Casey’s bonehead play against St Louis is still bugging me.  As soon as I saw the bad pass I knew it would cost us the game.  I also was annoyed that Granato failed to pull the goalie earlier when we had them hemmed in their zone with two minutes left.

These are the types of errors that good teams with good coaches don’t make.  So I ask when do we stop making those mistakes.  Why didn’t Casey just send the puck in deep in a tie game?  Why wasn’t DG aggressive when the team has nothing to lose?

Obviously personnel remains an issue.  We are fielding the worst line in hockey each night.  Our defense outside of Dahlin and Jokiharju is either young or exceedingly mediocre.  The goaltending remains bad.

Despite these handicaps we are in most games most nights.  When do the lights go on and we start winning those close games?  Is Granato part of the problem or is this mostly a roster issue?  Does he know NHL skills but not NHL strategy? Is his and KA’s attitude that wins and losses don’t matter right now part of the problem as well? Do we not have the right vets here to teach the kids to win like Drury did?

It's the GM's job to field a quality roster , it's the coaches job to get the maximum production from that roster. We still need Adams to get the roster fixed before we look at the coach.  We all knew this team couldn't win with our goaltending, no surprise there.

Hey, now.  Let's not overdramatize things.  It was FOUR first round picks....And most of those were at the top of the draft.  One was our old friend Taylor Hall, who ended up a Sabre anyway and was a huge success with the team.

    https://oilersnation.com/2020/07/09/throwback-thursday-this-week-in-2007-the-edmonton-oilers-signed-thomas-vanek-to-a-seven-year-offer-sheet/

"Here’s the four players that Edmonton drafted with the picks they would’ve given up: Sam Gagner in 2007, Magnus Paajarvi in 2009 and Taylor Hall in 2010. The 2008 pick was used in a later offer sheet for Dustin Penner."

Is that accurate? I thought it was every other year, not consecutive years.

I don't like this plan at all.  What do they have to gain from it (as I write this question I realize this is about money most likely rather than showcasing each countries talent).

So they'll play a WJC tournament in August and then again at the traditional time in December?  I'm a big believer in the WJC when it goes forward in December / January.  I would have liked it if they could have found a way to play it before the NHL draft for the eligible top prospects.  Doesn't seem right to me.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. In my mind, this is the best, most exciting hockey tournament each year. For the players, it's the equivalent of the Olympics. This is likely as much for the experience as anything else.

It may take another three years of player development and experience but could the Sabres be "the Team" come 2025??  Listed major players on roster and not JAG's who could be filled by veterans.

    Stamkos- Thompson is closest comparable

Kucherov- Mitts and Quinn (neither will be as good, but combined could come close)

    Point- Krebs

    Killorn- Tuch

    Palat- Skinner

    Cirelli- Cozens

    Hedman- Dahlin

    McDonagh- Joker

    Sergachev-Power

    Cernak- Samuelsson

    Vasi- UPL/ Levi/ Portillo

    Gourde- Paterka

I purposely left Olofsson off because I don't think he will be around in a few years.  I also have no idea about future picks who could be our young prospects in a few years.

How are Stamkos and Tage comparable? Stamkos had 50 goals in his 2nd season, will be first ballot hall of famer. I like Tage but there is no comparison.

The Sabres had lost 5 straight (and Anderson and Olofsson) on their West Coast road trip when Edmonton came to Buffalo. Edmonton was white-hot with a 10-2 record coming into the game and Draisaitl and McDavid were vying for the scoring title and all the MVP talk (as well as Ovechkin's early season goal run).

Cozens 2 goals, 0 assists. He, Caggiula, and Hinostroza were matched against McDavid's line all night as a defensive speed line. Cozens won the matchup all game long. (McDavid did get an assist on the power play.)

Since that game, Edmonton is 8-9 overall.

Heck, you could say... Cozens broke McDavid. You'd probably be wrong, but you could say it.

Edit: Zegras and Anaheim lost a 6-5 game to Edmonton so far this year. Zegras 0-1-1, -1 and 4 shots. Cozens wins!

Wonder if Edmonton would do McDavid for Cozens straight up?

No it’s business commentary.  This company was once twice the size it is today.  It’s revenue has been mostly flat for a decade.

after the transition to digital that all publications went through, the Times revenue has been increasing steadily over the the last few years and looks like it's past year has been a larger revenue increase than it's most recent years.

First name that popped in my head was Paul Terbenche (sic?) but I like Gates Orlando.

I met Terbenche's son at work last year. He's a sales rep and I noticed his name on some emails. Asked him if Paul was his father. He came in the next day with some hockey cards and other stuff. Had a real nice talk about the early days of the Sabres.  I brought in my own Terbenche card. Was pretty cool.

There is a plausible explanation why the Sabres are losing a majority of its games. It's not a mystery. Most of the teams we are playing are more talented than this rebuilding team. A person can be a devoted Sabre fan and still recognize that uncomfortable truth. You don't have to be analytical wiz to recognize that. All you have to have is a penny's worth of objectivity  when watching the games. Right now, the Sabres don't have enough talent to be a serious team. It may an uncomfortable fact to acknowledge but it is an obvious reality.

Who won't acknowledge we don't have the talent? I think that's obvious to everyone. Nothing to do with my post.

There is a demonstrable difference in the play under Krueger than under Granato. Should there be a celebration in the better play under the replacement coach? No. But there is nothing wrong in acknowledging the reality that a less talented team consistently has kept up against more talented team which didn't happen at the end of the prior coach's tenure. And as you stated it was exceptional goaltending by a young goalie that many people are unsure of that played at a high level and kept us in the game. That should be a reason for positivity. And it shouldn't be surprising that the team with more firepower outshot the team with less talented offensive players.

I have no issue with being positive about the play of UPL, my whole issue is the ' hard working' praise. It's unnecessary.  But we are still losing the vast majority of our games and we have the 5 fewest points in the league.
