    Thank you.

One interesting thing is the comparison of the PK.  One of the things I really remember about 05-06 was the great PK.  I knew if we got a penalty 9 times out of 10 they’d kill it and keep us in the game.  They finished 2nd that year at about 88%.

This year I’m getting a similar feel.  We are 6th right now at 83% but we are getting better each week.

Special teams drove that 05-06 team (they also finished 3rd on the PP.  They aren’t quite the driver this season but if we can get the PP clicking, this team could become just as dangerous as 05-06.

AND actually play better in the 1st period...yikes, we'd be scary.

Special teams is super important, was it the Winnipeg game that we killed the penalty late in the game that went in to OT and then took another one to finish OT?

I’d love to hear what Pommers thinks since he has been here for both turnarounds. Then again so have Chris Taylor and Jbot to a certain extent.

There is a similar feel, but the cores of the two teams are completely different.

The 2005-6 was a team of guys at or near their peek.  Drury was 29, Kotalik 26, Briere 27, Connolly 24, Max 25, Campbell 26, Kalinin 25, Lydman and McKee 27, Hecht 28.  Even Miller was 25.  The 3 Kids, Pommers (22), Roy (22) and Vanek (21) had much more experience as pros then some of our kids today.  Only Vanek was a blue chip player.

This team has a different pedigree which may mean a longer run of success.  The core is also younger.  Dahlin is 18, Mittelstadt 19, Eichel 21, Reinhart 22 and Ristolainen 23.  The only key players arguably in their primes are Skinner 26, Sheary 26, McCabe 24, Scandella and Bogo 28.  Skinner, Jack, Casey, Bogo, Sam, Risto and Dahlin are all top 10 draft picks.  With that core, plus top 10 pick like Nylander, we could have a decade worth of great hockey vs 2 years.

definitely haven't thought of it this way, great thinking and post

I thought the joke was that Phat Phil like donuts. Did he shift to hot dogs without telling us?

I have followed a Pens blogger for a few years because he knows hockey and he's a good writer, anyway, i saw a lot of jokes about hotdogs, but, put a piile of donuts in front of Phil and I'm sure he wouldn't be sad haha

But a lousy team looking to sell off a good roster player probably wants picks and/or prospects, innit?  And if the Sabres make that kind of trade -- like, say, a low #1 for Panarin or KO, Nylander, Guhle and a low #1 for Kane -- doesn't that make them a contender this season?

I think you're right about this -- I would guess that he is a pretty good leader and is well-respected in the room.

Maybe it's just me, but I haven't liked KO's game for the past few games.  Nice assist to Casey last night though, to be sure.

they could pull this off if it wasn't for those meddling kids and that darned salary cap

    This is outstanding

my friend thinks it could be better even though i told him it rocks. he wants to change it up a little and maybe add some crossed sabres on the body of the Buffalo and some bigger horns.

we are probably coming to Buffalo for the Red Wings game in February and want to bring it and see if we can get it autographed by some players, i think getting a laugh out of the guys seeing it would be good enough

That's cool to hear! I did the video game design thing for awhile and while I really enjoyed the work I did, the culture was terrible, and like you said, to go that next level I'd have to move to a coastal city.. and that simply wasn't in the cards. The pros and cons would've been magnified and I was already miserable. Designing for the staffing industry now certainly isn't my ideal passion but it's a good learning curve. Who knows what's next. I'd like it to be sports, but again, the culture could be really tough to handle in a similar way. I'd be happiest doing solid design work/advertising but I just don't think I'm good enough for that stuff.

well good luck in figuring out the next step in what line of work will make you happy. i am almost 40 and I finally found a career that i can be happy doing until i retire. sometimes it can take a while and it isn't always easy along the way, but, you'll get there.

    Niice.

Yeah that's one of the big reasons I went after this gig. Just being an illustrator does not get you stable employment, and this only happened because a friend worked there and knew I was capable of learning more stuff quickly. But if that can be my special weapon in an otherwise useful arsenal, I'll have a better shot at those real jobs.

I've been teaching myself basics, html, java, css, scss, a touch of python here and there on codecademy (I tried ruby and my brain just shut down) but it's pretty much worthless until I actually have to make a project happen. We're all Wordpress and I am virtually an infant in terms of knowing what to do there. Bootstrap, widgets, etc... noooo clue. Don't even know what I don't know. But that'll have to change!

The trouble is the people who can really teach me/walk me through the setups in place here are all leaving...

i have been around the block and in a few different industries and learning something new especially when it isn't on your own time is icing on the cake.

a friend of mine is artistic like yourself, he got his degree in 3-D animation from Full Sail with the intention of being a video game designer, but, after graduation he realized that he'd need to be in cities like San Jose, San Fran, Seattle where the cost of living doesn't lineup with what they make, not to mention he was 31 when he finished his degree, an old timer in the video game world. like you said, it's who you know in a lot of circles, and fortunately i knew someone and he got an interview and now he works for the Air Force doing 3-D design in an intelligence setting, making products for the DoD and he absolutely loves it. Like you, he's been teaching himself python and a few other things as he goes.

side note-my friend decided to get into hockey and be a Sabre fan, we came up with an idea and he 3-D designed and printed it out with a 3-D printer and now we are doing the finishing touches of a Buffalo pooping on a Maple Leaf, we are considering doing a whole bunch and selling them, market is pretty small though haha

    This is very true.

It's also good because now I'm going to absolutely 100% need to learn web dev, emails, video editing AND print...which will pretty much round out my designer toolbox and hopefully make me a much more attractive candidate when I feel it's time to spam the Sabres with my resume again...

getting paid to learn something new is a great and its a resume builder. my last job asked me to teach myself java and said i could do it a few hours a day, pretty awesome

So in the 9ish months I've been at my new full time job... In the creative room alone, the head developer quit, the only print/collateral person is in the process of quitting- leaving 3 devs and 0 print/design (which is what I was expecting to take over). One of those devs went on maternity leave and there's some question as to if she'll come back. 2 devs. Now one of those devs is moving to California, and we're all kinda expecting him to find a new job out there sooner rather than later... 1 dev. And he just put in his 2 weeks yesterday. 0 devs at a web dev marketing company.

There is now one person learning basic web dev, and me, who has never really touched it... and somehow we're going to have to learn/pull a load that was already too much when everyone  who were wizards at this stuff were here. They've been searching for replacements for the first person to leave for 6 months to no avail.

the next few months may kill me... at least I can basically say "you better pay up" when the sh!t hits the fan and I'm woking insane overtime on a salary...

silver lining---job security, they can't afford to lose you now

Also teams aren't trading those ROR type of players. I would target a younger guy. Mitchell Stephens for example in Tampa. Trade them for him and a cap dump while giving them a First or whatever.

Dunno if we could tak on a cap dump without moving another roster player, i think the Sabres only have something like $1.3M in space right now

Which included punting ROR as hard as he could.

punting is word that needs to be used more outside of football, i like 'sacked' as well. my wife and i watch the Premiere League and i loved it the first time i heard that a manager was 'sacked' for the team being garbage

I’m laughing a super villain style belly laugh. There’s a reason Moulson, despite his abject uselessness was allowed to collect the full value of his contract and RoR was punted with all possible haste.

Yeah, it was a shame that Moulson didn't work out, great person, but the game moved on from him unfortunately.

  13. There is obviously a lot of talk about RoR here and rightfully so. Something occured to me just now after reading all these posts.

I'd like to share a story, I will try to keep it as short as i can. Bear with me, i do have a point and it's about RoR.

In Eichel's rookie year, I had just got stationed in Texas about 4 hours away from Dallas. I met 2 other Sabres fans that were also stationed there with me. That year the Sabres were scheduled to play in Dallas just before T-giving on a Saturday night so we decided to get tickets and make a weekend out of it. Remembering that Moulson was in charge of the "tickets for the troops" program, i reached out to him on Twitter, told him that 3 Buffalo guys stationed in TX would be at the game and that we were hoping to get some auto-graphs. He messaged me back a day or two later and asked for our names and if we needed tix. I gave him our names but told him we had tickets. Fast forward to game day, we spent the day in Dallas (tons of Sabres fans around) Moulson messages me again and asked if we got our VIP passes yet, and i didn't know what he was talking about, so he told me to go to will call and give them my name, turns out Moulson got us passes to come down to the VIP area just outside the locker room for after the game!

Sabres lost 3-0, but we still had fun. We head down to the locker room area and while we are waiting, these 3 super hot girls started making fun of us for our zubaz pants, my santa sabres hat etc. Moulson comes out and chats with us, super cool guy, sad he didn't work out for us. I got pictures with Kane, Eichel, Reinhart, Risto and got a hat auto-graphed as well. So Moulson spends the whole time chatting with us and all that, then says hey I have to head to the bus, thanks for your service and wish we couldve won for you guys. So the team heads to the bus and we leave, as we come around the side of the arena to find a place to drink, we see all the players together walking to the bus except for RoR, who's not with the team, he's on the other end of the block getting into a limo with the same 3 hot girls that were making fun of us earlier. At the time we laughed and that he was the man, but, looking at it a different way, it's almost like he only cared about himself and didn't want to be with the team after a tough loss. Maybe I am reading too much into it, but, that could speak to RoR's character a bit.

    Bump ...

IT'S FRIDAY!! (I am pretty sure, anyway) ...

    IT'S STILL SNOWING!!

I am at my office ... my commute is walking to my office in a nicely appointed basement, which is mostly at ground level.  Windows open for air and I do not have to step out of doors.  Lots of coffee and cholcolate in stock.  I am so good to go it isn't even funny.

Oh, yeah ... I kind of lost track, but this should be the end of week 6 ... and counting ...

    Fantastic, indeed.

I am pretty jealous right now that it's snowing by you. sometimes i miss having a lot of snow. I haven't lived in the snow belt in almost 15 years and everytime i see that there is a storm, i sort of miss being hunkered down in the house, watching movies and drinking bourbon. It snowed on and off here for about 4 hours yesterday but nothing stuck and it doesn't even look like it snowed.

decided to work a half day today and can't wait to leave. I have a big meeting at noon, but afterwards, I'm out. Then I am only working two days next week and then a 5 day weekend off with family that i haven't seen in a while.

  15. it's weird how a win can still get some scrutiny here. it's seems like only a win that was a complete game, like a 4-1 win where the Sabres dominated the play for the full 60 minutes doesn't get picked apart. I'll concede that TB outplayed them last night for good portions of the game, but there's nothing wrong winning a game like that and i don't think its a cause for concern. Hutton played great, but not everyone was 'on' last night, yet we still won, I think that should be celebrated more than a dominating 4 or 5 goal win because it showed that even when they aren't perfect or play a complete game that they are still winning.

i don't see why they can't keep up this pace either, young guys like Mittelstadt and Erod or going to get better and better, especially CM. Some of the really good players in Roc are going to get some chances to shine in Buffalo. The fact that we can say that Larsson has been serviceable if not, pretty good at his job this year is encouraging. the team is buying in and i have a feeling that we haven't seen the best of them yet and we will soon. there are shades of 2006
