They suggest the Sabres should be in on this trade. The ask, 2023 1st, Ryan Johnson and Rasmus Asplund.  The AAV is bigger than Chychrun, but not that much more.  Risk is the 7 years remaining and taking him until he is 36, but the cost (if accurate) is much less for what could be a more stabilizing force for a guy like Power, than Chychrun.

Parayko is low - #30 on TSN trade bait.

Don't understand how people give value to a college player about to be a UFA in a month.  Johnson has very little trade value,  if any.

    In this case multiple GMs.

Skinner was brought  in by JBot, who also signed him to that big and questionable contract.
Tage was brought in by JBot, who had no plan on how to develop him.
Tuch was a key piece in the Eichel trade, brought in by Adams.

Adam’s knew how to develop Tage but it is Granato that gets the most credit.  Granato put them together and switched Tage to center, he rehabilitated Skinner, and he helped make Tuch reach new heights.

Granato seems to know how to bring out the most in players.

He certainly does. It's pretty remarkable to see almost every player/prospect improve under Granato.  You just have to expect Quinn, JJ and Krebs to continue to improve. It's nothing short of incredible what Granato has done with this roster.

The Sabres are taking some gambles on these deals, but they are worthy gambles.  You need to identify the young talent with leadership skills early on and get them locked up.  Not doing so cost them guys like Reinhart and Ullmark.  They will swing and miss on some of these deals, but if they hit on most of them (and so far Thompson and Samuelsson look like hits, and Cozens, in my opinion, will be a hit) the team will be in great shape for the foreseeable future.

To add, they did a "bridge" deal with Dahlin and, in hindsight, a longer-term deal would have been the better route.  They need to get him extended again sooner than later.  He's thriving under the current regime and if his recent open letter is to be believed, he wants to be in Buffalo.

This is one of the better takes on the deal. It's a gamble, but likely a smart gamble. It is odd to reward someone with such a deal after a half season of high level play, but that's how the game is today. It will be a great deal if Cozens continues to improve and that's likely under Granato.

I think by cap hit/contact similarity, 3rd line wingers.

VO 4.75 through next season UFA; Beauvillier 4.15 through next season UFA. VO obviously provides more goals.

Aha. Yes, remove VO's hot streak and he'd look quite similar stat-wise.

Yep, take away a bunch of his goals and he'll have a lot fewer goals.

These are the reactions I was expecting.  I don’t want to give up these assets either but these fairy tale proposals where we just offer assets we don’t really care about (ie. Mittlestadt, Olofsson, Östlund, draft picks down the road, Rosen) are mind numbing.  At least one of the things going to SJ will hurt.  Whether it’s Quinn, Peterka, this years 1st, Kulich, or Savoie. One of them has to be included unless the SJ GM is a puddle of poo.

I agree on the fairy tale proposals. I would expect to give up at least 1 top prospect in return, my only caveat would be to agree to an extension beforehand. Not trading top prospects for a rental.

If I’m SJ, I’m asking for this years 1st, Jack Quinn and Juri Kulich

The only way for the sabres to consider that offer is if we can agree to a contract during trade negotiations. Can't give up that much for a rental. Getting Meier would be a tremendous acquisition.

And that's fair. Meier is just 26 and one of the league's best power forwards.

The qualifying offer doesn't mean he's getting that much on term, but no one is trading the likes of Quinn for him without knowing what his demands are and whether they fit in your cap.

The Sabres have set themselves up as one of the few franchises to be in a position to acquire a player of Meier's calibre and circumstances this summer.

He could be our Hossa. I'm not interested in breaking the bank, but I would hope Adams is taking a hard look.

Hossa was one of my all time fav players. I think Meier is a tremendous forward and would love to see a trade for him.

Not sure how the past few games have affected this, but lesS than a week ago he was on a run of 6 points in his past 12 games, while leading the team in Corsi and only being on for 2 goals against.

he's got 9 points in 34 games, -3.  Aside from a few glimpses a few weeks ago, He's not very effective.

Krebs needs to stay up and play.... he has been playing well. Thats a huge stupid thing to do unless he is just being moved back tomorrow

He's got, what, 2 assists in his last 12 games?  I think we need quite a bit more out of him. He's not very effective right now.

Donnie started out his tenure talking about how talented these kids were and how much they cared about each other when there wasn’t a lot of evidence to support it. We found out he was right.

Donnie talked about how he wasn’t going to teach these guys how to play safe, he was going to teach these guys offence. We are now the most explosive team in hockey.

Donnie has more recently been talking a lot about not focusing on what could or has gone wrong and fighting to not lose, but focusing on what you can do right in order to help the team win. Three blown leads tied up late and won in overtime, against 3 of the hottest teams in the NHL.

The guy walks the talk more than any coach I can remember.

This team is reflection of its leader.

I had always hoped that most teams would take this approach. The ownership owes it to the league and fans to put on the most entertaining team possible with winning always being the ultimate goal.  KA and Granato have done that.

Quinn and Peterka with about 9 min of toi last night.

That's about all they deserve lately. Both in a big slump.

Doubt he expects Chychrun would play in place of either, but at what he'd cost to bring in they'd have to be expecting to play him ~20 minutes/night IF he were brought in.  8 of those minutes would be coming at somebody's expense besides Bryson when all are healthy.

Maybe I read the posters comment wrong, but he questioned if Adams, not Granato, would sit either Dahlin or Power, which implies benching, not just knocking a couple minutes off.  It's an odd comment.

    1. Sabres over the delucca 500 at this point of the season has been awhile
    2. I don't understand the Mitts hate, is he an all star, no but he does play a 3rd-4th line role and is on pace for a 47 point season and the coaching and management staff seem to still have faith in him
    3. Do Dahlin and Thompson both get selected to the all star game and if just one who goes to the game
    4. Where do you rank the Tuch-Skinner-Thompson line in the division
    5. I'm missing the fascination with a Chychrun trade, he's more of an offensive Dman, do you really see KA sitting Power or Dahlin for him??
    6. January's results should give us a real idea for the playoff chances of this team, a big month and they're in it, a .500 month and we're out IMO
    7. GK although not great is keeping us in games. UPL is making the big saves especially on breakaways
    8. The Bruins game will give us a real feel for where we're at
    9. Cozens having a breakout year and is covering for Quinn and JJP rookie errors so far
    10. Making KO the captain was the correct move and you just can't complain about the hustle Girgs provides
    11. Rack up Jost for another good pickup by KA and Krebs plays better with the vets guidance.

Do you honestly think Chychrun would be in the lineup at the expense of Dahlin or Power? Seriously?

I guess I need help understanding why he is better in Buffalo than in Rochester.

Is it in his head, is it the coaching, or something else?

Logic would say send UPL back down and let him play more but his performance in Rochester has been mediocre.

Perhaps staying up and being with Anderson and the Sabres coaching staff is better for his development?

Better coaching and team around him? Maybe just natural progression in playing with top level players. He's forced to get better quickly and maybe that's happening.

Because other cities deserve a hockey team that fans would  Actually show up.

You want to grow the NHL sport not destroy it and make it a laughing stock but that's just me.

They'll show up when the new arena is built. Don't let it bother you so much.

The NHL isn't getting destroyed in anyway.  Everything I've heard is that the atmosphere at the games is tremendous, the ice is the best in the league and it'll only get better when the arena is built. The team has been stockpiling draft picks and could be a very competitive team soon. Despite the past, the future looks great.

Fascinating that even though they dropped to a capacity of some 5000 fans, by raising ticket prices their ticket revenue is actually up 50% over what it was last season!

But sad to read that Buffalo was last in attendance. How much our culture has changed. When I was a young teenager in the early to mid 70s, being able to attend a Sabres game was like winning a lottery. Every game was a standing room only sell out! I remember the first game I attended vs the Broad Street bullies, and getting to watch the French Connection. Martin scored a great goal right in front of our seats. We won and Schoenfeld totally roughed up Schultz that game.

I also remember the Sabres had an open practice every year over the holidays and we would attend those. And it was thrilling. Filled the arena!

I think they also are selling all the tickets as opposed to promos and giveaways. I've often gone to games here with comped tickets.

A Hasek-led Sabres team hanging on to a 2-1 lead in the third period and letting Hasek save their bacon was among the most fun hockey to watch ever. Stomach-twisting, but fun and exhilarating.

I agree, but overall, hockey should be entertaining, fast paced... , so if you don't have Hasek or you're just watching a game without the Sabres, you want action.

It does? OK I guess.  Not for me. I'm not saying he is bad, good, great, someone I like or you like.  All I'm saying is he is not the elite scorer many wanted him to be.

After all, you know what means more than him being 'arguably' the best player on a good team in the West?  Years and Years of stats where he was on good teams, bad teams, awful teams, below average teams, playing full seasons, partial seasons, playing hurt, playing totally healthy...etc.  I'll take my 'stats' supporting a point about where he ranks as an offensive force in the league compared to any other forward...over how good of an 'overall' player he is based on less than 30 games in one particular season.

Yes , I think being in first place is better than being in 7th and have a lot of great stats. Having said that, I think the Sabres are on the right path and I'm excited about the potential, but ultimately wins are more important.
