I guess the issue with this conversation as a whole is what each of us considers "far ahead" or "not so far ahead". To some , 1-2yrs is not "far ahead" but 3-5yrs might be. Others might think "WOW, they're a whole year ahead of us in their build".
But as of today, right now, this season we can't verify which is significantly ahead in all aspects just by looking at their 3-4 games, nor using what happened last year. It's a whole new season in which anything can happen.
the only thing we can say for sure after 4 games is that the Leafs are better offensively but, defensively yikes, I'd have to give us the nod and our D will only get better as Dahlin settles in.
Marner is what the 3rd best forward on their team, 4th if Nylander were there? He'd be easily the 2nd best forward in Buffalo. It will be interesting to see how things shake up over the course of the first 10-15 games
Just now, TrueBlueGED said:We can't verify, but we're not exactly going in blind either. Recent history matters. Yes, it's a new season, but we shouldn't exactly ignore the last two when the Leafs roster is almost identical (while adding Tavares, which isn't exactly a trivial improvement). The Sabres made significant turnover and are certainly looking better than the last couple of season, but they had 43 points to make up in the standings. They can be notably improved and still significantly behind.
can't say it any better than this

This is the best Matthews we'll ever see in our lifetimes.
and i honeslty hope it continues because I want him to command a salary north of $13M/yr. With JT's salary what it is, and what Marner will need, that cap hell will not be enviable. they'll have a hard time with depth and defense with that much tied up in offense.

Sorry to pile on the darkness but blasting this sh!t into the internet stratosphere seems to help lower my stress level enough to function..
My dad decided, against better judgement, to fly to Chicago for work yesterday, despite a nasty brush with bronchitis this weekend. Well, surprise surprise, he's in the hospital as of this morning (impacted bowel from codeine). They're going to keep him overnight. It's good, I guess. Maybe they'll stumble into figuring out what's wrong with him.
But in addition to this, my mom just decided to tell me that she's known for a while that her kidneys are failing. The stress of dealing with him and her diabetes are taking their toll. She's 60.
Can the bad news train f*ck off yet please
Jeez, when it rains it pours. My father in law has pretty tell tale signs of skin cancer, but refuses to see a doctor because he is a Christian Scientist (not to be confused with Scientology) but he believes that you can cure any ailment through prayer alone. in fact, he hasnt seen a doctor since college, so who know's what else could be wrong. i shudder to think.
hope your parents get better and you get some better news.

Marion, the scene you have described is horrifying.
Indeed, my wife talked to some Sheriff friends of ours and they said that right now, there is nothing we can do other than keeping an eye on our kids and minimizing any risk.

Way ahead of Buffalo? Where is Toronto right now if they don't have Tavares but they have Nylander in the lineup? Are they 3-1-0? I doubt it.
The Sabres win Thursday and they have the same record as the Leafs. I think the Leafs are a better team, this year, but I don't think they will continue this pace for the year and I am curious where they will be next year when it comes to managing their salaries.
They have 12 players on the roster that have expiring contracts and that does not include Nylander and what they do with him.
The question regarding the Leafs is sustainability.
They are giving up a league worst 4.25 goals per game. that's crazy. we'd have to give up 10 in our next game to match them. Can't take away from their offense whatsoever, but, is pumping out over 4.25 goals a game sustainable? tough call. lack of defense and reliable goaltending will cause some issues, especially in the playoffs

The logical move is to wait and see what becomes of this situation while watching over your children. At this point it seems to be known that there is an investigation into this particular child and that should lessen any chances of things happening, for now.
On the flip side, this is your children's safety and your mental well being that we are talking about and logical sometimes doesn't have a place. Your wife is correct in that it is possible and you are correct that you never know. The biggest thing to consider is whether you may be overly paranoid wherever you move because of what is transpiring in your neighborhood right now.
I think a good first step is at least doing your due diligence on what you could reasonably sell your house for and where you want to move and how much that will cost. From there determine if it's more or less viable than you are comfortable with. If it isn't something that isn't viable, what will it take to get there?
Removing emotion from it will be tough, but making a rash decision could cause you years of problems you don't want. For now, hopefully it is enough to just watch over your children in your current area and make sure they are safe while investigating your options.
I'd like to think I'd follow my own advice in this situation... but I can feel your struggle in my heart when I think about what if it happening in my neighborhood.
Taking emotion out of it will be tough. this kid is 7 years older than my son and i don't know what i would do if something happened to him that i couldve prevented by moving. for now though we will continue as we have been the whole time, my son is never outside without one of us and that will not change. but, eventually i would like to let my son go to a friends house and not hav to worry about him going alone when he is a few years older. we are going to hold out hope that the family will move once the investigation is complete and the truth is out.

Maybe I'm off on this one, but I get a completely different read from what Marions posted to where this isn't a bullying situation. If I'm wrong, good, because my read is something far worse. Broad terms used to cover just about all bases (and your own ass, at least when it comes to news reports) lead to more confusion.
it is indeed far beyond bullying and its shocking because the kid is 12, I am not far off believing that something happened to him when he ws younger and now he's doing the same thing?
1 hour ago, N S said:Oh, man. When I read the OP and he said the kid was 12 I didn't think to go where you did. I really hope that you are off base here, as you are corect ... that would be far worse.
59 minutes ago, shrader said:Same here. I hate that the possibility even came to mind, but that's the world we live in today.
38 minutes ago, josie said:I thought the exact same thing. My first brush with that world was my neighbor/friend's older brother. He was about 10/11 when he started doing some pretty awful stuff. I was 6 and one of his favorite targets. He had a rough road and a rough childhood, got thrown out of a lot of schools for sexual stuff and pulling knives, but through a lot of intervention and help, him and his sister are doing better these days. She's a former serial Peace Corps volunteer and now works with at risk children to help kids like her brother. But now I'm side noting and projecting. I also hope it's not that. We considered moving because of it at one point, too.
Do what makes you most comfortable. If everyone's hanging in there alright, do some looking. I'd personally wait to see if the situation is rectified via law enforcement/etc. but moving is certainly not out of the cards. Sometimes you need to start fresh and shake off the bad stuff.
i am sorry to hear that you were a traget of his, i can't even imagine the pain from that. they live 5 houses down from us and i just get sick to my stomach whenever we walk by and i think of the kids that have been hurt by him and how i couldnt bare to imagine if it happened to either of my kids.
we are likely in wait and see mode, but, what can law enforcement do to the kid? he's 12. can he be taken to a home for treatment etc? i believe that our school district can not allow him into school, so maybe they will move because of that. i just don't know what to do.

Last week we found out from some friends on our street that their son, along with several others on the street have been vicitmized by another boy. Two kids have come forward so far and CPS and the police are involved and investigating. Supposedly, there are more victims than the two that have come forward but they haven't said anything yet. The kid who has been identified is 12 and his 'victims' have been younger.
3 families including our friends (house on the market already) have already made plans to move and my wife and i are considering it ourselves since we have an almost 5 year son and 9 month old daughter. Are we jumping the gun here? being unreasonable in anyway? I mean nothing has been proven yet, but, we have been very good friends with the one family and we believe them. this is one of the hardest situations i have ever been in, protecting my children is #1 in my life, but the financial stress it will cause is high as well since housing prices have gone up quite a bit since we built ours, but, can you really put a price on the safety of your kids? my wife asked "what happens if we uproot and move only to move into another neighborhood where this could also be happening?" chances of that are slim i would think, but, you never know

IMO, he will 'struggle' early on until he finds his groove and the right line mates.
One thing i noticed about the Vegas game is that Mittelstadt and Thompson had hardly any offensive zone faceoffs, did anyone else notice that? I wouldve thought that line would be used more offensively than defensively, but, it really didn't seem that way.

F2: Sheary - Berglund - Okposo
F3: Nylander - Mittelstadt - Thompson
F4: Rodrigues - Sobotka - Pominville

My only question is whether Baptiste and Bailey will clear waivers. I haven't quite given up on them, though I don't blame anyone who already has.

Agree on the lines, although I do think that we see Sheary and Skinner possibly switch unless Skinner and Eichel figure out who carries the puck and drives the play.

Nylander-Mittelstadt-Thompson again, I really hope they do well again. It would be nice to see them gel and build a lot of chemistry

I want to fight every person who leaves me a voicemail. Its 2018 folks. I know you called. I got a little red 1 on my phone app, telling me who called and when. If you leave a voicemail to tell me you called, you are an idiot.
but, if they leave a voicemail, you can decide if it's even worth calling them back

Read the cap space stuff... then offer or trade Sam for a 1st to someone else, say Edmonton... Trade Girgenson for a 3rd and all you lost is a 2nd and Reinhardt...
I don't think you can get a 3rd for Girgensons though, maybe Ottawa would bite at that

Next time just lie so they have to take a look ?
yeah true, but, they could be able to at least get the person's approximate height and weight for starters. but oh well. that'll teach my neighbors to not lock their doors
-
in our neighborhood, we have had someone stealing things out of people's cars at night. hasn't been breaking into cars, but, has been taking advantage of people who have forgot to lock their doors. we have a facebook group in our neighborhood and a few neighbors mentioned finding their car doors open in the morning and things missing. i have a Nest doorbell with camera and decided to go through that notifications from that night and saw the person walk up my driveway, check the doors on my car and then walk away because i lock them every night. anyway, i called the non-emergency line sheriff's office and told them about it and how several neighbors reported missing items from their cars. he asked if i had anything stolen and i said no, but, i have a video clip of the culprit and asked if they would like to have it and he asked if you could clearly see the person's face, which i said no, and he said well there's nothing we can do about it then.

Random late-night thought about Dahlin...Do y'all see how he sort of skates the opposite of bow-legged, whatever that might be called? It couples with a really wide base. Like, his ankles sort of bend inward, not unlike a young kid who is just skating their first time. Of course, it's not because of a lack of technique - it's how he generates such power from his edges, making his c-cuts and direction changes smoother than maybe anything I've ever seen.
But does anyone think that could do long-term damage to his ankles/tendons/whatever is down there?Sorta like his left skate is doing here. Just seems like it could stress the inside of his ankles, or even knees.
I understand this happens to every skater that pushes off, but Dahlin uses it so much more than anyone I've ever seen and even glides in the stance sometimes in case he wants to change direction quick
Interesting thoughts you have here. Just sharing my own personal story about damage to joints, tendons etc. I have always had issues with my ankles from early on, i would sprain them all the time, but there was always something odd about my injuries. My right ankle would often sprain by my foot flaring out like Dahlin's left foot in the picture, and my left ankle would always roll underneath. Never really thought much of it. Later on in life I started having pain with my left hip that was progressivley worse as i got older. After numerous doctors and Ortho's i finally figured out what was causing my issues. Leg length discrepancy, my left leg was shorter than my right leg. My left foot had been trying to compensate the length discrepancy by rolling out a little bit trying to make up the difference, this explains why my left ankle was always spraining by rolling under. On the other side, my right ankle being on the longer leg would try to compensate and would often look like Dahlin's left foot.
There's a chance that Dahlin might have a leg length discrepancy, even a very small barely noticeable one can cause issues which get worse with age. Deterioration of the ankles can be slowed by having a foot mold done along with a full xray, hip down to feet to determine the exact difference. I had this done and was given inserts with a lift on the heel to raise my left leg. I try to always wear the lift even in my hockey skates, i have not had an ankle injury since. problem is, at almost 40 and just figuring this out a few years ago, the damage is already done. Arthritis in both ankles and left hip, and tendon in my left ankle is hanging on by a thread (no more basketball or volleyball for me).
I am not saying that is what is wrong with Dahlin's ankles, but it's worth a quick check and get the length of his checked.
sorry for the long post

morning skates on game day are important though. they aren't skating so hard that they are tired. it's to keep the legs fresh and keep them active, helps to avoid injury etc.
somewhat related, when i was in the Air Force we used to have physical training tests. most people thought they had to rest for days leading up to the test, which is fine, but, i alwyas performed better when i did light jogs on the days leading up to it and the early morning of my test. jog a mile or two at a 15 minute mile pace, then a few hours later do the test and run as hard as i can. sort of the same thing for these guys on gameday
