Yes exactly. If Ekblad is a hair better than Reinhart you take Reinhart. If Ekblad is the consensus #1 you trade down and take an extra pick.
And I would honestly want them to take Reinhart number 1 anyways just because I think there's a big thing about confidence. Take a guy number one and his confidence sky rockets. He won't lose a lot of confidence if he's not the number one pick, but I still think there is something there to be considered.
Franchises aren't build on defense. Not in the NHL.

Decent chance Vanek said that out of respect of the team or just for the sake of ending speculation. He probably wants to just move on from all things Buffalo.
-
Starting Giggy makes perfect sense. He's playing well, hasn't played much and you avoid the Varlamov drama at least for a game. But maybe the Avs just want to show Varlamov they are confident in him so he doesn't lose his hot streak. Who knows.

I would be pissed if we took Ekblad. Just being honest. You don't draft for need in the NHL, but you have to consider it when you're likely picking player that will be playing immediately. There are also twice as many forward spots in the NHL than there are dmen. So if you take a forward, you can always move them around some.
We took two dmen last year when we already had a pretty good stock of them. We now have Risto, Zadorov, Pysyk, McCabe, Ruhwedel, McNabb, Myers. All legitimate NHL defense prospects/players under the age of 24.
If it's close you take the forward. If Ekblad separates (which I doubt) then you see if the team at 2 will throw you something. Even if it's just an extra 3rd rounder.

Dammit. I just picked Downie up for my fantasy team the other day. He was playing on a line with Duchene and O'Reilly. there goes that idea.
He actually got taken off that line before the trade.

If Moulson can prove to be a guy that will consistently be at or near 30 goals with Hodgson and plays well in other facets of the game, then I'm willing to overpay to a Jason Pominville type deal. If he wants more or doesn't want to go through the rebuild then move him.

Not that domestic violence is funny, but…
:w00t:
Yea, I wasn't making light of the situation. I was being semi-serious with the obvious knowledge that nobody would ever do that. If he truly did this then he doesn't deserve to touch ice again, and that'd be the only way to stop it. I do assume that Giggy will start against Dallas just to give Varlamov time to clear his head, but he'll play while the process goes on.

The Avs maybe trying to open up a little more cap space for a trade for a goalie?
They already had 12 million. This is an unrelated move.
Varlmaov gets 5,000 bail and is given permission to travel. Will reappear in court but currently has a restraining order in place so he can't go near the girlfriend.
She should attend all of the Avs games and sit near the bench.

That's a terrible way for Miller's trade value to skyrocket.
My exact thought.

AVs starting goaltender arrested on domestic violence charges.
2nd degree kidnapping and 3rd degree assault. If this goes through he's done.

I got this via Deadspin, and it slays me for a number of reasons (not the least of which was noted by Deadspin: What's up with being able to print "######" in that context in a newspaper?):
http://blogs.theprov...hat-we-learned/
Joe Thornton would unzip his pants if he scored four goals
Hearing a question to Marleau about Hertl and whether he was showboating, Thornton said:
“Shut up, have you ever played the game?”
When the press turned his way, he then added:
“I’d have my ###### out if I scored four goals. I’d have my ###### out, stroking it.”
OK, then.
EDIT: Ha! The filters here omitted what The Province printed (online)! The word was "C0ck".
Just picking up on that now? That was 20 days ago. Was all over the place.

Even after adding Vanek, they still have almost $13MM in cap space this year. Do you think they are planning on adding more than that much in salary this year?
Tavares, a far better player than Vanek, only makes $5.5MM. I'm getting pretty skeptical that the Islanders are going to offer Vanek a fat extension.
The money that the owner doesn't have to spend now can be used later. Might as well save some money in a deal if you can. The Sabres have no reason not to. So the owner can decide that since he's going to be spending a lot of money this offseason on an extension then he might as well save a little bit now.
-
It also makes it seem less likely that they offer Vanek the moon and the stars to re-sign, innit? I.e. if they were concerned enough to negotiate for $1.3MM in cash relief, they are probably not inclined to offer Vanek a $60MM+ extension.
No, it just means that they want to have more flexibility for the remaining of THIS season. With the cap likely going up a lot next season and the fact that the Isles have a decent chunk of change coming off the book this offseason, they will offer him a good deal.
-
So was it also mentioned here that we retained 19.5% of Vanek's salery? Not such a fleecing after all, but still a good deal I think.

This doesn't change anything for us.

It's an asset that doesn't have a true value until the Islanders declare. It's like playing poker without looking at one of the cards. Like Regier or not, the Sabres need to maximize all assets and opportunities as they present themselves. The trade deadline is an opportunity.
So does this mean you think this was a bad deal? Because the Islanders probably don't do it without this stipulation. It just saves them the immediate embarrassment of absolutely stinking it up and then losing Vanek AND a top 10 pick in one offseason. Teams know what the pick stipulation is.
You don't know what a pick's TRUE value is until either the end of the season or at the draft lottery. That's well after the deadline. Picks are potential with no defined value.
-
Not a big fan of the "protected pick." It makes it more difficult to move at the trade deadline, if the Sabres were so inclined. I would like to see the 2nd round pick upgraded to a 1st if the Islanders defer the #1 to next season.
It doesn't really matter. It's a "win-win" for the Sabres. If it's not top 10 this year then they get a first rounder this year. If it is top 10 then it moves to a "stronger" draft next year. I think the chances of them trading the pick at the deadline are about 5% anyways, so who really cares?
-
Story that Sabres' owner Pegula offered TVanek big money to stay in Buffalo, begs the question Did they do the same for Miller? Answer: No.
-
It's hard to believe Miller doesn't want to go too. I'm sure he'd like to play for a team with a chance of a Cup win, vs sweating it out in Buffalo and watching his prime physical years evaporate fruitlessly, and be squandered on and for a team that will be at or near the bottom of the division for the foreseeable future.
I'm sure Miller wants out just as much but there's two BIG differences between Vanek and Miller: Vanek isn't a goaltender and didn't have a NTC.
-
I "follow" it, but not staying up till 04.00 am if its not the sabres.
Ahhh, didn't see the location. You're missing out. Nothing better than playoff hockey.

Watching now, may be buying his jersey if he resigns as the Isles are my second fave team
Wild were always my second favorite team which is why I want a Pominville jersey. Been a Sabre fan since I was young, but never really understood the game until I was about eight. So in my life as a real fan, Pommer was my favorite and now he's there.
Vanek went for the big hit on his first shift. Nice to see... a little late.

Anybody else going to watch Vanek tonight against the Rangers?
Watching now. Just saw a closeup of him in his new duds and boy it was weird.

On NHL radio today they were joking that maybe having grandparents an hour up the road in Mississauga is enough to keep Moulson around (he has two young kids, one is a newborn I think?).
Buffalo is a great family city. Just not sure if Moulson is the type of guy who just wants to win. He's already spent his entire career in a rebuild. It takes a special kind of guy to not mind going through that again. If he extends in Buffalo there's a solid chance he'll never win while playing at a high level.
-
Did the new CBA do away with the 20% of the cap max?
Well there is a max, but Vanek isn't getting it. So I just pushed it aside.
We traded a malcontent in Vanek for a guy who has scored more goals over the last few years, is less injury prone, and is less than 1/2 of Vanek's cap hit. Plus, we got a 1st and a 2nd. So if there was any way to resign Moulson for a reasonable amount (doubtful, but you never know). And, if the Isles tank with Vanek (doubtful, but you never know). Then, we'd get a cheaper goal scorer who wants to be here plus a nice 1st round pick to add to our surefire top-5 pick.
While I seriously doubt Moulson will want to stick around, I would love to have him. I wonder if something similar to Pominville's deal gets him to stick around. I won't mind overpaying him for multiple reasons:
1. Give Hodgson somebody to build confidence and skill with.
2. Have to get to the cap floor, so it's okay to overpay in a rebuild.
But imagine if Moulson plays at a high-level here and doesn't want to be around? We might get another first and a top prospect out of it. He'll have proven that he isn't just a product of JT.

Kind of surprised it's only four years. And that's pretty cheap for them, too.
