  1. I wouldn't say getting a goal to tie the game after giving up 4 straight is a sign they are heading in the right direction, especially after blowing an early 3 goal lead.....

Previous teams would have folded after giving up a three goal lead. This group didn't. It's just another sign in a growing list of signs. There's something different about this team, IMO.

    Also,

A three goal lead after one period while being out-shot 18-9, did anyone not expect a Pens comeback?

  2. Bruins was my first thought when I heard he was hitting FA. Then I read about the Toronto stuff that I shared upthread, but Boston still made the most sense to me.. He grew up like 20min north of Boston, then went to Harvard and obviously liked the school and area enough to stay 4 years. I'd imagine all of his family is still around there, his dad played a few games for the Bruins back in the day, and he grew up a Bruins fan.. It all adds up, unfortunately.

This is dead on. No tampering, a kid from the Boston area wanting to play for the Bruins is no surprise. If Nashville was smart they would trade his rights to the Bruins for a pick, sort of locks the Leafs out for a bit.

  3. I don't get the anti-Bogosian sentiment. His, size, age, fixed cost and experience make Bogosian a great fit for this franchise. Is he a Norris Trophy Candidate? No. If he were he wouldn't be a Sabres and would cost a lot more per season. Will he be a fit two or three years down the road. We have no idea. Luckily the Sabres don't have to make that decision now. They can make it two - three years from now.

  4. The kid is straight forward in his interviews love it :D

I liked how he described the goal, he read the play and didn't think he could make the pass so he went straight to the net. This goal should teach him that's were the goals are scored in the NHL.

I also liked the Coach's decision to review the 2nd goal. I doubt they though it would be reversed, what it did do was give a chance for his team to gain composure.

Woohoo! Still in the playoff hunt!

A legit shot at finishing above the Sens and Habs. Not many would have predicted that last off season.

  5. So every league pretty much could use larger goals but NHL needs major help. I'd say 70% of the games are mediocre at this point. But scoring is only one probably and the end to end action is really taking a hit and that also makes games dull.

70%? How many games do you watch? Seems like an arbitrary number. From the games I watch, compared to watching other sports, the NHL has no more or less "mediocre" games than basketball, football or baseball.  82 games each for 30 teams, they are not all going to be instant classics.

I don't need scores to be 6-5 to enjoy a hockey game. I like that goals actually mean something and that goaltenders are now actual athletes. It makes the game stronger, iMO.

  6. My wife and I have been going to estate/yard sales regularly for about the last 4-5 years. Today I hit the jack pot. For a mere $3.50 I picked up 'Schony; the Jim Schonfeld released in 1971. Schony sings such classics as:

    All Along the Watchtower.

    I Saw Her Standing There.

    Great Balls of Fire.

    Chain Gang.

    Before.

    You Can't Do That.

You Always Hurt The Ones You Love.

    Barbecue In Heaven.

Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying.

    Hey Bulldog.

Produced by Jerry Myers and Jon Valby.

This is the coolest thing I have picked up to date. I was wondering if anyone has a hidden treasure they found and would like to share.

    Thanks!

  7. Yeah, why would the sabres be interested in a player who had 42 goals last year. An injury ridden year has made his numbers fall off the cliff.

50 games, 12 goals this season and he will be 32 going into next season. The days of 40 goals are behind Nash. 30 at this point maybe a long shot. Add in age and price and this is not a good fit for a team at the beginning stages of the building process.

  8. Why would the Sabres be interested in a 31 year old who's numbers have fallen off of the cliff?

Adding older players on the downside is what you do when it's time to fine tune the roster, not during the early stages of rebuilding and not for the money/assets it would require.

  9. Let's talk about this five years down the road. I don't believe anyone ever questioned McDavid's ability to produce points. I believe we got the better player, maybe not the more productive scorer, but the better player that will get this team to where we all want to see it, contending and winning Stanley Cups. Five years down the road the Oliers are going to be regreting winning the McDavid Lottery.

  10. Nothing wrong with driving to the Grand Canyon and enjoying the ride.

35 times the Sabres have trailed going into the third period. Not a good number no matter how you look at it.

Here is one thing to take away from it.  37%. 37% of the time the Sabres came back and tied the game. They won six, lost three in OT and 4 times they tied the game to end up losing the game.

That's a decent stat to build some positivity on. You add in games they trailed by a couple of goals and made it a one goal game. This team has some comeback kids in them. I hope it's a trend that continues during the rebuilding of the franchise.

  11. The problem with Matt Moulson is Matt Moulson. He has always been a decent scorer, not a dynamic offensive performer in the sense that he creates a ton of offense on his own, he is an accent piece. What the Sabres need from him is something that Moulson is unable to and is ill equipped to provide and that is creating offense on his own and for others. Moulson is a cleaner, he picks up what others create. The Sabres just do not have enough players that can create the type of offense needed for Moulson to increase his point production.

And frankly, Moulson, IMO, is not a top priority in my eyes. At this point he has played himself into the role of roster filler. He has three years left on his contract which works well for the Sabres, they can keep him around until they need that roster spot for one of the kids.

  12. My Drouin comment was more tongue-in-cheek than serious, but here's my take on Bogosian insofar as I'd like to move him: I want my defensemen to be able to contribute to the generation of offense, even if they're not directly getting points, and he's bad at the traits necessary to do so. He has no outlet pass to speak of, and makes maddeningly inconsistent decisions while trying to put forth his offensive foot. I just think he has minimal offensive hockey sense, and doesn't have the skills to compensate for that in other ways. So you're left with arguing his value based on his potential defensive contributions--"hard to play against" and physicality. While he throws some nice body checks, his physicality is just as inconsistent as his offensive game--he frequently either loses a net front battle, or worse, doesn't even engage in it. It's infuriating to watch when that's supposed to be what he brings! I'd be much more forgiving of his lackluster offensive game if he had a monster defensive game, but he just doesn't. His reputation doesn't match his play. Do I think he's worthless? No, but his play is more reminiscent of a 3rd pair player than a 2nd pair, and he's paid to be not just a 2nd pair Dman, but a good one. Add to it that he misses a quarter of every season with injury, and I really think we can do better.

The most important reason why I would disagree with moving Bogosian is that he is only 24 years old and he is still growing as a player. I would love to see that growth continue here in Buffalo along side our young talented forwards. It's important, IMO, that players like Eichel & Reinhart have those older consistent presences in the lineup they can rely on off the ice as well as on. Players like Bogosian at 24, like O'Reilly, will have a better chance of relating to those young guys than say a 37 year old Gionta or even a 31 Gorges.  Young players have so much more being thrown at them from all different angles that they need steadying influences. Bogosian is a good enough player, with a cost I don't fee is prohibited in anyway, that his value can go beyond just big hits and occasional points.

Sports today isn't as much about "building" as it is about "chemistry". It's as much more about a formula than it is a blueprint.

  13. Timmy held too long last year and got caught holding Stewart.

The way the dominoes are falling looks like Ducks might be the best bet for McGinn

The best fit for McGinn is right here in Buffalo. I can't imagine the two sides are that far off. Get the deal done.
