What is evidence that ROR was a locker room cancer? Why is the guy that was drinking and doing drugs to go to sleep every night, in a depressive spiral that almost killed him, with boatloads of evidence that this affected his locker room relationships and on-ice play from the most important position on the ice, notoriously absent when the discussion of ROR's pervasive negativity being a reason we're bad, pop up?

I remember reading that RoR quietly asked for a trade at the deadline. I also read that the team was a bit divided, some players followed RoR and others were with Jack. Then there was the end of season comments etc.

I don't feel that Lehner wasn;'t being blammed, in fact, i remember a lot of female dogging about Lehner and his inability to stop a shootout goal and give up bad softies etc. In my limited time on this forum, I have seen comments like "this is a thread about RoR, go talk about Lehner in the Lehner thread" etc.

12-0-0 when Samson Reinhart scores a point.

They really did let the wrong goalie go. But they surely can't think they'd be better with the two pieces that tanked their play on the ice last year, on longish contracts, that they'd been trying to dump for two years, their fifth favorite prospect, when in return they got a guy who is pacing for one of the best scoring-C seasons they have ever had in franchise history, relative to the rest of the league, when their center position has been historically weak? Are you sure that they're bitter about the trade itself?

no, not the trade itslef as they did get the statiscally best player in the deal. they're just butt-hurt that the team is terrbile and even though RoR is lighting it up, it's doing much good.

Also, Smell, you nailed it. Do you remember Jack Nicholson's line in "As Good As It Gets"?

Those "reasonable points" got me banned out of that thread.  Man, those guys are butt-hurt.  From their perspective they clearly won the trade but they're bitter about it because their team sucks hard.  I think the underlying subtext is they don't want to admit Carter Hutton is a good goalie but it peeves them that he got away and he's doing so well with us.

seriously? you got banned from that? Your best point was how they are ignoring the fact that he's a bit of a lockeroom cancer and saying all the same thing we Sabres fans said when we first traded for him. How quickly things change, and it's only a matter of time until they are saying the same thing. I think i read one poster say that they kept the wrong goalie, but that was about it.

And when he did that, Skinner was farther from the puck than Evander Kane. Skinner easily beats him to the puck, and while he's handling it to deke the goalie and put it in the net, Kane isn't even close enough to him to bother him from behind.

Karlsson stays with Dahlin. Karlsson stands by the left post and watches helplessly as that goal goes in, and his body language is comical.

Maybe Kane was in awe of seeing a full arena of cheering Sabres fans and that distracted him...or he was being lazy

    2.  This is true, but the one forward that seems to be especially good at it is Casey Mittelstadt.  It's just shocking to me that he'll be part of an offensive rush that turns the puck over, and he's suddenly back there with the defensemen snuffing out the opposing rush.  It's amazing to me that such a green player is so defensively aware.  His momma dun raised him right.

    3.  From a skill standpoint, I have to agree.  There have been some luckier goals, but that was the best skill goal.

    4.  Try to go over to the Blues forum and tell them that  ?

    5.  Larsson and Girgs are in roles where they can succeed.  They're possibly capable of more if they needed to be (both were thrust to the top line at times during the tank), but playing where they are is just perfect for the way the team is composed.

i actually was reading in their RoR trade topic and saw your very reasonable points and their very un-reasonable answers. While I agree with them in that RoR was the best player in the trade, I do not believe we lost the trade at all, both teams got what they wanted.

I have not read all the thread, but here and there I have noticed that Skinner is getting big points for the nifty moves he made on the GWG, which they were.

What lead directly to him being able to make those fancy moves was the fact that he out hustled, none other than, Evander Kane to a loose puck in the slot.

I would like to add onto that, Dahlin's behind the back pass around EK that made Jones come out to try and play it was pretty amazing too.

Another photo of me and my friend at the same cafe in Sarajevo.

Unfortunately, he passed away rather suddenly and unexpectedly a few years ago.  He was a coppersmith and learned the trade from his father, who had from his father ... back down the line to the time of the Ottoman Turks.

    post-3401-0-51983400-1372076703_thumb.jpg

Don't know why my photos are so small.

seeing your photos and reading your story makes me wish i had some more culture in my life and i wish i had more time to travel. i have had a few opportunities to be overseas but it has been for work, and there wasn't much time for much else. My wife and i have had a trip to London but that's really it. i would love to visit more places and experience local cultures.

Sorry I wasn't able to post last night -- had to run home and go right to sleep.

Some observations from the 100 level last night:

    - The only players that had "good" games last night from my point of view were Risto, Hutton and Thompson. Everyone else was mostly solid but had some moments of bad. That was truly a *team* win last night.

    - Risto doesn't care what anybody thinks, he's going to play his game. And that game doesn't look the same every night. It's different some nights from others and that's fine. He's versatile. Some nights there's a lot left to be desired still, but he's proving many of us wrong.

    - I think I figured something out with Thompson last night: nobody is waiting for or expecting him to make some of the plays he does. There were a couple moments where he made a smooth play only to have his pass easily picked off or left in no-man's land. I don't think his teammates quite know what he's capable of yet or don't trust him enough to be in position to pick up on those moments. It's a growing pain. He's also huge so nobody expects him to do what he does on the opposing team either which is a big advantage.

    - Eichel had SEVERAL lazy moments last night. He didn't really seem to have the want that you hope at times but he was still good even so. That's why he is frustrating at times. Several turnovers where he wasn't protecting the puck. He's still great.

    - Beaulieu legit looked terrible until his goal. That definitely gave him some energy and he stepped up a bit after.

    - Erik Karlsson looked bad. Something seems off. He was invisible for most of the game then had a couple bad, dumb plays. He also didn't seem to mingle with teammates... at all. Maybe the marriage in SJ won't last long.

Thanks for the update. What we have to love about this team is that even when they're not all on their "A" game, they still find a way to win.

I defintely saw the several lazy moments and giveaways by Eichel, but, i think his play thorugh most of the game was fine. there were some points where my wife and i wanted him to shoot, but he's looking for that perfect tic tac toe pass play to setup someone elses goal. I want him to be a tad more selfish.

Risto spanking Burns like a puppy was amazing on that goal, he needs work on that celebration though. Skinner's post game comments were pretty funny about it.

Erod needs a game or two in the box, he took what, 2 bad penalties that were just plain dumb?

one other observation, after Skinner scored he blew by the whole team and skated right to Eichel to celebrate. Hope their man crush on each other makes Skinner want to stay here

I absolutely hate 2-0 leads, I'm just starting to shake years of ingrained "because buffalo"

    This is awesome!

Someone on Twitter said: "everyone last year kept waiting for Vegas to get cold. Starting to believe we can be this year's Vegas."

These guys are good, scary good. -chills

I think it was Dreger, "Last year we waited for the wheels to fall off the Vegas wagon and it never did, why can't that be Buffalo this year?" Cue the Leafs fans to start murmuring about how we only seem to win 1 goal games in OT and that isn't sustainable

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words.  So, a video must be worth a thousand pictures ...

This video was filmed (not by me) in a small cafe in Sarajevo.  I know the city and the cafe very well.  Fond memories for sure.

There is a knack to getting used to making it and it is easier on a gas stove than electric, but it can be done.

This is a single coffee serving.  I make mine in a pot that is 7 times bigger than the one in the video ... family size ... just for me.

thank you for posting, i am going to try this on the weekend. i have a gas stove so that'l work nicely. cant wait to try it. is there a particular brand that you like to use as far as coffee goes?

This is my favourite time of day ... it is just about 7:00 AM here in Halifax.

I just prayed the dawn prayers and some extra.  The crows are flying by on their return to their daylight stomping grounds from their nighttime roosting grounds.  They are fasinating birds.  Several thousand go to a University grounds near us to roost at night. during the winter months  They then return each day to their daytime homes.

I am about to enjoy my Lavaza Espresso coffee made in the Bosnian tradition.  I can use any coffee to make it, but Turkish and / or Bosnian have the perfect grind and flavour.  I do like this Espresso a lot, though.

I am a little bit of a coffee snob, my wife and I bought a Nespresso Espresso machine last year as an 'us' gift. It has made it difficult to go back to regular coffee. I have had some amazing coffee in Qatar at a Turkish restaurant, great coffee in Germany and especially Holland, but back here in the states i have found that coffee just isn't as good and generally just stick with espresso these days.

sorry fo the long winded NS, but, I am curious, what is the Bosnian traditional way of brewing coffee? I am always looking to try something new.

3.5 million retained? Yea, I'd do that deal.

Kane replaces Reinhart as a RW'er, Pilut in for Scandella, Smith and the SJ 1st I could live with for a 7 mil a season Kane ?

We all know Kane is one helluva player, but he is 30. how many 70+ point seasons does he have left? the first time he dips below 70 points, that $10.6M salary will be rough. I'd be torn if this were a real thing.

Most interesting piece of memorabilia I have is a signed baseball with Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, and a whole bunch of other NY Yankees.  I tried to date it based on signatures, but it doesn't match any of the NY Yankee rosters; the closest are the 1930-1931 rosters.  My thought is that it might have been from game that included late season call-ups, or possibly a spring training game.  The whole ball is covered in signatures though.

My dad had it, but he never spoke of it.  I got it when he passed away, and my mom knew nothing of its origins.

The timing of the signatures could be from my dad's first MLB game (he was born in 1930, so maybe?) or maybe he acquired it much later.  Not sure, and I'll never know.

wow, that's pretty amazing. maybe take it to an appraiser and they might be able to tell you the year and authenticate it. again, what an incredible piece of sports history that is.

If they start scoring with consistency. So far it's been Skinner and Eichel bailing out the team for ties or starter goals for the most part. We have to have a larger contribution from that 2nd line. It's invisible for most games most nights to date. Not that they don't contribute, but they don't contribute enough to take pressure off our 1st line nearly enough.

I do agree mostly, however, i think that you're missing the fact that depth has been coming form different players/lines in different games, while not consistantly the 2nd line, secondary scoring has been decent from everywhere.

i read the following this morning and it sums things up nicely IMO

"Although Skinner and Eichel have been the driving forces up front for Buffalo, with the former scoring nine goals during this nine-game win streak and the latter adding a goal and 10 assists, there have been contributions from up and down the lineup. In Montreal it was secondary scoring from Vladimir Sobotka and his line. Against Vancouver it was Reinhart setting up Skinner then potting the game-tying goal all with less than three minutes remaining in the third period. In Minnesota it was defensemen Jake McCabe and Rasmus Dahlin pulling the Sabres out of a two-goal deficit and against Philadelphia it was a blitzkrieg of secondary scoring from Tage Thompson, Evan Rodrigues and Johan Larsson that helped stake Buffalo to a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes."

They are definitely playoff bound. I thought .500/playoff bubble team, but this run has me believing wild card spot at the very least.

That being said, Botts is going to have to address the 2nd scoring line situation, regardless of playoffs or not. It's not contributing nearly enough to maintain sustainable help for the 1st line. I mean, it's great and all that Skinner is taking off and we've found one of Jacks future wingers, but pressure must be taken off of that line to some extent with help from the 2nd scoring line. Reinhart, Middlestadt, Okposo just aren't getting it done with consistent basis.

A trade, a call up, doesn't matter the solution, that line has to contribute more than it has.

Yeah once the Sheary-Mittelstadt-Okposo line starts scoring, we will be in for an even bigger treat.

Definitely a bit of mix between luck and good. I am still worried about how top heavy our scoring is. We're getting a lot of points from our defense man though, and we have finally started to see some more scoring from guys on the other lines. We're not as balanced as the post lockout years where we had nearly 5-7 guys with around 20 goals.

My guess is we'll have a few 10+ goal guys, and maybe only 2-3 with 20+. Both Eichel and Reinhardt's goals are down (although Eichel's still racking up the points).  Pommers has 9, but his production has tapered off, and he's not playing with Eichel and Skinner as much now. Okposo and Sheary have both done it in the past too.

For the Detroit game, I had their coverage and they were talking about our balanced scoring, but I don't really buy that looking at the numbers. During the winning streak though it has been different guys coming up big. So maybe that's what they meant.

We are starting to see some secondary scoring, Thompson starting to gain confidence and has scored some goals. I'd like to see the Sheary-Mittelstadt-Ok line start getting back on the score sheet. I think it's only a matter of time before Mittelstadt starts feeling it more and that line gets going. It's crazy that Eichel-Skinner can't be stopped, every team knows they're our biggest threat and yet they keep getting goals. It will be amazing when Mittelstadt's line gets going too.

  18. 55 minutes ago, SabresBaltimore said:

I expected they'd be better this year, but not this much better. There is still a lot of season yet to play, but it's certainly trending in the right direction. A lot will depend on how the rest of this season goes and more importantly the offseason. Last offseason worked out really for us. We need another like that.

At the top of last offseason, you've got the Skinner and Hutton moves. Of course the Skinner move will require a fat check this offseason. I'd like to see JBots lock him down before then. I feel like Skinner is more than happy playing here (he did waive his NTC to come here too), but will he take a discount to stay and/or be willing to sign before testing the market with the season he's having? I'm not sure if we have enough cap space for what Skinner will warrant the way his season is going  though. And will he keep up the production after signing a new deal?

Pommers is in the last year of his deal (hopefully we can sign him to a much cheaper 1-2 year deal) and I think Molson also rolls off? I'm not sure if Molson is counting against our cap or what. There is 1 more year of Bagosions deal. And of course all that money we're wasting on Okposo right now. I like the guy and feel bad for all his health issues, but he's not earning his paycheck right now. He's making more than Skinner.

We need to resign Mccabe too though. And he's due for a huge payraise over what he's getting right now. He makes less than Beaulieu somehow. They should bump him early with the way he's been playing.

Edit: I didn't notice Ullmark is due for a new contract too. With Hutton playing so well, we need to decide what to do with him. Can we keep him in a backup roll for another 1-2 seasons? He's playing well in that role, but is he a starter in this league? Will he want to leave to go elsewhere as a possible starter? It helps that he's  a Restricted Free agent. Would another team make a bid for him though?

I'm also starting to change my mind about Tage Thompson. I wasn't happy about his acquisition, or even him playing instead of Rodriguez. However, he's been a lot more visible out there when he's playing lately. Scoring a few goals in the last few games doesn't hurt either. We'll see if he can keep it up going forward though.

I was also a bit skeptical about Middelstat playing in the NHL this season. I felt like JBots signed him just so he wouldn't walk away from the team completely. I wanted him to spend some time in Rochester playing big minutes. He seemed small and underdeveloped, but he seems to be coming on as the season goes on. He still needs to bulk up a lot though. Then again Jack was pretty small his first year and has bulked up quite a bit.

Overall I'm ecstatic with where the team is right now, and hopeful toward the future, but we'll see where we are next season.

I agree, i figured that there would be some improvement, but i didn't expect this. My friend and i were discussing if they are actually this good or they have been lucky. We came up with a little bit of both. Eichel and Skinner of course are dominating and we are starting to see some more secondary scoring. However, you dont win 9 in a row without some 'puck luck' either. I am more than happy with it of course and just dont see too many stinkers or extended losing streaks, Eichel is feeling it and i think the rest of the team is feeding of him.

You're right, Skinner waived to come here and i believe he told Carolina that Buffalo was the only team he'd waive. He's all smiles on the ice too, so you'd think he'd re-sign here in a heart beat, but, he's having a career year for goals and as long as he's pumping the net, then he might have a desire to test UFA and see the ridiculous offers he will receive.

Pommer on a 1 year deal at like half his current salary would be nice, but, he's 3rd on the team in points, will he take such a discount?

I think McCabe has earned a nice contract with his play this year, but, he's not going to be more than a 2nd pair D-man in Buffalo and hopefully gets paid as such.

Ullmark is what 5-0-1 so far? He pretty much stole that Detroit game, he had some incredible saves, I don't see how we can let him go, we put so much time and effort in developing him properly that i can't imagine trading him for some futures. I think we can get him signed reasonably.

Jury is still out on Tage, but, he's building confidence now, that PP goal was crazy, looked like an Ovechkin slapper from that faceoff circle, I don't think Howard saw the puck, only heard it whizz by. His shootout goal was crazy because he looked lazy coming in and then deked Howard out of his shorts.

Mittelstadt, it was necessary to have him up here after the RoR trade, we had to have anpother skilled center. He started off slow, wasn't great offensively but wasn't a liability defensively either, i think he's doing fine, but yes, you are correct, he needs to add 15lbs before next season.
