No. Goalies are notoriously tricky from one year to the next, but Hellebuyck has been good-to-great since coming into the league. You don't trade a franchise goalie who is only now coming into his prime in his late 20s. And he's not even all that expensive.

I agree, even though he is having a below average year.

His play this year exposed some weaknesses that his stellar play has hid in the past.

I will say though, I don't see him re-signing with a Canadian team and he definitely won't re-sign here. No way Chevy is going to give him what he wants/deserves.

I wonder if Hellebuck would be on the block if the Jets miss?

    Highly unlikely.

2 more seasons at 6.17m.. Something like a 1st, 2nd and 4th in Vezina voting in the last 4 years.

Chevy has Scheif's, Wheeler's and Helle's contracts all ending at the same time. The team was/is expected to win in this window...are a cap team and are not going to make the playoffs this year.

I honestly have no idea what he will do but trading Helle is probably the 2nd most unlikely behind PLD.

When I say “core” I’m referring to the Scheifele/Wheeler/Laine unit that represented their best players/the focal point of their roster, at that time. I’d be shocked if they got that far again with Scheifele and Wheeler being the key guys.

Wheeler is 36 this year so I would agree with you there.

Scheif will never be "key" playing the way he has this year.

I'll bet he's glad the NHL isn't going to the olympics.

I think this core peaked in 2018.

    Which players would that be?

    22 year old KC?

    22 year old Morrissey?

    22 year old Ehlers?

    24 year old Trouba?

    23 year old Copp?

    31 year old Stastny?

    33 year old Buff?

    31 year old Wheeler?

    32 year old Enstrom?

Scheif, Myers, Little and Lowry were probably in or entering their prime but that's about it.

    You had to be there.

They were what was left of our defence in the Conference finals vs Carolina.

Okay, gotcha. Haven't heard of any of them!

Lost Beaulieu so it looks like we start 4 rookies on D. Dillon and Pionk are the vets.

Not making the playoffs this year. A cap team with way more good contracts than bad contracts and we're not going to make the playoffs.

Helle having an average year is showing the warts. Covid protocol and injuries don't help but every team has those.

Lots of fans want Scheifele traded, Lowry (the center not the coach) banished to the 4th line blah blah blah.

    Maybe it wasn't Maurice?

I’ll be honest, I think the Oilers have it worse than us. We have little expectations and feel generally disappointed most seasons with lingering hope for the future. Oilers fans are convinced they are Cup contenders every year only to end up being inept and scrambling. I guess it more of a continuous gut punch in the dark versus Buffalo’s staring down of the punch.

The Coilers disease starts in upper management. They have made some really bonehead moves and continue to do so.

    Nurse gets 9.25m???? Seriously???

    Hyman, 29, 5.5m for 7 years???

    Keith 5.5m???

Ceci signed for 4 years at 3.25m???

    Why?

Let's sign a pensioner to play goal for us...

Just unbelievable deals and I love it.

They never fixed their drafting, they are Draisaitl and McDavid away from being a mirror if Buffalo.

The Sabres have better goalies than the Coilers.

Love to see them struggle and hope they don't make the playoffs.

    most likely

I see him playing wing the rest of the year but I think they look at him at center next year (if he stays up this season). Scheif only has 2 more seasons after this one so I think they find out what he can do at center before they deal with Scheif's next contract.

I'd start him off centring the 3rd line with a couple of vets like Copper and Wheeler. I don't see Lowry playing Wheeler in the top 6 if he doesn't deserve it like Maurice did.

    Connor PLD Svechnikov

    Vesalainen Scheif Ehlers

    Copper Perfetti Wheeler

    Stastny Lowry Harkins

Will Perfetti be a winger for the Jets?

He played wing on Dubois' line last night but was at center for the Moose. He definitely has the smarts to play the position but he isn't knocking PLD or Scheifele down and he needs to play in the top six.

His positioning in the defensive zone was spot-on as far as I am concerned. He set up PLD for a sure goal that PLD missed and he missed a goal from point blank range himself.

Samberg and Chisholm didn't look out of place for their first game.

    Unless Donnie G gets sacked.

I think Maurice is an excellent coach for a young, up and coming team. I don't think he is the right coach to get them far into the playoffs, if his teams make it to the playoffs.

A really good educator/communicator but he has flaws that he has had for years.

I don't see him going back into coaching but I do see him coming back into hte organization in a few years. He's making 3m for the rest of the season, he's in no rush.

We could probably package Butcher and Eakin for Scheifele in a trade.

You spelled Dahlin and Power wrong...

Seriously, I don't want to trade him I want him to start playing better. If Scheif and Ehlers get going with the way PLD and KC are playing this year, we'll make the playoffs.

That, to me, is Lowry's challenge. Get all the players going at the same time.

I honestly think we see the coaching staff fired this off-season.

Absolutely true, although resigning instead of firing is a little unique.

I'd even go so far to say that if somebody tracked teams "causing" midseason coach changes over the past 25 years, Sabres would be the number one perpetrator by far.

He resigned because he was going to get fired.

Kudos for the Jets for letting him resign with dignity.

Jets will have a tough time making the post season with players like Scheifele playing like he doesn't give a ***** when he should be showing management why he should be the next captain.

It's a good thing the NHL probably isn't going to the olympics, it saves face for Scheifele because he wasn't going to go playing the way he is this year.
