  1. Yep they're a mess right now. Once they get some injured D back things may get better though. If the pick is in the top 10 and they defer to next year it may burn them in the long run. With Charles Wang running an 'internal budge' for his team, who knows if they add anything in the offseason and they likely lose Vanek. From the sounds of this years and next years drafts it may be a blessing in disguise we get next years pick which could end up being another top 10 selection.

Well I don't think it matters if it's a top 10 pick this year or next year. I haven't heard much that separates this year's draft and next year's outside of McDavid, but the Isles won't be the worst team in 2015 so it doesn't matter. I'm hoping their pick ends up being 11th overall this year.

  2. I really struggled with the Hurley pick when it was made but he's an interesting player. He doesn't even start college for another year.

I hope he makes me look idiotic for grumbling so much when we took him.

He's a long-term stash guy. Hopefully the team will be competing by the time he comes around. I'm really excited about him.

  3. The Sabres are on pace for 30.2 points. The NHL-leading Ducks have 29 points.

It's strange to think: "When will we get (x) points?" When will we cross 20? When will we even have 30 points? I don't see them actually being below 50 points, but you have to wonder if they will end up there. January sets up for a patented late season run to another mediocre pick. Devils, Canes (x2), Panthers (x2), Blue Jackets (x2), Caps (x2), Flyers. While you can say easily say that those teams are better than us (except maybe Florida), they're bound to pull off a few victories in there.

  4. EJ is rusty, that's expected, but his level of suckitude today also has me worried. Part of it is the conservative play calling.

I'm not sold on EJ being our franchise guy

He's been terrible all year. Had one good drives against Carolina. Has been terrible otherwise. He's not an NFL QB.

  5. Me personally after watching the Sabres blue and gold with Devine. Devine seemed set at Risto at 8 and then another scout mentioned Zadorov at 16. I'm thinking the scouting staff has a huge input in these picks. I highly doubt Regier is watching a lot of these kids on tape.

I think most people that have watched that see clearly that Darcy isn't doing the drafting anymore.

  6. Nashville is a good team that can't score goals (they're 24th in the NHL in goals/game). We have Matt Moulson to trade. Plus Ennis. Plus Stafford (yes, I know we all hate Stafford but to a non-Buffalonian, his stats would actually look good).

There's a trade to be made there.

Moulson for their 1st. Get it done. I have to think that there is a pretty decent list of teams that would offer their first rounder for Moulson right now. More likely teams that feel like they're contenders (like the Rangers, Kings, Bruins). Might be able to get a decent prospect out of Philly in their search for more scoring.

The tone of your posts...sigh. Maybe it's just an interpretation thingy. Pay attention all you want but outright celebrating when one of our former players gets hurt?

Ah, I didn't see his first post as celebrating necessarily. More as just noting that the trade is looking good for us. I normally root for former players. Especially Pominville.

  7.

I can't tell you how much I hate this. Why do you care what happens to Vanek after he leaves? You sound like a jilted lover. Let it go already.

A lot of us are actual fans of the game. We care about more than just the Sabres. I also enjoy seeing guys that have been around here for a while play elsewhere. It's fun to see how their style changes. People sound so bitter when they are so against paying attention to players that leave the organization.

  8. The sheer stupidity of some these arguments... And I dislike Regier ... However when he has had draft picks in rounds 1-3 he has found good players. Haven't won a cup? How many cups does Hasek have? What about Crosby? Stamkos? Dumbest thing ever... Measuring cups to draft picks.

Well Crosby has one and Hasek has two so I'm not really sure what you're getting at... One cup would be enough for Regier to be the greatest GM in team history.

  9. Lots of scuttlebutt that Eberle is the young star the Oilers have decided to jettison to fix their team and it's going to happen soon.

We need to be all over that.

They'll almost 100% demand a first rounder this year as part of a bigger package. No thanks. I love Eberle but no thanks.

If we could pull something off like Ehrhoff (or Myers or Pysyk) plus a 2nd rounder (or 2), and another prospect then I'd be all over it.

  10.

With the upcoming Ott, Miller, Moulson trades, plus the potential trades of Stafford and maybe someone young like Ennis or Myers, I'm hoping we get at least one more 2015 1st round pick (and hopefully a few more 2015 picks).

Like I said, we loaded up on picks last year (in a strong draft year) and it wouldn't hurt to skip a year before seriously loading up again. We don't want everyone on our team to be the exact same age and we can target the next strong draft.

I hope we get some prospects and 2015 picks as well. But I don't really care if we have picks in 14 or 15.

I'm not saying you're of this thinking, but a lot of people want picks in 2015 because they think it's a great draft. Really, McDavid is the only reason this line of thinking exists. And it doesn't matter if you have 10 first rounders (obviously slightly enhances your chances in the lottery, but history suggests you're not getting that pick unless you're in the top two lottery slots). There is no sense in building up picks in hopes of a trade up either because nobody is trading the first pick of McDavid for anything. Not even ten first rounders.

    So trade them sooner.

    Mhm.

  11. I can't get worked up about the lack of success Darcy has had with mid-to-late round picks., 2nd round picks hit at maybe a 25% rate, or once every 4 years. 3rd round picks are near 10%, so once in 10 years, 4th round picks and later are even less. I think it's pretty clear that we've hit on 2nd round and later picks at at least the normal rate.

Darcy did have a really bad dry spell for a good bit in the 1st round. That, and a lack of 2nd round picks for a few years has hurt this team.

Meh. I don't like the "nobody else is doing well there so it's okay." This debate came up with the Bills about needing a wide receiver that doesn't care that you've got somebody draped all over you. When was the last time that team had a receiver who makes the catch when somebody is all over him?

It'd be nice to have a GM who finds a few legitimate studs in the mid-to-late rounds despite the fact that not many other teams do.

  12. You do know that Ramsay played for the Sabres for 10+ years, right?

    EDIT:

    Damn you, JJ ...

    :P

Yeap. Was talking more about Dineen. I know a few people complained when he was having success in Florida saying how we missed an opportunity by not giving him the HC job.

  13. Start in 2005 and work your way forward. I started with that year because it is the first post lockout season with the major rule changes and marked a major shift in how guys have to play. Look at Rounds 1-3.

    2005: 13 Marek Zagrapan, 48 Philipp Gogulla, 87 Marc-Andre Gragnani

2006: 24 Dennis Persson, 46 Jhonas Enroth, 57 Mike Weber,

2007: 31 T. J. Brennan (became Gustav Possler pick), 59 Drew Schiestel, 89 Corey Tropp

2008: 12 Tyler Myers, 26 Tyler Ennis, 44 Luke Adam, 81 Corey Fienhage

2009: 13 Zack Kassian, 66 Brayden McNabb, 104 Marcus Foligno (Sorry Foligno was 4th round had to fix the wiki entry)

    2010: 23 Mark Pysyk, 68 Jerome Gauthier-Leduc, 75 Kevin Sundher, 83 Matt MacKenzie

    2011: 16 Joel Armia, 77 Daniel Catenacci

2012: 12 Mikhail Grigorenko, 14 Zemgus Girgensons, 44 Jake McCabe, 73 Justin Kea

    2013: 8 Rasmus Ristolainen, 16 Nikita Zadorov, 35 J.T. Compher, 38 Connor Hurley, 52 Justin Bailey, 69 Nicholas Baptiste

    2014: 2first rounders, 3second rounders, 1third rounder

This indicates to me that since 2005 Darcy has done well at drafting NHL players in the first 3 rounds. Now how good those players were in the NHL is another story but we can't honestly say he sucks at 2nd/3rd round picks.

Edit: Kevin Devine being around has probably helped Darcy a ton but I can't separate that out because I wasn't in the room for anything outside the Zadorov pick which we all know was Devine.

2006 he got a guy who might be a solid backup at best (we have no idea what he'll do as a starter) and a guy in Mike Weber who has been HORRIBLE this year. 2007 he got two big busts and then a kid in Tropp that we don't know about yet. 2008 and 2009 look good so far. 2010 looks good with Pysyk but is still unknown. The rest are complete unknowns.

So he had two good years, and two bad years with the rest being too recent to judge.

  14. Luckily for us this entire argument of Darcy being good or bad at drafting is irrelevant, as its been stated several times now Divine is the one calling the shots in that department.

My only question is how far does that go back? He's been the director of scouting for some time but i feel like this was a development that came when Pegula expanded the scouting department a few years back. I like our recent picks, much more than perrsonn and zagrapan.

I wonder the same about how long Devine has been calling the shots.

But it's also irrelevant if you're picking first overall. Unless there's a huge debate, that's an easy pick. This year the obvious pick seems to be Reinhart (for us, Ekblad for some others). Next year will be McDavid.

  15. I think that was only because Colorado had the top pick. Any other team and it's McKinnon, no brainer. But the Avs are so deep down the middle that it lead some to believe the Avs may go D. Obviously didn't happen as I think everyone and their grandmother had McKinnon as the top pick.

Here's a ranking from April... http://nhlnumbers.com/2013/4/13/2013-nhl-draft-rankings-seth-jones-valeri-nichushkin That's the consensus at that time and Jones was the leader. A lot of people were drooling over Jones. McKinnon flew onto the scene when people started talking about him taking a road that resembled Crosby's, but it died down a bit when Jones was tearing everything in his path apart.

  16. Well in two years we can discuss Hurley (maybe, he is probably 3years away) Compher, McCabe, Baptiste, Possler. Now not all of these guys are 2nd rounders and some may not make the team but they have at least all shown something since the draft. Hurley being the biggest question mark but also the youngest... (Hurley is under 2 months older than Reinhart).

Also in 2009, 2010, 2011 the Sabres did not have a 2nd round pick to use. The last 2nd rounder prior to this year was 2008 and Luke Adam who for now is a good AHL guy. In 2012 we took Jake McCabe. So as much as I hate Darcy, he has done okay at drafting second round guys. Brennan and Shiestal being the exceptions although Brennan got us Possler's pick in the 5th round of 2013.

Darcy has moments but I don't think he is capable of putting it all together. I want him to prove me wrong.

I'm not sure that any of what you've said justifies this statement. Adam being a good AHL player is irrelevant. While the AHL is important for development, you're not drafting for it. We have no idea what McCabe will be (even though I'm extremely high on him). He has been terrible at drafting in general.

  17. Here's a good article from future considerations. Talks about players to watch and discusses the potential first overall pick and how there is no concensus. Also gives a troubling quote about Reinhart from a Western scout and indicates this is the first time since 2007 there isn't really a consensus at this point. Keep in mind though that Patrik Kane went first overall in '07.

    http://futureconside...no-1-wide-open/

Last year at this time, there was a lot of debate between Seth Jones and Nathan McKinnon. Sure, they're on another level but there wasn't a SUPER consensus. When the Avs won the pick, TSN ran a feature basically saying that thought Jones was headed to Colorado.

  18. Yeah, I shouldn't have said stars. Probably more along the line of their early draft picks over the last 4-5 years. Too much youth, not enough QUALITY veterans. Boyes has 5 goals, but his stats are deceiving.

Boyes is getting big minutes on an NHL team which really is a terrible joke.

  19. You're probably right, not with us. But I see him dealing one of his young stars. New owner is making his presence felt along with the minority owner. They're not going to be as patient, they had a closed door management meeting after the game last night.

Who do you define as their young stars? I only think they have two on that team -- Hubby and Barkov. Neither of them are going anywhere. Bjugstad and Kulikov could be considered to be good young assets. I think Kulikov will be out of there shortly. Maybe Shawn Mathias, too.

I would say that Brian Campbell would be likely to be dealt but his contract is terrible. He's still a very good defenseman, though, so it's possible he could be moved. Versteeg would've been moved forever ago if his contract wasn't so bad. They're really in a bad spot, because their few tradeable assets have long-term contracts and are overpaid.

Versteeg would be moveable if he was in the last year of his deal, and Campbell would be tradeable if he made about $1.5 million less.

  20. So if we trade Girgensons and Ristolainen to someone they will take Stafford as well because he is the spoiled milk that comes with your Filet Mignon and Lobster dinner.

Stafford without a ton of added crap is untradeable.

I think we could get a draft pick for Stafford straight up. Maybe we'd have to eat some cap, maybe we wouldn't. But somebody out there would be willing to at least toss a 5th rounder at us for him. He's a former 30 goal scorer who has some legitimate talent that seems to be hidden beneath layers and layers of laziness.

  21. No it is not true. There are times where there is simply no taker at any price out there. This is especially true this season with the cap dropping and stafford being 4million in salary. Also guys get waived because no one wants them, thats why Kaleta made it to the AHL. No one wants him. You could waive Stafford right now and no one would claim him. Sometimes players are untradeable and it is painfully obvious no one is interested in Stafford at this moment in time.

    Read my edit.

  22. Not true.

No, it's true. Just depends on what you want and if it is worth it. Realistically, the Sabres could move Stafford if they were willing to take something like a 5th rounder. But there's no point in making that move. He serves more of a purpose in Buffalo in filling the lineup and helping them stay at the cap floor during the rebuild.

There are some guys/contracts that you'd have to add more to make the deal enticing for them (for instance, giving a team a decent prospect so they'll take on a bad contract).

I'm not saying every player has positive value. There are a lot of guys who have negative value, but if you compensate with enough positive value assets then you can entice certain teams to take anybody.
