  1. I said it before the draft, by getting the second pick the Sabres effectively won the draft because they weren't pressured into drafting McDavid. In my heart I know the Oliers are going to regret how this draft played out for many years. The Oilers drafted a quality player, just not the player they needed.

  2. Yeah, slow the game down more and they still get reviews wrong quite often, so this practically solves little.

I don't have the numbers at hand but I would guess the rate of the calls being corrected by replay is very high, when they can be corrected. There are some plays that replay can not provide a clear answer either way. For the most part instant replay has upgraded the officiating in the NFL greatly.

As far as slowing the game down, I'd gladly give up another 15-20 minutes of viewing time to make sure the calls are right. Sunday afternoons are dedicated to football starting in September and ending in February, so a few extra minutes of game time  means nothing.

  3. The Columbus Blue Jackets role into town on a Monday afternoon to take on our Buffalo Sabres. The Blue Jackets are coming off consecutive losses to the NYR, and, like the Sabres, they are win-less so far this season. With Lehner out long term, we better get used to Chad Johnson in net, and pray that Bogosian comes back sometime soon.

As a rant, day games can ###### off. There are 3 NHL day games tomorrow, who the hell is able to watch those? I'll be listening to the game somewhere on campus hopefully

Aren't Columbus Day day games fairly common? The Sabres played the Ducks last year on Columbus Day during a day game. A lot of people have off.

  4. Yesterday was a battle between two very even and very average football teams. The Bills caught a break, most other teams would have been able to take advantage of he Bills first 3 quarters of struggling offensively. Taylor was absolutely horrible up until the two scoring drives. A similar performance to yesterday won't cut it against the Bengals. If the Bills aren't at the very top of their game they will be a staggering 1-3 halfway through the home schedule.

  5. Well, I too was expecting more than 1 goal per game on offense.

It didn't help that the Sabres started off against two of the better teams in the Conference. I'm sure things would have looked a lot better if the opening two games were against the Leafs and Flyers.

We have to remember that this new group with all their new pieces has been skating together for less than a month. I am not concerned by the lack of chemistry at this point just as I would not be fooled if they came out guns a blazing.

  6. I wasn't impressed by O'Reilly at all.  Or Ennis.  Or Moulson.  Last night those three looked like they belonged on last seasons' team.

Not a fan of Moulson, would like to see the Sabres move him to Toronto for Lupul. Even with the injuries I'd take him over Moulson.

  7. So GMTMs big splash in the goalie market lasted one inning..

Let's just hope that Lehner doesn't become to Murray what Tim Connolly was to Darcy Regier.

IMO, this entire year is about what is being developed upfront with all the young talent. Lehner being injured 1 game or for the season changes nothing for me.

  8. I read his post differently. I heard "define when a scoring play starts". When does the scoring play originate during 4 minutes of skating without a whistle that includes 4 blue line crossings, a missed interference, one puck off a hand, and a goal? Do you review all 4 blue line crossings and potential missed penalties?

Everything is a scoring play in hockey. Football starts and stops with each whistle. You can review the entire seven seconds in between (which drives me nuts). Football's discreet and hockey's analogue.

I ask not knowing, and not to make a point - if a goaltender feeds a defenseman, who in turn feeds a forward, who in turn scores, do you review the trapezoid rule? If a blown icing call against team B (guilty, but not called) keeps the puck in play, allowing a forward on Team A to streak toward the net instead of meandering to his defensive zone for a face off, and team A scores, did the scoring play begin with the blown icing? Tell me when the scoring play begins. Arbitrary convention: go back 7 seconds? "My team got screwed but it took 8 seconds"! How does review fix anything?

My humble reading of Andrew Amerk.

"Goals will only be reviewed for a potential "Off-Side" infraction if: (a) the puck does not come out of the attacking zone again; or (b) all members of the attacking team do not clear the attacking zone again, between the time of the "Off-Side" play and the time the goal is scored. ... In the event a goal is reversed due to the Linesman determining that the play was "Off-Side" prior to the goal being scored, the clock (including penalty time clocks, if applicable) will be re-set to the time at which the play should have been stopped for the "Off-Side" infraction."

This seems pretty cut and dry. All these exaggerated scenarios are pointless.

  9. This is stupid.

Just review plays that immediately affect the goal.

If there's a blown offsides, then the next face off outside the blueline a goal ends up happening, is THAT reviewed? NO.

So, the idea here is that since you can't correct all non-scoring plays using replay the NHL shouldn't try to use replay to correct scoring plays?

You're missing the point. The idea here is that mistakes are a big part of sports. A mistake cost us a Cup. Other mistakes have cost other teams as well. The more things we add to the game that work to overturn mistakes, the more annoyed we're going to be with the ones that do happen. When you try to make something like this "perfect" you ultimately end up ruining it. Now we're all going to be dreading the inevitable coach's challenge and it's going to suck the fun out of every goal celebration. Enjoying the moment is such a big part of sports for fans. Want to celebrate that big overtime win? Oops challenge flag. Everyone stop having fun.

    Barf.

I'd be more concerned about being the team that gets screwed on an invalid goal than worrying about when fans get to cheer. It's not about making anything perfect, it's about using the available technology to fix correctable mistakes. Which the NHL is doing. Is any system perfect right out the gate? No, I'm sure the NHL will have to make some tweaks here and there. Overall, the NHL got this right.

If fans want to complain about something that is ridiculous, try 3 on 3 overtimes, that is embarrassing to the game. 3 on 3 was a horrible decision by the NHL and one I hope goes away fairly quickly.

  10. I think my buddy put offside like we saw last night into perspective.  It would be like scoring a TD and then reviewing it because there was holding the play before.

Not even close. It's like reviewing the play because there was holding on that play.

I wish the NFL challenge system included penalties. Either review the entire play or just end all reviews & challenges.

  11. I just wanted to toss this out before the season starts and ppl think it has something to do with my team.

For Gold league it is stupid we are using GAA for goaltenders. GAA is a team metric and does not reflect much in the way of a gt skills. We should be using SV% and I don't understand why we aren't. SV% is the metric that tells you how good a GT is. GAA is superfluous.

Second while I agree Goals are important I think it is odd we have G, PPG, GWG.  3 entire categories devoted to 1 statistic.  My biggest gripe here is the exclusion of PPA.  Considering how PP's in the NHL work these days PPA in particular are a very valuable metric and we are just ignoring it.  We should have included PPA or just made the category PPP.   Not sure if Goals will count double if they are pp but leaving out an entire scoring category, aka PP Assists is stupid.

There, I said my piece and it won't be brought up again by me this season.  Let the season commenc

Shouldn't your argument be more about SV% vs. Saves which we are using? Total amount of saves rewards those goalies that see a lot rubber during a game.

I agree with you on all points.

With your goalies I can see why  ;)

  12. That works for me. Don't add us if the rest of the owners might not like it. I won't be upset if you don't want to do it. After all we've had weeks to consider it, it's really not fair to jump in at the last second. I'm prefectly fine with being a mid-season replacement if need be.

As a late entry penalty one of you has to draft Drew Stafford and the other John Scott  ;)

    Invites sent.

  13. If people in Gold think 14 is too many that's fine, i get that might be, but just let me and JJ know what you think

14 is fine, I just don't think there will be enough GT's if we have 2 starters.

14 is fine for gold because of the short benches, 2 players means even with 14 teams waiver wire pickups are still possible.

Send me the email addresses and I'll send the invites.

  14. Yeah, 14 is too much.

If we had a 14th owner I would send the invites.  I would hate to freeze anyone out.

As in the past, someone is going to drop out or ignore their team. You'll be on top of the replacement owners list if you want.

IMO, there is more than enough offensive talent to support 14 teams. Goalie values would sky rocket, I think it makes things more interesting.
