Well, then how do you define who the best team is?

People say the best team should have won.  I say, if the team won, they were the best.  There's really no other way to put it.  Any reason for that specific series points to the team that won doing things (or having less fragile players, etc.) than the other team.  They were the best at that moment in time and the reality is, that's the best we can do.  If you want to begin to break down every factor that goes into it, you can.  But the outcome remains the same.

Generally speaking the best team should win it all, but that just doens't happen every year. in 05-06 i believe that we were definitely the best team, but, we had injuries and we didn't win.

How will the Sabres end up in Cap hell?

Eichel $10M, Dahlin will likely get the same if not more than Eichel. Skinner will likely be around $8.5-9M easily. Reinhart has quietly been playing himself into a nice raise over his current salary. He's on pace for 70 points, no reason to expect he can't do that next year as well, 70 points in the NHL gets you around $7M+ these days. If Ullmark and Hutton keep up their great play, both of them will get hefty raises. Bogo has shown what he's worth when healthy, i think we might keep him and he will get a raise. down the road a piece, but Risto will probbaly command a raise on his next contract. Assuming Pilut keeps playing well over the next few years and sticks with Buffalo, he's gonna need a new contract the same year as Dahlin.

It's going to be tricky for the Sabres, I know that the cap will go up a little bit each year, but, it will be difficult no matter what

My point about the regular season is that it's not used to determine who the best team is.... so finishing with 117 or 94 points is irrelevant as long as you get in.  In theory the 117 point team should win... but we know better.

As for the easiest route to the championship, let me try this a different way.  Disregarding the other conference...

Your team plays the teams that finished 8, 4, 2 and gets to the championship.

Your team plays the teams that finished 2, 4, 8 and gets to the championship.

What was the easier road?  They are technically the same although most people would say the first is easier.  I would say that the first provides the most likely opportunity to move into each successive round, but when amassed as the entire path the difficulty remains the same.  You played the same 3 teams and had to beat them. I am not accounting for financials and a desire to play more games.

Examine the first scenario... a common rebuttal would be that 4 could get taken out by 5 and then you;'d play 5.  Well, if that's the case would you consider 5 a tougher team than 4?  I mean, they just beat them.

In the end... you have to beat the best team or hope they lose along the way.  If they lose, are they the best team?

it depends. a hot goalie can really make a difference. I think if the 99 Sabres. They were a joke on offense, decent on defense with in-human goaltending. I do not think we were the best team to come out of the East, but alas, we did under amazing goaltending. The best teams can lose in the quarter finals or whatever they are called now.

Careful... I got roasted when I suggested that the Leafs were not light years ahead of the Sabres in their rebuild earlier in the year.

The playoffs have a tendency to destroy offense.

The Leafs Nation... can suck it.  I don't care what they think.  They've been overestimating their chances since 1967 and are blind the salary cap train that is about to truck their team in the next season or two.

Let's hope that Marner is tough to sign. I saw a tweet and it quoted an interview with Marner's dad, where he said that his son is one of the top 3 players in the world. Maybe there will be issues like with Nylander and what happened and the contract fight. Sabres will have their own cap hell soon enough, but i want to see Toronto struggle mightily this off-season and getting everyone signed

I concede the Sabres will be in a similar cap situation. But that defensive depth.........flashes of 07.....

I try to forget what happened in the playoffs in 05-06. How can you posibly have neough depth to account for all those injuries? Mckee had an infection, Numminen had a heart issue? Kalinen had a broken leg, wasn't there one other injury on defense those playoffs?

Not gonna name names, but remember when there were some that thought the transition to the NHL, what with a smaller ice, better players, more physical, etc., would be very tough for Dahlin? Well, in 41gp last year he had 20 points in the SHL. He has 19 now, in 34gp

And he's only 18! "giggles like a school girl"

This is much more than just this season. The tear down and rebuild is roughly 70% complete. Just a small handful of poor contracts to get through in the next year or 2 combined with the developing wingers in the AHL, the to date successful pipeline globally for the Sabres prospects not yet in the AHL or with the club along with four 1st rd picks in the next 2 drafts, a defense that is clearly better and deeper than the Leafs, 2 net minders that are clearly better than the Leafs current tandem, the tight cap situation the Leafs are going to find themselves in following this season and there is more than enough reasons to project the Sabres as the long term better club.

As for the Leafs playing more time in the offensive zone, I would have thought it was quite obvious from your own mindset on them. If we only have 1 line as opposed to their 3 that can maybe match their pace, it should be a foregone conclusion their 3 to 1 ratio spends more time in the O zone than our deficient lines.

I am not saying that you are wrong that the Leafs play more time in the O-zone, I am curious to see that actually breakout and exactly how much time difference there is, that way we could come up with ratios, we could really see where the teams are at offensively. it could be broken down into the Leafs score X goals per 10 minutes in the O-zone while the Sabres score X goals per 10 minutes in the O-zone, seeing those averages vs how many goals are given up per 10 minutes in the defensive zone. Any stats guru's out there?

I agree the Leafs will have some cap issues soon, but, so will the Sabres, i dont think you can deny that. here are some salaries and some projections

Eichel $10M - Tavares $11M, Dahlin $10-11M - Matthews $12-13M, Skinner $9M - Marner $9m, Reinhart $6.5-7M - Nylander $6.9M  Plus we have to assume that Mittelstadt will need a raise, Ullmark will get a nice raise, if we keep Hutton as well, he will get a nice raise. Pilut will likely earn a nice raise. Things are going to get tricky in 3 years for the Sabres salary cap wise, not just the Leafs.

The reason 5hey are a +24 is because they spend a greater deal of time in the O zone then Buffalo does. As was pointed out, as secondary scoring for Buffalo comes on line, I like our chances in a series against the Leafs.

i would like to see the actual break out, but, i couldnt find anywhere that can prove your theory about the Leafs playing more time in the other teams zone than the Sabres. As it sits, the Leafs are better offensively and defensively with more reliable secondary scoring.

when will this secondary scoring come on line for us? were at like 40% of the season over and none of Sheary, Okposo, Mittlestadt, Thompson, P-ville, Sobotka is reliably scoring.

  10. So i was reading and trying to understand the rules regarding Berglund and if both sides agree to mutually terminate the contract. The cap re-capture penalty would go to the team that offered the contract. If that happens in this case, I think most of Sabreland would get a good chuckle out of that, watching the Blues take back the cap hit.

  11. love all the hot takes about Eichel even after yesterdays game. some random quotes i saw last night;

"Eichel is on a hot streak right now, but there are still 15 other guys I would take over him"

"Eichel is only good because he has Skinner"

"he's a showboat a__hole every time he scores" (from a Bruins fan who probably thinks Marchand isn't a d-bag)

"he still isn't in the same world as McDavid and Matthews"

Quick note: 20 of our first 34 games this season (59%) have come against the top 15 teams (that is, teams positioned to be in the playoffs at this very moment). 27 of our next 48 (56%) come against the other bottom 15 teams. So our schedule does get noticeably easier now. This certainly helps our chances of ending the 7-year streak without playoffs. The border between making and missing the playoffs is currently 34 points, so we do have an 11-point buffer.

    Just win baby!

thanks for the break down, certainly helps the confidence going forward. here's to hoping that we don't 'play down' to our competition in these coming games agains the lesser teams.

  13. It has been amazing watching Jack's confidence grow every game. I don't know what was prettier, his two top shelf goals on the short side with a space barely big enough for the puck to get through, or his two passes yesterday on both Skinner's goals. Just unreal. He's no tied for top 5 points in the league, only a few points behind McDavid.
