Tampa also has to pay the real $ for those contracts they picked up. Admittedly it does give big $ franchises an advantage but such is life. What I don’t like is that Tampa can get Kucherov back for the playoffs regardless of the cap. IMHO if your out for the season you are out for the entire season including playoffs

Why wouldn’t you give Derrick Brassard a PTO? He was a 32 pt player last year and won 55% of his draws. He’d be a great player to have around the organization. He’d also be an upgrade over Lazar and maybe Eakin. If he makes the team, waive Lazar and put him on the taxi squad. His two year deal will make it unlikely he’ll get claimed.

I’m not so sure. The Sabres could use the taxi squad to save cap for use later in the season, like a goalie acquisition. No one is claiming Rieder or Irwin on waivers. Even if they do, they are easily replaced by similar waiver players. The issue working in Rieder’s favor is he was signed to kill penalties. With the taxi squad, don’t be surprised if many teams, especially those close to the cap use the squad to save cap.

My understanding is the taxi squad is 4-6 players including 1 goalie. They practice with the NHL team and aren’t in the minors except for cap reasons. Will who gets placed on the taxi squad depend on when the AHL opens? i’m going to assume the following Sabres roster Hall Eichel Reinhart Skinner Staal Olofsson Thompson Eakin Cozens Girgensons Lazar KO Dahlin Jokiharju McCabe Ristolainen Miller Montour Ullmark Hutton Togarski, Rieder and Irwin will certainly be on the taxi squad, but who after that? Davidson? Fogarty? What other offensive players could we place on the squad? Could we see a PTO for a forward with the intent of placing them on the taxi squad? If there is an AHL I’m going to assume they want Routsalainen, Mitts, Asplund and Borgen to start there to get PT, but what if AHL callups are difficult because of Covid protocols? Could that change how someone like Mitts is treated?

I guess. They are spending $100 in real $ for a partial season with little or no fans. What a commitment from ownership. They also are in a cap squeeze for the following season.

Larsson and Mojo are the only relevant losses. Larsson because of his shutdown ability 5 on 5 and MoJo because of his skill, Honestly KA did a good job upgrading both.

lots of parity in the Canadian division in which we would be very competitive. Only 3 proven teams out West in LV, STL and Colorado. I think we’d be the 4th best team in the West. In the Central we’d have to beat out Nashville for 4th which is possible. So yes, I think we’d have a better shot in the other 3 divisions. We signed Hall to go for the playoffs and the realignment hurt those chances.

I agree. That’s why I’ve been saying Dahlin is the key to the season. Defense is far from our problem. Our core group of Dahlin, Risto, McCabe, Jokiharju and Montour are all good to very good players. They have faults, but all are above average NHLers.

I love the thought, but we have a very tough road. Tenn and their running game is a lousy matchup for us in the playoffs and KC is tough on anyone. If we can get to the big game, we 'll have a real chance.
