He was 24 with the Gophers but that is taken I think by Nelson? Oops Nelson is 34, my bad.

Will GMTM make any moves, big or small, before the season starts?

I think TM will take some time to see which way the wind is blowing. If some teams stumble out of the gate a la Anaheim last year, their may be a deal to be had and he is going to need maneuvering room both capwise and asset wise. A lot would have to go right for this team to make the playoffs and he sees it happening he could make moves at or near the deadline. -
Maybe from a general fanager pov. But what the Sabres had to factor in was cost certainty when they know Jack and Samson need to paid in the same year. The Jackets got a nice deal but I am fine with Risto's.
-
no for the love of all things holy, it must be retired permanently

Jones was on the Preds roster for 77 games so he accrued a year the first year of his ELC. He would have been a UFA at 25. Risto didn't accrue a year his first year. He started in Buffalo was loaned to Finland for the WJC and returned to Rochester after that. He played in 34 games in Rocehester and 34 in Buffalo. He would reach UFA status at 26 opposed to Jones at 25. So you are correct that the Jackets bought 2 years. But I don't think it is a major difference value wise. They will both be 27 when their current deals expire. They will be along with Lindholm hot commodities.

In. 2 units on the Sabres v Habs. Martini this is a dime, when you break it in half you do not get two nickels you get shlt, try and smoke shyt. M: I bet a nickel.
-
Let's assume for arguments sake that he stagnated. 40 pt player with defensive holes. If the cap goes up 2% per year over the next 3 his contract is movable as was Bogosian's. Little downside and a calculated gamble by TM. Plus we will have 5m + when Cody goes on LTIR to work with this season. I get your concern but I would make the same bet.
-
He only logged 34 games his first year so his elc kicked in but he did not accrue a service year towards Ufa, need 40. So we bought one ufa year. Good deal for all parties.

Agreed. 3c maybe a 2

My recollection is foggy and unable to research it right now, but Risto would be on the not reported list as of the Tuesday deadline as of now. If he signs sy Wednesday do the Sabres get any roster relief like they do in football, i.e. the ability to carry more players?

I like those combos but it assumes an equal or more equal distribution of toi and I have little faith DD rolls 4. I think Zemgus is going to get shoved to the bottom.

Galchenyuk is from Milwaukee -
Wow the Oil are really aggressive. Don't know if it will make difference but they are aggressive With the current state of our blue line I'd consider Russell for the vet minimum.

Well played...( golf clap) -
Only if Chicago had the same level of success with ROR. Toews gets accolades based on team success and if Buffalo starts winning so will ROR and others.

I also think you misunderstand or over value the effect of a captain. He is not an assistant coach. Our own captain was demoted to the third line. The captain will have much less influence on success than a league leading scorer. And True there were two parts to his assertion, one of which was Jack wasn't as good as Ryan is now. Ryan was not a Selke finalist last year. I would remind you both that Imwas critical of Jack in the WCOH that in part lead to storm. He has flaws, but he is growing and getting better. WC you see float I see indecision. As his experience grows the instinct will take over. He may never be a Selke finalist but he could be scoring leader. I'll take that. In no way am I bashing ROR I am of the belief that Jack has the charisma and work ethic to be a leader on this team and maybe even the captain. I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility that Samson wears the C either.

Was ROR a Selke finalist last year? No he wasn't. Jack will lead the team in scoring. Other teams will game plan against him. He will be the player the league associates with the Sabres. ROR is a very good player and will be a central part of any chance we have to contend for a cup, but IMHO Jack will be the face of the franchise.

ROR is what you see. A very good player. Multi dimensional. Jack is just scratching the surface, as is Samson. In two maybe three years ROR will be the 4th best forward on the team talentwise. Not knocking him, but we didn't tank for two years to trade for ROR, we did it to get Jack and Samson. And never did I say he was a schlepp. He is not as gifted as Jack and worked to improve his game and skills. But you seem to dismiss the idea that Jack works as hard and will improve his God given talent. I can live with ROR with the C but I don't think that is the plan.
