  1. For your first sentence, that is literally objectively nowhere near as bad as EJ's display of quarterbacking last game. Some garbage time against the Jacksonville Jaguars' prevent defense helped his final stats (not sure by how much, I don't plan on looking them up), but jesus.

I'm not bashing EJ because it's the thing, or because I like TT. I agree TT hasn't looked good outside of Miami/Indy and a couple garbage times of his own. I'm bashing the worst display of quarterbacking I've ever seen in my life. His big throw to Gragg on the second drive was awful, Gragg had to fall down to catch it, should have been a TD. Then he overthrew the man wide open in the back of the end zone again. That short hop to Woods with no pressure. The guy cannot play QB. Sorry I'm lazy to you for witnessing the worst display of quarterbacking in my life. Yes, it really was that bad.

The Jags went into their "prevent defense" in the 2nd quarter? No wonder they are 2-5

You negated your own point.  Do you remember Tyrod running for 24 yards on a critical 3rd and 23 when the game was on the line?  Or his ankle-breaking touchdown run to put the Bills within one score?  How about his clutch 58 yard pass to Hogan after straining his MCL two plays prior play due to a horse collar tackle.  Or his touchdown pass with 5 minutes left to put the Bills up?  Or the fact that he had zero interceptions and zero fumbles (unlike EJ).

Tyrod struggled in the first half (as did the whole Bills offense) but he made clutch plays when it matters.  ..and got the "W."

If the Bills D held the lead against the Jags would EJ be getting credit for the "W" or would people being saying, "it was just the Jags."

The overall point is that this great divide in talent that some fans, and to an extent WGR, are trying to create just doesn't exist. The only difference in my eyes is that Taylor came from a much better situation in Baltimore than Manuel has had here in Buffalo the previous two seasons which has hampered EJ's development. There is no reason to discard Manuel, Taylor has not proven he is any teams long term solution. It is still very much in doubt who will end up the better NFL QB. They can both end up starters in the league or they can both end up being backups.

  2. Ah yes, I remember TT's stretch of 2 picks, one of them being a pick six, and a fumble that was recovered for a touchdown, in a span of a few minutes, in the Titans game. Dreadful.

Do you remember 10 of 17 for 109 yards for the game, not a quarter or half, the entire game.

I know it's the in thing to bash on EJ, I find that opinion lazy and the easy way out, but how many quarterbacks are going to have a stretch like that and see that QB come back and play the ball he did from the last part of the first half to end of the game? The kid showed something there. Injuries and Doug Marrone hurt Manuel early on. The kid makes some throws that makes me wonder if given some time with some decent coaching if he couldn't be a viable NFL QB. Not saying Tom Brady, but if Ryan Fitzpatrick can still find work there is no reason Manuel can't be a starter in this league.

  3. 1) you apparently didn't watch EJ's Houston or Jacksonville game.

    2) he still put the team on his back, and won the game for us

    3) who cares? It was his 5th career start

Not saying this is you, but years of bad QB play has turned the fans into the most ignorant group of people wanting a new QB always and then giving up on them at any signs of struggling.

Taylor made a couple of big plays with his legs in that game, sure. But that game was won by the defense who kept it close while Taylor and the offense dislodged their heads from their .

  4. I would not trade for him........I would like to see this team play together for a year before we make another big move

The problem with that is a Stamkos level player won't likely be available next season. It's one of those situations where opportunity can out weigh patience.

  5. Every team has the rules applied to them exactly the same and the refs never have an impact of the outcomes of games. Let's say it all together now,...

    The question is "Why?"

Why would the NFL or the officials target the Bills? As mentioned, they are one of the least relevant teams in the league, why expend the effort? Is the league afraid the Bills are going to overtake the Patriots? The league hates the Patriots, wouldn't the "enemies of my enemies are my allies" apply? If you want to believe in conspiracies, wouldn't the logical one be that the NFL would help the other three teams in the division? Is the league out to get Rex Ryan? Why? Does the league want to get Terry Pegula? Why?

Seriously, for anyone out there who thinks the league is out to get the Bills, please give an answer that isn't easily debunked.

  6. Are we forgetting the Giants and Titans games were his 4th and 5th career starts? I think he's been impressive for essentially a rookie

He looked worse than EJ ever has for most of that Titans game.

I don't know many of the specific rules of football, including this one.  I still don't understand why it wasn't a legal block.

I also liked us keeping our streak of illegal block in the back penalties going.  They got a really good shot of Rex watching the replay and incredulously mouthing "where the ###### was the flag?"

It's the same as the "defenseless receiver" calls. You just can't take free shots on either side of the ball. The league said they were going to emphasis these hits going back to last season. IMO, it was a selfish play by Woods, he was looking for an ESPN highlight hit. It hurt the Bills. The McCoy fumble hurt, the ball inside the 5 instead of the 20 puts the Bills defense in a better spot.

  7. I'm not an NFL fan, but watched the game yesterday.

Rex Ryan looked like a coach that is lost.

Manuel still needed a play book on his left arm as the #2 QB 7 games into the season.

Don't think the defense did all that bad, 34 points against where 21 points manuel and his interceptions were to blame the most.

Thing with defense is though, don't know if Rex is using different set up than last year, but if he is he should be thinking about changing back, opposing Quarterbacks seem to have to much time to throw the ball.

I believe most QB's if not all have the plays on their wrist band.

  8. No ######, Manuel threw two interceptions looking for Woods all the time.

Would this be the same Woods who took the 15 yrd penalty with the selfish crack back block that gave the ball to the Jaguars close to their 20 instead of down within the 5 on the McCoy fumble? Those plays were are hurtful to the Bills cause as any other.

  9. My understanding is that no professional sports team has enough economic impact to make tax money sunk into facilities, etc. an economic net gain for a region.  Can't say I have a link to back it up.  I'm sure someone more ambitious than me with find one.

I would think there would have to be an economic impact study done somewhere.

  10. I don't know how any coach could have confidence in EJ after this game, he singlehandedly lost the game. I understand Rex can't throw him under the bus but to stand up there and say that he's 100 percent capable as the qb is a slap in the face to fans. For having such a big mouth the rest of the week, he sure doesn't like the truth when he loses

    This is complete !

He had a bad stretch of players but composed himself and gave the team a chance to win the game. After the sack and fumble TD the Bills coaches shouldn't have had EJ back in the pocket throwing passes. He was dinged up and it showed. They should have ran the ball and had who the back up QB in there giving EJ a chance to shake off the hit. And holly F*ck, can a coaching staff screw up a two minute drive any worse. They new they were getting the ball back with about 2:20 left in the game, how was the offense not ready. Every good team I have ever watched has multiple plays called on the two minute drive, that they only got the one play off before the two minute drill was an epic fail on the part of the coaches. Three chances at 1 yard and they couldn't get it done. Gannon had it right, rolling a right handed towards the short side of the field was a dumb call, it didn't work on the two point conversion and it didn't work then.

And how many $100's of millions is this defense making? The Bills score 10 points at the end of the 1st half and had the momentum, what does the defense do, they give up a drive of almost 10 minutes, great job on the goal line stand, but they needed to get the Jags of off the field. For the Jags it killed the Bills momentum and the 9:50 off of the clock were as good as points.

How much taxpayer money has been spent on the Bills that has essentially been worthless? How stupid are we for contributing to this idiocy? How stupid are we for letting people convince us that the Buffalo Bills are a worthwhile investment? How many people spend money on this team like they have nothing better to do with it? And how are we supposed to call those people anything other than rubes?

Are numbers available indicating tax dollars to the Bills compared to the economic impact of the Bills on the area?

  11. Kentucky Greg's is now serving Beer Cheese Soup, like everything else they serve, it's amazing.

    Also,

Went to breakfast at Nick's Place on Amherst Street, just west of Wegman's, on Saturday, very good and reasonably priced. My favorite spot for breakfast is the Howling Rooster on Kenmore Ave, I will be adding Nick's Place into the rotation.

  12. I have to say I have been pretty blah on Tyler Ennis for most of his career with the Sabres, I will say his attempt to play physical considering his size has been impressive and his skating without the puck and overall hustle is exactly what a fan should hope to see. I don't know what type of leader he is in the locker-room, his play on the ice should be speaking volumes.

If I am Johan Larsson I am hoping the video equipment breaks down or the game tape gets destroyed some how. Final 30 seconds in the game, the puck is on his stick at the top of the right face-off circle and his shot goes 5 feet wide on the far side? That was the Sabres final chance and it needed to make it to the net at the very least. I just don't see him finishing the season with the Sabres unless his play improves ten fold.

  13. Only the most casual fan would expect the turnaround to be instantly complete. But it's OK to be upset with a 7-2 loss and question what's going on. It's OK to not buy into a "yay, we look better, nice try Dakota" mindset. Really, it is.

What is there to be upset about? Losing to a Canadians team that is the midst of a historic run? They are 9-0 and outscoring opponents 35-12. Lose to Toronto 7-2 or Florida, then yeah, I can see concern creeping in. The Sabres and Canadians are at opposite ends of the process, the Sabres are just starting out and the Canadians are fine tuning.

I have never been impressed with Murray, he seems a bit cocky for someone who has never held this position before

So far he hasn't wowed me with any deal as he seems to not care what he has to spend to get what he wants and overpays for it

Is he an improvement over Regier though, definitely, but then I believe even the dumbest Chimp would have been an improvement over him.......

This idea that there is some set path that you have to follow and that it takes time to get this team turned around is completely bogus in the age of free agency. This team is weak on defence right now (not horrible but not anything to write home about) and has nothing in place in net right now. I didn't have a problem with lehner coming in to compete for the #1 spot, but there seems to be no backup plan aside from hoping in a few years there will be a starter ready down in Rochester. With lehner going down for some time it would have been nice to see the Sabres atleast try and show that they weren't just going to coast through another year and not make an attempt at going for a playoff spot and try to get a veteran to fill the crease, instead they just say they are going to ride Johnson and see what happens. I don't expect them to make the playoffs this year, but I do expect them to atleast try and make it look like thats the goal. Winning and trying to even squeak into the playoffs in the 8th spot isn't going to ruin this team or set them back. Unfortunately alot of Lemmings seem to believe that they have to follow one path that takes years before they can start to say the words playoffs.

If the Sabres could have easily solidified their goaltending situation in just one off-season than everyone would be doing it.  I wasn't a fan of the Lehner trade, it was an over payment for what was until that point an average goalie. There just isn't a lot of great quality available around the league when it comes to goaltending. Much like QB's in the NFL.  The Sabres will have to be partly lucky to find a goaltender within the next few seasons unless the can trade for a quality starter or get lucky as they did with Miller as a 5th round pick.

I've been thoroughly disappointed with Sabres fans this season so far. There was no way a team turns over 3/4 of its roster and it just all of a sudden gels. If this team is any good this year, and the eyeball test says yes, some time is needed. The D and goaltending are big question marks. We won't know what we have there for half a season. Then forwards are good. They look good. They are just a half step off.

I honestly thought buffalo fans were smarter than this. Maybe it's just impatience with all the losing. It's going to take time. You better find a way to understand the process so you can enjoy the journey. These are our guys. It's going to happen. Just hold on.

As an old-timer all you have to do is look at the picture in the Norm Lacombe thread as a reminder of how the process works and in most cases doesn't work. There was a ton of hope back then, I would say as much as there is now, there just isn't any guarantee it will. You mention late in this thread regarding the casual fan, I think that the casual fan you mention believes it's a matter of "when" this team wins a Cup over "if" this team will win a Cup. They see the names of the players acquired and expect instant success. It is a marathon as mentioned, not just within the season, but the entire process. It's also going to painful and it is more than likely that many of the names we currently see on the roster won't be a part of it, if they ever do win a cup.

Overall it's about patience and tempering fan expectations with realistic expectations.

Saw this pic in a Sabres history book today and managed to find it online.

Not much to see here, but that image of Lacombe gave me a chuckle.

Norm Lacombe's name appears twice on the Stanley Cup, with the Oilers back in '87 & '88.

  15. Seeing that the Sabres are rumoured to be highly interested in him since the summer.

Going on his eight season with a ton of production, yet still only 25.  He only has one year left on his contract and is expected to garner interest in the 10 million range next season, which the Bolts won't want to pony up.  The Sabres have the cap space.

I have a feeling for the Sabres to get him they would have to give up Reinhart. and another top prospect

    I'm thinking

    Reinhart

    Baptiste

    Pysyk

    1st rounder 2016

    for

    Stamkos

I think he is a different maker that would create lines like:

    Kane   Stamkos   Ennis

    OReilly   Eichel   Gionta

    Moulson Girgenson McGinn

    Deslaurier  Legwand/Larsson  Foligno

Granted the Sabres look like a team about to burst out in a scoring spree, this trade would for sure make them the most potent top 6 in hockey.

The question would be what one would think fair value is to get a stud like Stamkos

You're not even getting a 2nd phone call from the Lightning with what you have offered. You are looking to pick-up the premier goal scorer in the NHL who has yet to hit his prime, the price is going to hurt. If you are really interested in Stamkos you better get use to the idea of moving Girgenson, Ristolainen, Reinhart and multiple #1 picks & prospects.  The lightning will assuredly be looking for NHL ready assets and futures.

They don't have as much leverage because Stamkos can leave as an UFA and they get nothing.

The leverage comes from all the teams that would be in that bidding war. A player like Stamkos being available is unprecedented. I can't remember the last time a 25 year old 50-60 goal scored hit the trade market.

  16. What we should have had was PIMs too.  I actually play in one league where you lose points for PIMs.  Puts a whole different perspective on player selection.  We use a point system vice category.  Every now and then something completely unexpected happens that blows up your night/week, like a guy like Patrice Bergeron getting a 10 minute major...  Puts a degree of randomness in it that I like.  It also makes a selection of Marchand or Lucic a risk/reward/penalty proposition.

I would prefer that fighting majors be a choice rather than just penalty minutes.

I was in an ESPN league that actually rewarded penalty minutes. Steve Downie's tantrums won me a couple of weeks.

Only thing I don't like about the Gold league is there is only one substitute. Really leaves for making roster moves during the week rather uneventful.

I believe this was the reason Gold was created.

  17. It's a forum and the thread is meant for discussion. There is plenty of room to speculate what our weaknesses are

I just can't get there after 5 games. There are just too many new pieces that have been playing together for a month. For myself, I need to see a lot more before I start having concerns.

  18. The point being that we know this is a young team, and we can't call McCabe, Pysk, and other youngsters definitively as successful or not, but we can discern what our potential and likely weaknesses are. As you'll note at the start of the thread, 3 areas of concern are laid out, and our 3 best prospects in those areas are detailed. Hence the areas of concern aren't solely limited to the current roster.

IMO, it's too early for concerns. There are no strengths or weaknesses at this point, only potential. We have to let this thing play out before we can come to any definitive conclusions. There just isn't enough data to come to any conclusions.

  19. So we've seen a few games, definitely not enough to judge this team, but maybe enough to know where our areas of weakness are. It's well known on this board our need for a RW, goal-tending is a huge question and a LHD or a stable top pairing defense for that matter. So, my question is, what do we target next?

I can't get past the first line. If there is not enough time to judge this team than how can we get to the conclusion of what the teams weaknesses are?

  20. I find the question in the title of this thread very reminiscent of when the insecure girlfriend continuously asks "why do you love me?"

It just seems in the world today that for that small percentage of billionaires that purchasing a professional sports franchise is the logical thing to do. Like a private jet, mansion and tropical get away, a sports franchise seems to be a staple for the modern day billionaire. it's a status symbol.

  21. I've tried to recall a controversial goal where a play was off sides leading up to it and I can't. I remember in like 1981 in game five against the Nordiques Mike Foligino scored a late goal but he was off side but aside from that.

So I just don't think this was a glaring situation that required a solution. Don't fix what isn't broken

Didn't the Islanders beat the Flyers in the Finals on a very famous off-sides goal?

  22. I think it's largely a thing with the number of people that have moved away from Buffalo. I run into people either from Buffalo or some sort of "my relation is from there" all the time. There are a couple of places around Philly that will always have the Buffalo game on.

What's going to happen when all these people decide to move back? Buffalo is on the rise and the housing market is on the cusp of a real boom. I just wish I was 20 years younger to take real advantage of it.
