. It doesn’t allows players drafted from there to play in the AHL until they’re 20 by the end of the calendar year or 4 full seasons in juniors (I believe). European and college players can go to the AHL quicker if they're ready.

Are you referring to Blackwell? He’s not a veteran.
-
He was very clear that they want to, but it doesn’t appear imminent.
-
Well that’s a problem of bad drafting over the years. Devante Stephens is still in the organization, but I doubt he has a future. ECHL call up most likely.
-
He was their best defensemanadt year. Excellent move. Now the need to work on getting Blackwell re-signed next. Defense looks pretty decent right now: Redmond Pilut Borgen Fedun Tennyson

That’s true, but Fasching is the opposite of what Botterill wants. He’s slow and lumbering. I think he tries hard to include him on a deal.
-
Fasching easily. Bailey was one of the only prospects to not be a steaming pile of trash in the playoffs.

Genny’s Kolsch is great. I love Genesee. Between Bock, Kolsch and their Oktoberfest, that covers a large portion of the calendar where you can buy a damn good quality beer for $8 a 12 pack.
-
We’ll just agree to disagree and leave it at that. Evaluating a tandem is weird and I’d disagree even more with that call if that’s the case.
-
Like I said, I think he was the assumed starter next year in Botterill’s mind, regardless of this call up. He’s earned the opportunity. I think the focus in mid March when he was recalled should’ve been in locking in a playoff spot for the Amerks. Sexton and Botterill have spoken repeatedly about it. Yes, the playoffs weren’t in question, but the spot was. Fans shouldn’t be happy with settling for 4th place when 2nd was in reach, AHL or not. I’ve agreed with a lot of things Botterill has done, not this one. Not surprisingly, the Amerks can barely sniff a win with Wilcox. He’s awful. And speaking of Wilcox, maybe you misunderstood my post. I don’t have a problem with him being called up. Overall, they probably don’t have a chance against anyone in round 1. Ullmark or no Ullmark, the team in front of him and been Sabres level bad since February.
-
And they’ve learned what? I doubt whatever plan they had 2 months ago for goaltending has changed. That’s where we disagree. I just don’t think it really meant anything regarding next season. It was a reward, if anything. Which I can understand and agree with. As for playing the Marlies, I get that. Personally, even though they haven’t been good at home, I think it’s important to go for home ice. They clearly gave up on that by bringing Ullmark up. The Amerks weren’t going to pass Syracuse with Wilcox. I’m not here to whine about every call up. I haven’t done that at all. I don’t have a problem with Guhle, even though they didn’t need him. But they had defensive depth. Wilcox is terrible and it seems like the sold out the team down the stretch.
-
Right. I know why he was recalled. I still don’t think it was needed. I’m sure it was a real “evaluation”. I’m sure moves will be made this summer based on the few pointless games he played. The guy is waiver elibilge next year and he’s a lock for Buffalo. I get what you’re saying, but I just don’t buy that it’s truly an evaluation. If you want to recall players and reward them, that’s fine. Maybe tone down the talk of wanting to win and making a deep run in Rochester then? Keep it consistent. Ullmark is unquestionably the MVP and the Amerks were 1 point away from home ice when he was called up. Now they’re going to drop into 4th. I get the fact that it’s a requirement of all Sabres fans to defend every call up or move related to the Amerks, but perhaps they could’ve left him in Rochester to gear up for the playoffs. Don’t think it’s a huge ask or unreasonable complaint. Do you really believe his recall was going to sway roster decisions at G this summer? I personally don’t. Ullmark will be in Buffalo. That’s a lock. It was too small of a sample size, even if he didn’t get hurt, to impact what they do in the offseason. Whatever the plan was in February hasn’t changed from the recall.
-
What was the point of his original recall that necessitated a need for him?
-
Wilcox is horrible, it doesn’t matter. What matters has been the pointless Ullmark recall.
