The problem with losing the Yotes is the howl after a goal. I will miss hearing that.
Those of us that live here have been waiting so long to get things straightened out, it seemed for a moment that it might just happen this time.
The organization has stockpiled high draft picks the past few seasons, a ridiculous amount. The future looked bright on the ice, but could never get it right off of it.

If they stay with the same owner they're morons. And I bet there will be no new arena, not even close, by 2028.
They way I see it, if Meruelo manages to get the arena built then they will give him the expansion franchise. If he hits delay after delay and spins his wheels, they'll look elsewhere.
I'll believe it when I see it.
No kidding. That seems pretty obvious.

If the Yotes leave the Phoenix area, I don't see the NHL expanding back into that market with the same ownership. The ownership is a large part of why that team has been such a ***** show; why give him another franchise? Would they expect a different outcome? Why would they?
He's only been owner for a few seasons. He's not the reason that there has been problems. It's all been poorly managed since day one and it seems that the politically connected really don't like the idea of a hockey team, for some reason. They bend over backwards for Dbacks, Cardinals and Suns, but throw up every possible roadblock for the Coyotes.
They started in a basketball arena with obstructed seats, then they build in the wrong part of town... poor ownership all along the way. This owner seems dedicated to Phoenix, plus the project is much more than the arena, so a real money maker in a great location. Hockey is pretty big out here and growing. Youth hockey is great here, ASU division I hockey is a strong program and lots of people here from hockey cities. It's just been handled so poorly since day 1.

Also- He doesn't even have the land to build on, Scottsdale doesn't want to build the infrastructure. I think he would have to clear those hurdles and have a stadium well into construction before they would even consider giving him a franchise.
The development isn't in Scottsdale, but just adjacent to it. The mayor just changed his tune, saying he's ok with it, as long as there is a plan to deal with traffic hitting Scottsdale.
It sounds like, if the win the auction, there is a lot a prep work to be done, which will take quite a while with planning and actually doing the work. The league does not want 3 more years at Mullet.
It has come out that talks with SLC have been going on for a bit, even while the ownership group was talking up the new project, so I think it's highly likely that the NHL would give Phoenix an expansion team in a few years.

which coincidentally is about the anticipated cost of the expansion fee. Imagine that.

Isn't it his contract year? How many times have we seen that...player has huge year gets big contract and all life happily ever after (except of course their production then drops way off and they are traded for a bag of hockey pucks and someone to be named later to Arizona with some other team retaining half the
Off the top of my head, didn't tampa sign their top players to big contracts and win a couple cups and still have those guys playing at a high level, Winnipeg this past off season did the same and they're having a great season. So, how many times have we seen it?

Sabres are doing everything they can to ruin this kid. Rush him back again so he gets hurt again. Sit him rest if year let him get healthy.
Always someone that suggests not playing a guy coming back from injury.
Wait longer, don't risk injury...., what makes you think they rushed him back?

If our top prospect is Benson, who goes 15 games between points, how much or how soon can we expect anything out of this group?

Raw size is not everything. Mike Peca played big even though he was well under 6' tall. Whom do we have coming up that plays big?
He was 5'11", but I get your point.

and back in the day a "celly" was considered hot dogging and would get you a smack in the face. Times change. These days it's a thing teams do and deciding not to do it on purpose is the issue.
True, but it's a dumb thing.
Fans, especially Buffalo fans, are too needy.
When I was going to games with my dad, and then with my own season tickets, it was a thrill just to go to games, I didn't need to be coddled.
Yeah, times have changed, but for the better? I'm not so sure.

A team is a reflection of their coach. They should not have to stick up for him. They should play better. Be ready to play in the first period, and put in a better effort.
I don't disagree that the team needs to play better, I think we all agree there.

It’s not about doing the salute or not doing the salute. It’s the reason behind why they won’t.
The reason seems to be the players sticking up for their coach. I'm OK with that.

Without the fans there is no franchise. They need to realize this.
Somehow the franchise survived for decades without the post game salute.

I guess this is just a symptom of the disease, being a terrible organization.
Also...
The team deserved some boos.
I'm ok with the team supporting their coach this way.
Fans need to stop feeling like they need their butts kissed and then get upset when it's not being kissed.

I honestly don't know what to think about anything anymore.
Like, we clearly lack some bottom end depth/physical play. Guys who play big and tough. Girgs and Okie are part of that problem.
But if a team like Boston, winning the east right now, wants these guys....That said, I think there would be a lot less criticism of these guys if we had a Deslauriers and/or Reaves around.
I do think this team is a couple of clones away from being a lot better. At least the foreword group.
Benson- Thompson - Tuch
Peterka - Mitts - Quinn
Greenway - Mitts - Tuch
Deslauriers - Girgs - Okie/Reavesjust wondering at what point this year will fans expect Benson to actually get a point before wanting him on the top line.

It could be viewed as a great opportunity for a player who is being buried in the Bruins organization by the talent ahead of them.
It's got to be real depressing getting traded to Buffalo.

Either of them would be an excellent contributor on that roster. But Boston's up against the cap... so what Bjork-level contract shedding would GM Sheevyn be taking this time?
Just imagine getting traded from Boston to Buffalo. How depressing that would be.

Wouldn't surprise me at all if Mitts wants to go elsewhere. If I were him, I'd get as far away from Buffalo as possible. He'll get a very good contract on the market and most certainly a better situation overall.

Good. That means he's doing his job, the punk.
His job is to score goals, not antagonize the other team.

He only got 2% of the vote. Seems there are a TON of punchable faces in the league.
The Athletic is pretty inexpensive and an excellent site.

To answer your question why would anyone want to be here? They want to play "close to home" (I'm pretty sure I read a couple places more NHL players are from the Metro Toronto area than any other city by far). They want their family and extended family to be able to come to games, BUT they do not want to take less money in Toronto than in Buffalo (the big 4/5 in TO took all the money) or they just don't want the trouble/aggravaton of playing in that market (some players love it, others hate it). Now, this is not saying that people WANT to come to Buffalo, but there might be players who fit that description that would want to be here.
i would prefer people want to come here because it's the Sabres, not because it's closer to home. If they want to win, they won't come here.

He’s tradable. The “poor buffalo, no one will accept a trade here (because of our own doing (look at Winnipeg), leaving out the fact half the league does not have a NTC and we are only asking the team to overcome to the extent of not being *anomalifically* bad ie it’s zero excuse)” thing goes both ways: as long as the contract is reasonable, and Cozens’ is, teams will perceive him to be suffering from the “Buffalo tax” where he’d be likely to flourish in a better environment- and I feel like the proof has been in the pudding on that
Not advocating to trade him specifically, just sayin’
I never said anything about players not wanting to be traded here, but I think that's true. Why would any player want to be in Buffalo?
