I think the issue is more urban vs rural. People that live in heavily populated areas like cities, don't want to be worrying about all the people crammed into a small physical area having weapons. Rural areas where your neighbor may be up to a mile away, and grew up in a culture of hunting, are going to have a different view. There should be room for compromise among reasonable people, but the NRA installs fear in gun owners that all their guns will be taken away if there's any compromise.

I went to a kids summer hockey camp in Canada and was given #5. Got awarded most improved in camp and wore it ever since. Then when my son started playing he got the same number and wore it ever since. And we both played D, so it was appropriate. If I was playing now and couldn't get 5, I'd get 98 so I would be the last player announced and my name would be at the end of the roster list.
