Sabres Cap Situation Sticky Again Next Season- Youth vs. Cap Floor

I don't think there is a better veteran RW on the market. He'd have the respect of every kid on the room. No Stanley cup next year, but I'd like him in the Sabres culture.- 48 replies

Vickrey was just a thought. Tulips don't work as they are multiple. What we have here is an art auction with secret bids where Detroit presumably has a chance to match. You can't say there is a speculative bubble, he's just one guy and there is no presumed resale value. (just now thinking about my nearly full set of 1958 Washington Senators Tops baseball cards that my mom threw out when I left home).

Spend your money on a center, Chuck.

That's why I asked your preference. You'd like to see him in Buffalo. I wasn't sure.

So if the Sabres sign Babcock it is a failure? And if they don't sign Babcock, that too, is a failure? What exactly would you like to see, PA? Which way would you like to see them fail? :P Preference? Except this it isn't a commodity market. It is one guy. Vickrey Auction would be more appropriate. There is no speculation in an auction. The final price is the price.

Babcock's teams have been remarkably consistent. There is no other active coach with more influence on the way the game is played today. There is nothing irrational, or overstated, about Babcock's contributions and consistency in the game, and just watch. Most teams coaching moves this off-season revolve around Babcock's decision. Now you could argue that no coach is worth this amount of attention. But it is more akin to ignoring Apple in your Nasdaq portfolio, you could do okay without Apple, but you can't ignore Apple's impact on the market while its fundamentals look solid.

I think we get it. You want Bylsma. Honestly though, come free agent time I could see the best vets wanting one last go around with Babcock. That's value added.wherever he is hired. I would much rather see Bylsma in Toronto than Babcock. (Seeing I'm not actually thinking that odds are Babcock lands in Buffalo.)

Minimum wage earners tend to spend almost all income locally. The best way to stimulate local demand is to put money in the pockets of low wage earners. There is a much higher consumer demand effect by bumping up the bottom, than by cutting taxes at the top. McDonalds in the long run might do much better selling sandwiches when their consumer base experiences the income effect. Demand goes up.

For the last 6 years Crosby/Malkin by far.

 Hmmm? We are talking about the benefits of a stacked roster and Bylsma vs Babcock. (cough ...Crosby.....cough Malkin) I don't really find a need to talk up Babock - other than to say, that he's a guy that's managed to keep his job. College free agent prizes? The club is actually in a position where they have to conserve the contracts they offer.

No doubt, lots of talent. Presidents Trophy that year. A better point is how competitive Babcock has kept Detroit year to year.
-
Not really. Especially looking at the defense. There is nobody on that blue-line I would consider a star, nor in goal.. Tatar, Nyquist, and Abdelkater (sp?) are pretty much farm-raised products that have plugged into a core, none of them particularly scary on their own - but as always with Detroit, the whole is greater than the parts. That's Babcock. 43 wins was a pretty impressive season for a team I thought had little chance of going far in the playoffs.

Great, we are going to have humans walking around with software viruses because they uploaded porn to their bio-drives.

Did you just compare Mike Babcock to Zack Kassian? :)

I never thought that Bylsma asked for a particularly heavy game. If anything, when Therrien was dumped and they pulled Bylsma out of the AHL, the biggest thing he really did was loosen the reigns. Therrien had the Pens, with all that talent, trapping and playing a defensive game. Bylsma opened the Pens game up. It included opening up some stretch passes, less concern on the D end, and really more of a focus on springing Crosby and Malkin rather than trying to dictate the pace of the game. I don't think Bylsma is the right coach for a young team. He, if I remember correctly, never much switched his lines. For better or worse, the Sabres are going to have to experiment with a lot of combinations in the next two years. My bet is he ends up in Philly.

Thanks.

I actually think it might be Murray that actually lands him.

Interesting stuff. By "personnel problem" did he mean a lack of talent, or a problem with personalities?
