Keep going and get it closer to 100 and then I'll relax. Because that was more what I was calling out. It's somewhere between 40-70. Nowhere near 100.

Koivu (age), Eriksson (talent), Shattenkirk (position), OEL (position), Seguin (still unproven), Backstrom (talent) are not worth more than Vanek.

The point wasn't wrong, but the number was an exaggeration.

Among active players with 200+ career goals, Vanek is 12th in goals per game. He is a veteran, proven, top line goal scorer. Some team will pay him for the maximum term, and in all probability, for the maximum salary.

There is no "maximum salary." Nobody is paying him over $8 mill. I'd expect him to get something like 7 years, $49 mill or 8 and $53 million or so if extending.

  2. With what happened to Scott and the media onslaught of his character this is turning into a witch hunt by the league. Get the bad hits out of the game sure but now all hits are under the microscope. The Sham is going to need a bigger staff.

I think they're honestly more about getting guys like Scott out of the league. And they're not wrong. He has no use on an NHL roster. He has signed his last contract in the NHL.

  3. I don't really care if he said it or not, but I haven't seen that quote anywhere. I just Googled it, too.

He said it. Quoted on twitter. Not in any articles.

Also, Nick Kypreos (yes, the guy who said Darcy is on the hot seat) said this morning that Miller's no-trade list includes all Canadian teams. So that's seven of the eight. Who would be the eighth? Florida?

  4. If the picks pan out, then the Sabres got the best of this deal. I have no confidence that they will though. Outside of the top handful of players in each draft (give or take a few) the draft is a crap shoot. Regier has said that they are building through the draft. I take that to mean there will be very few free agents signed. We're looking at at least 3 years before contending for a playoff spot and it is 50-50 at best that we are not in the playoffs in year 4 from now. All depends on how well the sabres draft 17 & 18 year olds and how they are at 21 or 22.

I've always thought the opposite. I don't think you can necessarily consider the players drafted in the deal. It's the value of the picks. A first rounder has a lot a value. That'd be like us trading Miller for a 5th rounder. At first everybody is upset, but then that player turns into one of the best players in team history. Is that a good trade? No. Say Zemgus turns out to be an absolute bust, is the Gaustad deal no longer a good one?

Also, on the idea of flipping Moulson: if he develops good chemistry with Hodgson and plays well then I say offer him somewhere near what Pominville got (5 years, $25 mill instead of $28 mill). If he takes it then you have somebody to help keep Hodgson playing at a high level, if not you deal Moulson at the deadline and hope some young guys can play with Hodgson.

I just think there needs to be a focus on making sure that there SOME immediate NHL talent to pair with Hodgson and guys like Grigorenko so they can play with confidence and improve over time.

  5. I still believe this team won't be a playoff team at least 3-5 years maybe more. This team right now is just awful. Losing Vanek will hurt Hodgson in the short term. This is only the beginning. Once Miller, Ott and Moulson gets moved you are like an expansion team with a ton of picks.

I think they'll be a playoff team in 4-5 years. I stand by my earlier statement that if they don't botch this rebuild, they'll win a cup within eight years.

Chances are we trade for some NHL-ready prospects with at least two of those guys instead of just picks.

  6. U do realize they will suck next year as well! These youngsters still need developing. See Edmonton. 3-4 years at least.

Yea. I do realize they'll suck next year. Edmonton also ignored defense. We've got talent across the board at all positions. The simple way to look at it is that we don't know their names and they're young so they will all suck. But chances are a few of them really start turning into studs within two years.

The thing about Darcy's comments on Miller is that he contradicted himself. He said he's had no new discussions, but then later he said that he talks about about two thirds of the teams around the league over the course of a week and a lot is discussed and he left it at that. Chances are he's had discussions about Miller. Maybe nothing new. Maybe he's working on a deal, similar to this one, that's been discussed over the course of a few days/weeks/months.

  7. Yes it's great Darcy is loading up on picks but this is being said this is a weak draft class so all these picks don't mean much. Plus by the time u develop any of these players in 3-4 years. This is going to be a very long rebuild!

No no and no. This draft is "weak" because it doesn't have elite talent at the top. Not because it lacks solid talent throughout. Draft picks, especially early ones, ALWAYS mean something.

And there are players coming in now. There will be players coming in each year for the next 5-6 years. The team will likely start improving in two years. So we'll get the benefit of this patience sooner than 3-4 years.

Moulson & Miller for a few prospects? They still need goaltending help the Isles fans I talked to were pissed they traded their 1st round pick and didn't come away with an answer at goalie

I do think the Islanders were honestly the best spot for both Vanek and Miller. Loads of forward prospects and obvious need for both.

  8. Acquiring an excess of young assets/picks is very wise. Hopefully quite a few of these ready/near ready guys really turn it up in the next two years or so. Then we'll be the buyers at the deadline looking for guys like Vanek to acquire. Fun to think about.

I'm not sure Kane is ever leaving there. He's won two cups, a con smyth, and I've already heard the Hawks gm state making Toews and Kane "Blackhwaks for life."

A part of me has absolutely no doubt that Kane will someday play in Buffalo. I don't know if it'll come while he's still playing at a high level, but either way I think it'll happen.

  9. I think Miller is here at least through the Olympics. If he ends up being the USA goalie and plays close to the level he did last time I think that only increases his trade value. Also allows Sabres to sell a ton of Miller team USA jerseys down at the store. Lots of free advertising.

Do people realize that the trade deadline is RIGHT after the Olympics? If we hold him until the Olympics, we'll either trade him during the Olympics which is an EXTREME disservice to him (and in a way the country haha), or at the deadline. I think it makes so much sense to trade him sooner. Let him focus on his new team, the playoffs potentially and the Olympics when they come.

  10. If Moulson were a guy that played on a Stanley Cup team or two, I would think he might consider staying. But considering he's spend his career struggling on the Island then I don't see him staying around.

Also, I don't think the Islanders will be getting out of the first round or two. This pick could be anywhere from 12-22ish.

  11. Its a little bit easier to tank in the NFL when its a guarantee that with the worst record you get the #1 pick and not just the best chance in the lottery.

Its also much easier to have to go through 1 season of being the worst to being right back on track the next year.

The Colts had been one of the best AFC teams since they acquired Peyton Manning in the draft, he was hurt for one full season and they get Luck. Had they not gotten the #1 pick in the draft, they would have still had Peyton Manning and still went on to be one of the better AFC teams. Thats much easier to swallow then a mediocre fringe playoff team for what, 7 years since Drury/Briere, to continuing to get worse and being a complete embarrassment now. The Colts already had a playoff team in place with a good QB playing, they just had to replace 1 player with another to keep going. The Sabres have to do alot more, and need alot of luck/help to get to a point they haven't really been in almost 10 years.

The Colts might be a good comparrison if say next year Crosby goes down and the pens suck to get the #1 pick, and then move Crosby

The Colts aren't nearly the team that the Broncos are, though. The Broncos were a better team for Peyton.

  12. And I'm sure both the franchise and the fans are completely devastated they drafted Luck instead of winning two extra times.

(Yes, I know a generational QB has no hockey equivalent)

Yeap. Bills and Sabres are always a day late and dollar short. Have to bite the bullet on a really bad season to get out of this never-ending funk.

  13. 2 cents on the tanking debate. No pro team is going to voluntarily tank the remainder of a season for the sake of their current team. These are pro athletes who are about money first and titles second. Now, if you're a smart pro that wants both money AND championships, the LAST thing you're going to do is be a part of a concerted (and likely obvious) effort to tank any portion of a season for the benefit of your "current" team. Besides, the draft lottery has basically killed the notion of tanking. If I was a pro, I'd immediatelty ask for a trade if my coach/GM even suggested that we tank for the sake of a pick.

    Part two

Darcy; has to go...NOW. The team cant possibly look any worse and TP has to be viewed as a really out-of-touch owner by keeping him on. The team is risking serious attendance (and revenue) issues next year if they dont make an effort to turn this around now. Simply telling Buffaloians to suffer is not going to work for the Sabres. It works for the Bills for some reason, but I've seen HSBC Arena half empty in the past. Joe Crozier was calling me begging me to renew my STs in 05-06 (I think it was). There's going to be some more begging next year.

    Except the Indianapolis Colts.
