  1.

I'm confused. The isles can defer the pick until next year?

Yes. Was reported a day or two after the deal. They can defer it if it's top 10. I assume they won't unless it's top 5. I don't see them risking the embarrassment of losing a true elite player next year if they continue to go back downward.

  2.

Not one of those stat numbers impress me.

Each of those players are playing in different environments. None of them has the ability to truly lead on their own, which is what Buffalo needs. Regardless of their personal stats season wise, Buffalo needs elite game changers, not support players in line ups with elite talent.

Buffalo needs a lot more than a leader. And nobody in this league leads on their own.

It's irrelevant what players do elsewhere, though. I don't take numbers of guys with other teams as a negative. Different situations, different minutes. No toxic environment = obvious chance to flourish. A guy like Pominville is showing his true potential when not asked to do everything. Fun to see.

  3. He's the best of their forwards that would be even remotely tradable. Assuming that a) they still have bad blood with him over the year it takes until he can be traded (doubtful) and b) Varlomov get's an actual punishment and not a professional athlete punishment,

Pretty sure all parties are over that whole thing.

  4. The assault charges against Semyon Varlamov ARE being filed. He faced up to two years in a county jail if convicted. The kidnapping charges have been dropped due to lack of proof. He is expected to appear in court in early December.

It is a third degree assault charge. If he is convicted, he also faces potential deportation.

  5. Sabres have been getting some help lately as far as Tank Nation goes. The teams right above them in the standings have gone on some mini winning streaks.

Edmonton has won 2 in a row

Florida has won 2 in a row

Calgary picked up a point last night and won 2 in a row before that

Philly has gone 5-1-2 in their last 8

Ny Isles have been bad lately but that's more than ok

Columbus picks up a win last night.

No, it's not too early to watch out of town games as they relate to the draft :P

A loss to Philly in regulation tonight almost puts them out of reach already which is crazy considering Philly was only a point or two ahead about a week ago. A lot of the teams immediately in front of us play each other in the coming days which means somebody has to get two points and possibly a point for the loser. We could very well fall even farther if they don't steal a game.

The Panthers and Oilers play tonight, and then the Flames and Panthers tomorrow. Panthers play the Flyers Monday, too.

  6. My guess is between 55 and 60 but I would certainly sign up for 50. That shoul be good enough for last and thus a top 2 pick.

Most likely. I'm more focused on what we'll be doing compared to other teams just ahead of us. In all likeliness, it'd be at least three weeks of very good hockey before we're even out of the bottom four or five.

  7. Boy was I wrong about Filppula and Hudler. I thought they would be mediocre outside of Detroit.

Hudler has 21 points in 21 games this year and was solid last year. Filppula has 15 points in 18 games and has really picked up since Stamkos left.

What a game in Winnipeg tonight. Bryan Little scores his 12th of the year to tie it with less than six seconds to go. The goaltending for both of these teams is a mess, though. Winnipeg believes in Pavelec, but he's horrible. Jonas Hiller will end up with one of these two teams or the Islanders this offseason. Or at the deadline.

  8. The margin of error is thin, no doubt. But I don't think we sniff 500 hockey the rest of the way. So there :P

Going through the schedule and basically giving them wins against the league's worst teams and then some points sprinkled in elsewhere still only puts us at about 50 points.

  9. Tough to say at this point. For what it's worth those two are pretty much the consensus top 2 but i watch dal colle regularity and would be happy to have him in our system. I think reinhart being a centre also really helps his stock.

Are you saying that Reinhart and Dal Colle are pretty much the consensus top two forwards? Because that's not true. I do think I'd have Dal Colle as the second forward, but he's not the consensus guy behind Reinhart. Some have Bennett, Nylander and another name or two all in the mix for that spot.

  10. Here is a question if Oilers offered their number one pick this year for him, do you make the trade?

Yes. Because that would give us a pretty solid shot at getting one and two. You take Ekblad over Pysyk.

  11.

Thank you ever so much for taking what I said and twisting it inside your mind to add nothing to conversation. Thank for insulting my intelligence and thank you for tossing out the idea that every draft is the exact same.

Last year we couldn't move up to 1st, PERIOD.

This year if we don't draft 1st I don't think the drop off is as much as others, PERIOD.

Which was my original point, thank you.

I should also add that if we drafted 1 or 2 and Reinhart is there, I would take him.

I think the reason people are confused is because you literally said "drafting 3-5 would actually be better." Which directly means that you think having those picks this year is better than having the first pick.

  12. Good time for someone other than me to list the last 15-20 #1 and #5 picks so we can compare.

    1st:

    MacKinnon

    Yakupov

    Nugent-Hopkins

    Taylor Hall

    Tavares

    Stamkos

    Kane

    Erik Johnson

    Crosby

    Ovechkin

    MA Fleury

    Nash

    Kovalchuk

    Dipietro

Patrik Stepan (only went first because the Sedin's refused to go anywhere but one place)

    Lacavalier

    Joe Thornton

    5th:

    Lindholm

    Morgan Reilly

    Ryan Strome

    Niederreiter

    Brayden Schenn

    Luke Schenn

    Alzner

    Kessel

    Carey Price

    Blake Wheeler

    Vanek

    Ryan Whitney

    Stanislav Chistov

    Torres

    Tim Connolly

    Vitali Vishnevsky

    Eric Brewer

Best player selected 3-5 in the last 17 drafts:

    Seth Jones (3rd)

    Galchenyuk (3rd)

    Huberdeau (3rd)

    Ryan Johansen (4th)

    Duchene (3rd)

    Pietrangelo (4th)

    Turris (3rd)

    Toews (3rd)

    Carey Price (5th)

    Andrew Ladd (3rd)

    Vanek (5th)

    Bouwmeester (3rd)

    Weiss (4th)

    Gaborik (3rd)

Sedin (3rd) (only went 3rd because of the twins refusal mentioned earlier)

    Bryan Allen (4th)

    Luongo (4th)

Based on that, only five of the last 17 drafts have seen a player drafted from 3-5 turn out better than the first pick (Gaborik > Dipietro, Vanek > MA Fleury (debatable), Sedin > Stepan (rigged), Galchenyuk > Yakupov (still early), Toews > Erik Johson).

  13. Must See: Inside Hockey: Pat LaFontaine (extended version) 5:59

Video: Inside Hockey: Pat LaFontaine embraces new gig with Sabres

Pat LaFontaine was once the face of the Buffalo Sabres and now he's the man in charge.

Hockey Night in Canada's Elliotte Friedman sat down with LaFontaine in his Inside Hockey segment about the former star centre's new role as the Sabres' president of hockey operations.

LaFontaine shared his appreciation for the city of Buffalo, the search for the club's next general manager, and his plans for organization.

Also said in this interview: LaFontaine is willing to trade Miller BEFORE a new GM is hired if teams call.
