Fixing the Defense - Maybe not as easy as you think
Randall Flagg replied to GASabresIUFAN's topic in The Aud Club
I would expose Joki before Borgen. I see good things when I watch Borgen -
That was the other problem I had with this article yesterday. At Jack's peak, I saw maybe the 7th best center in the league, while there are 5 other positions I'm not opening it again because it's junk, but didn't they imply that it didn't just mean 4 picks, but also could include first round type prospects or players that have hit heights you'd expect from first rounders?

I got 15. Didn't miss any of the ones that happened since I became a fan, didn't know most of the ones before that

"With the way it's going down the tube so quickly between both parties and how public Eichel's disdain of his and his team's situation has gotten — through his own words, various media reports, and the often trustworthy "where there's smoke there's usually fire" philosophy — " That is exactly what they are doing lol. This is ridiculously stated

That seems like a bad article. There doesn't appear to be a lot of meat on the bone, and it reads like it was written by someone who is not that well versed in hockey

I've never seen someone so consistently strawman a topic as you do goalies We all like Ullmark. There is a 20 point gap in their save percentages. by point, I mean hundredths This is the same gap that separates the best goalie in the NHL from the 25th best goalie in the NHL. It's the same gap that separates the 13th best goalie in the NHL from the 40th. Ullmark is 18th in save percentage, Carter is 57th behind the same team. This would imply that Carter is the 4th worst backup in the league, which is jarring since his starter is at least capable of average play. Is it wrong for us to want better from the backup position, when our starter is so injury prone and so the backup is guaranteed siginifcant stretches of hockey?

He did remove Adam Fox from my trade too, and I think Igor is going to be great.

Very true. I do remember Isaiah bobbling a few in 2018 though, so we might be sacrificing sure hands for that explosiveness. Not that I wanted Roberts back, even though I like him - the $ didn't make sense this offseason

So Beniers and who else are top 3?
-
Here's the thing. The Sabres usually have 1 or 2 things that work well in a given season. They typically spend the following offseason completely dismantling those things for no reason whatsoever, so that they can whip up something shoddy and hope that when 12 different things get the best case scenario, they can flirt with a playoff spot. Even if they keep the pieces of the thing that worked, they rarely go back to it for years until pieces have been irreparably broken Well, we are being saved from our own stupidity this summer. Because nothing works this year! Maybe with no outlet for our self-destructive tendencies, we stumble into something competent?

GDT 3/22/21 Sabres at NY Rangers 7pm MSG, WGR550
Randall Flagg replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
The Rangers are incredibly flawed, but we made them look like the Globetrotters. Some of those passing plays were jaw dropping. When was the last time we saw a Sabres team that could look like that? Cozens struggled, but it's still fun to see him getting these minutes, and I've never been more sure of a prospect becoming a very good NHL player. Bryson struggled again too. That was a sick breakaway though. Part of the reason the Rangers were so good in transition was that they know how to hit the line at varying speeds and in different planes to create a bunch of different passing lanes. We are so cautious and scared, that backing off in the face of this gives them acres of space. The Sabres all hit the line in the same plane at the same speed, and never have anywhere obvious to go with the puck, even if it's an odd man rush. The Rangers always had 2 wide open options, the Sabres rarely have a guy you can even hope has a 50% chance at collecting a pass. Are we just dumb? -

Welcome to the wonderful world of Sabres backup goaltending! If Lalime had won just 6 of his 21 starts, 6 is all I ask, 6, that team makes the playoffs in 08-09 -
I like that Boston deal.

Zegras, Drysdale and Gibson Kaprizov, Greenway Dumba, several firsts Pasta/McAvoy, Studnicka, Frederic, Coyle, and that goalie prospect Horvat, Boeser, Hoglander, Schmidt, first Larkin, Bertuzzi, Raymond, Hronek, first this year Barzal, Pulock, Pelech, Sorokin

Zibanejad, Lafreniere, Fox, and Georgiev. Or Strome, Lafreniere, Fox, Kakko, and Shestyorkin

Couldn't agree more on all counts, and welcome back stranger

We did. A few snippets from when we hired Dan: "It was awesome actually. Hearing slap down some analytics while propping up others. Getting a swipe in that a shot from a guy like Rivet or him doesn't have the same value as a shot from Crosby. Highly recommend everyone listen to it. It's informative and rather comical also and was a great listen." "This was a great interview--on both sides. Coller did a nice job and DDB answered questions with a lot of insight." "I admit guilt to think DD was an empty suit but his interview was compelling. Certainly way more cerebral than most here gave him credit for. I think I like DD." "Enjoyed the presser. Something about his countenance appeals to me; like he's ready to tell a joke or that he knows something but he's just not gonna let you in on it just yet. Anyway, nice first impression." I can't find others right now, but people were thrilled about his discussion of "playing with pace," I remember reading that multiple times. "High tempo" and the like. "Finally!!!" Then with Phil, here's a sample: "Love that he stated that people will love his brand of hockey...that's all I needed to hear" "5 man ATTACK!!!!!!" "Our defense will be very involved in the play" - Housley -> "Thank the baby jesus" "Attacking as a 5 man unit, love it" "Give the people what they want " "This might be the stupid Buffalo optimism speaking, but listening to Phil makes me think Bogo is gonna play like a top-4 dman. Mark me down as OUT of the bunker." "Housely! Yes!" "Give them responsibility........jack will love Phil! Loved that line" "We'll see in the next couple of seasons if it pans out, but I'm stoked! I like it so far." I remember actually writing a post to the effect of "remember guys, we loved what Dan said about his hockey system/style right away, this means nothing til we see it" haha Though I will say that some people thought Dan was dry.

31 Thoughts Podcast Opening Segment on the Sabres
Randall Flagg replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
I thought for sure I had him beat on Trubisky. I was over here posting before there were any replies on TBD. When I went to click send, I checked to see if there were any "1 new post in thread" popups that always hit when you're on a page while someone new replies. Nothing. Nothing was there. Glory was mine. I clicked "post" and Brawndo's post announcing the signing popped into place, nice and neatly, right above mine. -
Juicy. Interesting breakdown and fascinating skating
