The years we missed the playoffs before The Tank:

    1970-1, 1971-2, 1973-4 1985-6, 1986-7, 1995-6, 2001-2, 2002-3, 2003-4, 2007-8, 2008-9.

We have DOUBLED our playoff misses since Darcy allowed losing to become acceptable in 2011-2.  Then we tried to lose for a few years and then losing became a bad habit like smoking.

Darcy was our most successful GM since Punch.  To single him out for the teams failures is ridiculous. To say he allowed losing to be acceptable is an absurd statement. We never had consistent, high expectations and results with any other GM.  He told it to us straight, Golisano wasn't going to spend what was needed for a quick fix, he knew that and he said that. Not his fault.

Given the totality of the circumstances, the 2 issues of VO’s next contract vs acquiring a goaltender are separate issues

    1) The Sabres are 23rd in goals for.  Can we really afford to let one of our premiere goal scorers go?

    2) The Sabres are approx $18 under the cap floor with surprisingly few job openings.  VO’s next contract will go along way toward helping us get to the floor.

    3) The Sabres have other assets to use to get the goaltending including 3 1sts this year, 3 2nds next year, and a boatload of cap space to help other teams get under the cap.  KA said at the deadline that he was willing to weaponize the cap space.  I don’t see the attitude changing in the off-season.

    4) KA’s pronouncement that he only wants guys that wants to be here, isn’t lip service.  The recent article about Asplund and VO’s bonding in Rochester and being key pieces of the of fun and family atmosphere in the locker room reinforced the idea that KA would bring back VO to keep his scoring and maintain the building culture.

Nothing precludes KA from trading VO in the right deal, but it would have to be a huge offer.  Also he has been pretty clear that he wants to acquire a top flight RHD to partner with Power and mentor the young D group. 19 teams are either at this years cap ceiling or over the cap using LTIR to stay complaint.  Most of the these teams have limited flexibility for next season and will be dumping veteran contracts this off-season.  This is how I believe KA will weaponize our cap space. I can see guys like Varlomov and Dumba at the top of KA’s list.

I'm not advocating a trade , I like VO a lot, my point was that we need to get a upper level goalie for next season and might need to trade some quality for quality.

This is completely awful. He’s the guy that hooked me on hockey at a young age. I got into the sport during the height of the Islander dynasty and to me he was the best player on the ice. That’s why I chose 22 for my beer league.

I know he doesn’t fit the bill for other peoples visions of an ideal hockey player, but for me, he was just a guy who went out there and scored goals like nobody’s business with a great name. This is just awful.

Maybe the best goalscorer ever. Lethal shot. I remember being at the Aud for his for ever career goal.

This is generally true, but not likely the case here. I think ownership has been sold on a rebuild and being patient with our young goalies is likely part of that process.

For clarity, I’m not suggesting we don’t need a goaltending upgrade. Just that there is a big gap between what we have and going out and getting a Connor Hellebuyck level goalie.

I agree with you , I was just trying to make a point where the poster said that 'going all in' starts the clock too. That's part of the job, I think Adams has earned some trust and time, but I don't think it's wise to count on college players to jump to the NHL and guide the team to the playoffs. We need a 2 - 3 year bridge to the young kids.

    A few things on this.

    - I don't think the Jets would do it.  They have so many well-regarded vets that I think they take one more shot of trying to win with their core. Hellebuyck will remain be a huge part of that.

    - If, however, they did make him available, there will be a dozen NHL teams interested.  The cost will be high.  I think for us to get him would take at least one piece that would really hurt.  We aren't getting him for Vegas 1st and Johnson or UPL and Florida's 1st.  It would cost multiple pieces and one or two them would be something that Adams would not give up like our first this year or Peterka or Krebs or Quinn.  Hellebuyck is a top 5 NHL goalie; one of only a handful of goalies that you can confidently say: "I know what I'm going to get from him".  The Jets are not moving him in a rebuild for our 8th and 9th best draft/prospect assets.  The cost might be Vegas's 1st, Peterka and Portillo.  Fans will say that's crazy and they would be right.  It's also why we won't be making such a trade.

    - I like what Adams has done since the Krueger firing and I think we are on the right track. While I would be excited if we went out and acquired a goalie like Hellebuyck, such an acquisition would start the clock on Adams' future with the team.  The moment a GM acquires the player who changes the expectations from "we are building something here" to "we are in the hunt" is the moment that a GM starts the clock on being fired.  I don't say this cynically as I don't think Adams will have this front of mind this offseason; but I think we are another season away from this kind of "we are all in" move.

Having subpar goaltending for 3 straight seasons will also start the clock on a GM's firing. He needs to fix the goalie situation for next season.

I'd make that deal right now.

    But I doubt Winnipeg would.

Hell no. You can find good goaltending for relatively low cost. Certainly no need to trade a 1st and a prospect for it.

Remember how the Sabre goalies when we attempted to tank for Eichel with no talent on the team kept trying to ruin our tank job by playing really well?

    Where?

  7. Something really good brewing with this team. I was all gloom and doom at the start of the season, but I'm totally on board now.  They're a fun team to watch, some great young talent on the team, and some real exciting players ready to make the jump next season. I take back most of what I said this past offseason. Still work to do, but reason to be very excited for next season. I forgot how great hockey is to watch when it's played with passion and skill. What's really great is that they are focusing on scoring goals, not winning boring games. Just the style fans love to see.

Ummm, I’ll assume you dont know Sabres have the Knights 1st rounder. ?

I'm well aware of that. But the title of the thread is about 1 person, not the team or draft pick.  You obviously were speaking of Eichel, not the draft pick.

I'd be thrilled with getting another high pick.

No, not if we have their draft pick.

The thread is not about the draft pick, it's about Eichel possibly missing the playoffs again. Just like the Sabres.

This is where I'm at. If he gets the upgraded roster next year, especially goaltending, and does not show improvement, then you can say it's the coaching.

But for this year, the roster was a joke.

I was talking to some leaf fans last night that were absolutely laughing at who KA signed to play goalie this year. They also laughed at our "top" line of Tuch, Thompson, and Skinner, who by all intents and purposes sound like a 2nd or 3rd line for most teams. They did acknowledge that there could be a future in Power and Levi. They were unaware of Quinn and Peterkas stories though.

Canadians love players that were in the world juniors. They are heroes for life after winning a gold.

They should know Quinn, but Peterkas isn't really a big story yet.

Eichel said "7 years."  The game last night had roughly 12,000 fans.  Thousands short of a sellout.  In the last 7 years, there have been a number of sellouts and loud crowds.  I attended a sold out game during the 10 game winning steak in the Housley era.  It was loud and highly engaged.  So, if he was referring to the last couple of years, which included COVID, yes, he'd be correct.  But to say "7 years" is just him being a prick.  And to say "me leaving" is just a further indicator of what a self-centered guy he is.

Yes he was being a prick, I know he should be above the pettiness and personal attacks from the fans, but I'm guessing after not being able to have surgery he wanted, crapped on by fans after working his butt off here, he probably didn't give a crap and said what he said. I can't really blame him, buffalonians can be an insufferable bunch of people. Must love and kiss butt to them all the time.

Good for you. The crowd sounded amazing. Not just the booing but reacting to the awful officiating. Most engaged I've heard a Sabres crowd be in a while. Gave me chills.

    Kinda what Eichel said.

  12. It's funny, it was obviously a low blow to go after the Sabres crappy attendance this season, but listen to what people had said and are currently saying about Eichel. If you think what he said was bad, what's being said about him was way worse and much of this was all said before yesterday's game.

Actually a victory by the Sabres puts the pressure on Vegas to make the playoffs, they're barely in it right now. Edmonton's right on their tail and with Dallas and Nashville with games in hand, this is a must win for them, so this isn't just draft position for the Sabres pick but the VGK's one as well.

That may work locally but it doesn't for out of town'rs that get blocked by the app. It'll be interesting who plays on what lines today. Awaiting @Brawndo update.

With our luck, Vegas misses the playoffs, but moves way up in the lottery, moving our pick to next season.

Quinn, Power, Krebs, and maybe Paterka should be in Buffalo next year.  We need some useful vets to supplant the Eakins, Bjorks, and Haggs in the line-up.  We need real goaltending next year.  We need a more balanced mix of players in the line-up.  The time to start rising in the standings starts this off-season.

How many eakins do we have in the lineup? How many Bjorks? No wonder we blow.

Depends on what you mean by traditional?     The old Aud was the height of funny, clever and edgy in the 70’s and 80’s..  The Sabres booster club sat in the uppers golds on a corner where the Sabres shoot twice.  They had lots of funny/edgy comments and chants. The Phantom Sign Maker’s were up in the Oranges and were also funny, clever and edgy.

Neither exist today in the corporate and PC new milenia.

I’ll take all that plus the organist, the Sabres Girl, the Sabres dance and characters like Shack, Spinner and King Kong, the occasional bench clearing  donnybrook,  and of course sellouts every game.

Piping in a rock and pop “hits” and artificial noise is not as good. Sorry

I recently went to the Sabres at Coyotes game and I hated the atmosphere with the loud music and the PA announcer acting like this was WWF. Give me Milt Ellis any day!

I've argued in the past that the last thing we need to do is put more kids in the lineup.  We are not giving the kids we have enough veteran leadership.  The4 last last thing we need to do is skew the kids-to-vet ratio any more than it is already skewed.

I decided to compare the rosters of all of last seasons playoff teams to our roster this year to get a feel for how well distributed age is in a playoff roster.

The thing that stuck out to me was, compared to those playoff teams we have the 3rd most kids under 25 on the roster and have the fewest 27yrs+ vets on the roster. Of those 27yr old+ vets we have Anderson, Butcher, Dell, Eakin, and Tokarski.  So 5 of our 11 vets are barely NHL players.  There isn't a single team in the league that supports so many young players with so few good veterans.

And we want to put more kids in the lineup?  It's not a recipe for success.

We're gonna get younger too.  Add Power and Quinn before the end of the season.
