  1. Not saying it will happen but I think Flynn has potential to be one of those late bloomers that could turn into a valuable piece. He has a lot more natural ability them Ellis.

He certainly has the potential. But I'm saying that's what I see him becoming. More the role than the style/skill.

  2. Did I miss the Flynn thread? Should that announcement go here since no one likes him? I would like to know what kind of contract he got.

I like him. Not as anything more than a bottom six player who may never really be a full-timer. I think he'll be a little better version of Matt Ellis.

  3. St. Louis Blues@StLouisBlues 27s

Derek Roy (@Roy9ner) will wear No. 12. #stlblues

No more 9 for Roy... can't wait to play the Blues... kinda hope Roy gets lit up by ANYONE on defense.

For the record, Roy didn't wear 9 on either team he played for last year either. 11 in Dallas, 15 in Vancouver. 9 is retired in Dallas and it's taken by Kassian in Vancouver. Jaden Schwartz (a guy I really like) wears it in St. Louis.

  4. Everyone knew this that watched the playoffs. I'm just smiling because they overpaid to begin with and he is essentially on the shelf until January of his first season. I figured he would be back to start camp, but his rehab seems pretty long for this era of sports medicine.

December. So he'll miss two months.

  5. Hextall now Assistant GM for Flyers.

"To me, [Hextall] is probably the most highly thought-of guy in the League who is not a general manager," Holmgren said. "The fact that he was in the Los Angeles organization, you saw the success he had."

Wanted him to replace Darcy before I realized that Darcy will never be replaced because he has pictures of Pegula cheating on his wife with an African hooker while snorting coke off of Sandusky's forehead.

  6. recapture only goes one way.

Kind of. You can't REGAIN cap, but say you got a cap advantage of $5 mill total but then have a year where you pay less for a higher cap hit then you take the difference. It's a "net" cap advantage, but you can NEVER get cap back.

  7. What's the story with that kid? Discarded by three organizations already, despite obvious talent.

I know he's had concussion problems, but there has to be something else.

Mainly the concussions. I saw one article site attitude issues but I looked around the Internet for a while and found nothing pertaining to that.

  8. I see the Panthers are done with Mueller. Should the Sabres give him a try? He'll be cheap!

Thought they should've last offseason. Thought they should coming into this offseason. But that was when I assumed we'd ship out Vanek and Stafford. Maybe not now.

  9. It's funny how so many are willing to write off the Devils. If I were making the odds I would say the Devils make the playoffs and LL is executive of the year.

The Devil's have known for awhile now that Kovalchuk wanted to go home to play. The Devil's target Clowe and Ryder, two veteran forwards as well as adding a quality backup goaltender in Schneider. i don't believe the Devils were caught off-guard for one second.

Just because they weren't caught off guard doesn't mean it doesn't hurt them. Japan knew those nukes were coming, didn't help them.

Who scores for them? And if Marty Brodeur has another bad year they're doomed. And I don't think they'll replace him as the starter no matter what (except injury) this year. Schneider will get his time when Marty retires after this season.

  10. Long story short, they paid him more in real cash than they did in cap dollars. That balance must be restored, spread over the timeframe of the original contract.

And after all of this, I'm brought back to the original question from last offseason of why they didn't choose to forfeit that 29th overall draft pick. Now they're very likely to be losing a lottery pick. Then again, some of the talking heads idiotically think the league may now cancel out that punishment. I actually wouldn't put it past them now that they've let a guy "retire" so he could go and play in another league.

I knew they'd regret it the second they didn't give up that pick. I hope Matteau is an absolute flop so they can feel it even more. So dumb. Maybe they thought they'd be able to get out of the deal.

  11. I see, thanks, well done.

So, this applies if there is a trade...why?

    I had another question, too...

Oh! Is the league collecting money here (hence the "pool" nomenclature) or does this figure only count against the team's cap?

The figure only counts against the cap. The team doesn't have to pay it since they technically already paid it. It's just the cap hit that counts.

The way it works via trade is that you have to pay the cap advantage built up in the years PRIOR to the trade over the remaining years of that players current deal. HOWEVER, if the player STILL has years where his salary is higher than his cap hit but he leaves THAT team before his contract is up then that team will have to pay that cap benefit.

That's why Vancouver wants teams to give them cash in Luongo deals to offset that.

  12. Anyone care to share with the class a comprehensive explanation of "recapture"?

Let's see if I can explain it in parts:

It only applies to deals that are signed by players under the age of 35 AND are seven years or more in length.

It also only applies to deals that have certain years in which a players salary number is different than his cap hit.

The years in which the player's salary exceeds the cap hit are added to a "pool." This pool only has to be paid off by the team if the player retires or leaves the team before the final years of the deal. This pool will be spread over the remaining years of a player's deal after he leaves the team.

(If there is/are season(s) in which the cap hit exceeds the salary then that can reduce the "pool." IF these seasons pass with the player still on the team).

Example: A player signs a 7 year, $49 mill deal.

    The breakdown goes as follows:

Year one: $9 mill salary, $7 mill cap hit. ($2 mill difference)

Year two: $9 mill salary, $7 mill cap hit. ($2 mill difference ADDED to the $2 mill difference from year one; $4 mill total)

Year three: $8 mill salary, $7 mill cap hit. ($1 mill difference ADDED to the $4 mill difference from first two years; $5 mill total)

Years four/five: $7 mill salary, $7 mill cap hit (no difference so no money added to the pool)

Years six/seven: $4.5 mill salary, $7 mill cap hit.

If this player retires after year three, then the team will be charged with $5 mill against the cap spread out over four years (the remaining length of the player's contract).

If you want an example from Buffalo's end, we have a PRIME candidate in Christian Ehrhoff.

Ehrhoff, in his two seasons here has already built up a "cap advantage" (that's what they call the difference that's seen between the salary and the cap hit) for us of $10 mill. If we trade him right now then we have a cap hit just over $1 mill for the next eight years because of this.

His cap advantage will build up NEVER be higher because his salary is always at or under his $4 mill cap hit for the remainder of the contract.

BUT his cap advantage won't start going down until 2017 when his salary dips below his cap hit. If he retires/is cut/traded in the offseason prior to the 2017 season, then we are on the hook for $10 mill over four years.

  13. This whole thing is downright dirty. The NHL has just offered up a very simple out for every single contract. The second he signs with SKA, NHL contracts officially mean nothing.

That "loophole" has ALWAYS been there. Mutual agreements by the team/player to voluntarily retire have always voided contracts. Stars usually don't use it, though. Has nothing to do with him signing overseas.

  14. I've always thought that the point system should be a 3-2-1 system. Losers don't deserve any points. Three points for a regulation win, two points for an OT win and (if you HAVE to have the stupid shootout) then one point for an SO win.

This would also make the scenarios way more fun to think about. And could you imagine at the end of the year when a team NEEDS three points to clinch a spot or avoid elimination? Boy would that be a fun regulation to watch.

  15. Andreychuk hosed again. Not really sure if those elected are really worthy over him. This class seems pretty weak.

Who deserves it more: Andreychuk or Mogilny? Andreychuk lasted longer in the league, but Mogilny was more than a point per game player. Had nearly as many playoff points in 40 less games. Mogilny had two 100 point seasons and a 76 goal season. Nearly five more points per season.

  16. Well maybe mcbain will surprise us but i doubt it.

And if the plan is to tank, moven some more D-men and make room for zadarov - risto to both play.

Zero chance Zadorov plays this season. MAYBE a couple games at the end of the season. But he's a very raw product who will take at least one year two develop, maybe two.

I don't think McBain will be in the NHL next year.

Think Myers, Ehrhoff, Weber, Pysyk, Ristolainen and Ruhwedel/McNabb as the top six. Also a decent chance that we deal one of these guys and/or McBain as we look for forwards. Have to think Vanek and or Miller will be dealt for young, NHL-ready forwards. Thought Nino would be perfect for that but he's off to Minny.

  17. Zadarov says he is NHL ready and i believe him :D

Anyone else see that spark in his eyes when he said he loves to hit.

Darcy said he won't be in the NHL this year, and Zadorov certainly isn't ready.

Ristolainen might be and Darcy indicated he's on track to be

  18.

    You forgot to include

"If you are one of those people that don't approve of anything the sabres do unless it fits your narrow, inexperienced expectations, then you will disapprove of what they did today"

    Of course.

But I'm definitely not one of those people. Jason Pominville is my favorite Sabre that I've ever watched in my time as a sabres fan (12 years or so) and I was extremely pleased with that move.

I was VERY excited about Zack Kassian but love that trade.

I was EXTREMELY pleased with the picks of Grigorenko and McCabe.

  19. The first two picks would've been solid and I would've been happy with them if I thought they fit a need. ONE would have been okay but both? With guys like Nichushkin, Mantha, Shinkaruk ALL on the board?
