He was trying to recover from concussions as the post-concussion meds that almost killed him.

He played every season he was with the team.  I know he went through a lot,  but he was in the room every year when he built his reputation as a leader.

Not sure what you're asking. Are you suggesting Okposo take the players with the bad attitude and cliquey mindset out behind the arena and learn them a good one?

My point was,  I'd he's such a strong leader, why the alleged problems in the locker room before? He's getting credit for a good locker room when it's good,  but no blame when it's bad.

Going to quote myself from earlier. I think a lot of us called this in some manner or other.

"There is absolutely no dismissing how important it is to have that atmosphere in there and my impression is that it took not only Meatballs doing his thing, KA cleaning house of the locker room cancers, but also KO putting his foot down and showing the way.

Is that worth giving the guy a shot at a final season of a glorious playoff run for ~$2.5mil for the year? I think so. I think KO has more to teach these guys and he can help make sure there are no embers of locker rooms past. If we carry two goalies there's room for him on the roster and still add a solid player to the third line."

I like KO, but if he was so good in the locker oom, why didn't he do anything about the alleged cancers in the room?  I personally think the cancer claim in BS, the whole organization was a large tumor.  This is probably an ok signing. Adding too many rookies next season doesn't seem like a good idea. Too much inconsistency.

We still need goaltending, that's all I'm concerned with right now.

The Fiesta Mall Site is interesting as this is the area where not only most of the premium season ticket holders are, the Mesa City Council released a statement supporting the idea and it may not require a public vote to be approved.

Not having to remove a landfill would also knock a year off the project, which would be a good thing.  I hope it happens, but I'm losing faith.

The writing was on the wall with the Braves with the McAdoo trade.  I am looking for something similar with Arizona.

I don't think so.  John Y Brown had a strategy to lose fan interest to make the move 'easy'.

I don't see a benefit to tanking,  it wouldn't change the situation and the management team would likely want to stay with the team after any possible move.

And they have a great pipeline of prospects and a ton of draft picks.

They're a year or 2 behind the Sabres in their rebuild.

Was the referendum just for Tempe voters, Tempe and Phoenix voters, or statewide?

Stinks that it didn't pass.  Hope you guys can get something worked out with the Suns owner.  Really hate seeing any fanbase lose its team.  Cuts way too close to where we've feared we've been at in Buffalo with the Bills and possibly even the Sabres back at the bankruptcy filing.  And even more so with the Braves and Stallions and Destroyers leaving town.  (Pretty sure the Stampede and Lizzard were going to go away regardless as both their leagues seemed to be on very precarious ground when they left.  NPSL actually did fold when the Lizzard folded, but tried to revive the old MISL before finally giving up the ghost a few years later.)

Just hate seeing any fanbase lose its team.

    It was just Tempe voters.

I remember the Braves moving,  this isn't the same , but it still blows.

    Hmm.

    Oh.

My geography is terrible and I'm not going to prop myself up with Google. Has Arizona State managed to establish a real NCAA program out there? Or does ASU have nothing to do with the area we're talking about.

ASU went Div I a few years back. Appeared in the tournament as well. It's a pretty solid program. Lot of European players on the team.

This is just strange. I’ve never been to Tempe, but areas around airports are usually wastelands due to the plane traffic. What else do they want to do with this land? Plus, it looks like this was going to almost completely privately funded. I guess they don’t want nice things. Sounds like it was really a referendum on how popular hockey is in the desert.

Tempe is actually a fun city.  ASU  and the nightlife surrounding it is wild.  Lots to do around there.  It makes no sense to have voted this down.

Also makes no sense to me to have a public vote when it's a private transaction. No govt funding,  privately financed.

I'm pretty bummed about this.  I loved going to games here after many years as a Sabres season ticket holder.

I wonder about the impact on the hockey programs here.  Youth hockey growth in Phoenix was one of the best in the nation. My boys grew up playing hockey.  It was very well organized.

Really sucks for hockey fans here and there are plenty of them.  It's just been mismanaged from day 1. Wrong place to play,  poor ownership,  just never got anyone on the same page.

We actually outdrew the Sabres and Sens on 2021-22. We just needed about 3000 more per game and probably would have achieved that with the new arena.

Eichel wanted out even before he was hurt. And when the KA took over he made it clear that he wanted players on his team who wanted to be here and be part of the rebuild. So the decision to trade Eichel was not a difficult decision for the GM to make. In fact, the GM told the player to stay home and not come back. The issue came down to getting an acceptable return. In my view, he got it.

As you seem to be pointing out, the Eichel deal worked out well for both teams. And I would also say the same thing about the Reinhart deal. It worked out well for Florida and Buffalo. If Levi becomes our primary goaltender, that deal could turn out to be the most consequential of the deals from trading away our old core. Looking back, if I had the choice of keeping one player who was dealt, it would be Montour.

Montour would flourish under Granato.  He looked good when Granato took over.

My feeling is the Sabres, Kevyn specifically, leveraged the neck injury to move Eichel out.  Even if Eichel was "right" (whatever that means in what might have been a very complex situation) I can still see why Adams wanted to move on from a core that to date had not brought any success.  He felt more comfortable leveraging key pieces of that core in their prime to bring in the kinds of players he wanted.  He attempted to flip the frustrated Tankfruit for good vibes, and spread the talent more deeply through the lineup.  I'd say he was successful.

    What was?

I think Eichel wanted out before the injury,  but not 100% certain.

Jury still out on whether this was successful or not.  Certainly looks promising.  Tuch is great,  the rest of the players TBD.  Vegas obviously did very well.

I honestly hope someday we can get a guy who needed a change of scenery to be great. Perhaps we do already with Tuch.....

Eichel's success infuriates me, but I also honestly think the drama and the new scenery made him grow up. You can just see how much more mature he looks game to game; he doesn't mope around or look disinterested every other shift. It effectively makes me unsure how to see him going forward in the playoffs. Essentially I know that he'd of likely never achieved this maturity with Buffalo regardless of if we got better with him or not. Unlike when ROR left for St.L, I genuinely think present Eichel was never in the cards here as he is growing up finally. I think last season finally humbled him and the many vets on the team effectively put him in his place.

He was mature enough here and his game was very good.

Just because he wanted out, who could blame him,  doesn't make him immature and he wasn't moping.

People make it out that he wasn't a good Sabre and try to make him look bad because he got sick of the organization,  but he was an excellent and still hasn't hit his prime yet.

It also appears that he was correct about his neck surgery and the Sabres were not.

When Marner signed his contract in 2019, He became the 3rd highest player in the league   Was this a good contract to give out? Was he anywhere near that level then? How about now ?

They made Mathew’s the 2nd highest paid player in the league in 2019 and then signed Tavares who was slow at 28, knowing the back half of the contract would be an anchor

Both Matthews and Marner were coming off their ELCs
Dahlin coming off his bridge  big difference

they also will have paid 3 guys over $11million

Sabres have yet to pay anyone that amount

Not 11 million yet. Dahlin will be close. But it's still big dollar, long term contracts to players that haven't won anything. I don't see a huge difference between the 2 teams in that aspect.  Plus, the Leafs are a very solid team overall, they lost to 2 time Stanley cup champs Tampa the preview couple years, lost to last seasons presidents cup team that had their goalie play out of his mind.

I would say there is a big difference between $11 million and $7million

He’s trying to do some serious math gymnastics

There is a $4 million dollar difference. Skinner gets $9 million, not 7. Dahlin will get closer to 11 than 7.

Still handing out big money , long term contracts to players that haven't won anything yet. You're ok with the Sabres doing what you criticize the Leafs for doing.

Are you comparing the $49 million they gave Matthews Marner Tavares Nylander Reilly (59% of today’s cap)

to the ~$40 million the Sabres gave (will give) Tuch Thompson Cozens Samuelsson Power Dahlin? (~40% of the cap in a few years)?

Seems like the Sabres have a wider base and a wider margin for error.

I'm comparing the concept of paying players big money before they have one anything. Actually, I'm not comparing anything. I'm asking the poster a question.

Yep always look like champions in sept

biggest mistake they made was paying Marner and Matthews before they won anything    Or maybe it was brining in PJ boy, knowing it reduced their window of opportunity from 8 years to 3 or 4?

What are your thoughts on all the long term deals the sabres have and will be paying out , and we haven't even made the playoffs since I can't remember when.

I haven't seen someone so young look so good in a long time, including Dahlin. Smart and steady like a vet, size, athleticism, and skill out the wazoo that will only get more refined with time. I hope they sign him to a very long contract, and I don't care what it costs.

Tyler Myers had a tremendous rookie season, one of the best in my memory. Things don't always work out great in the long run.

If Skinner gets to 500 goals and gets in the HOF, you can not deny his consistence of being very very good to better than very very good and that is why I think he will get in. The consistency has to count for something. Different sport I know but look at Don Mattingly, he dominated for years but ultimately didnt have the consistency to get to the HOF.

Mattingly injured his back and that sapped his power and quickness. It wasn't really inconsistency, it was injuries.
