  1. That saying only works because you only need to spend an hour with her max.

With a drafted QB, you're stuck with that butter face for multiple years... and your buying them a new house... and all your friends have to deal with the consequences of your desperate decision. It's a bit different.

That's the EJ Manuel pick in a nutshell. Buddy Nix was so desperate to draft a QB as part of his parting legacy that he convinced the team to take a bad one in a bad draft year.

EJ's college stats were pretty darn good - that's why you really never know.

  2. The most (standard? ... it has been a long time since we had one ... when we moved to NS we bought our house for significantly less than what we sold ours in Toronto for and we had paid that down very significantly ... we were blessed / fortunate in that regard) common in Canada is a 25 year amortization period, but the typical term is 5 years.  Then you refinance and technically get a new mortgage.

Like I said, it has been a while, but that is what I remember.

My parents had a 30 year mortgage.  I do know that such things do not exist in Canada anymore and haven't for years and years.

That kinda sucks for the buyer if you originally locked into a low interest rate and the rates are climbing. Plus, who pays the closing costs on a new mortgage every 5 years ? Or does the bank work some magic and you just get a new payment ?

  3. This is all I am looking for. If that was your plan and you thought our picks were better used waiting for Rudolph because the talent gap wasn't as big as perceived, that's fine as long as you can convince me you weren't just taking the last girl at the bar when the lights come on.

    A 2 is a 10 at 10 minutes to 2 probably doesn't work for QBs.

Right, it's not so much worrying about us being the first to draft a QB. It's more so ensuring that our GM is hellbent on getting the best QB he possibly can, whether that be trading up or sticking back because he knows the guy he thinks is the best isn't being properly identified by other GMs. Either way, I want total conviction in the guy they draft and I want him on record saying it so the fan base knows the plan was executed.

And if they can't get the QB or two (or three) that Beane labeled a potential franchise guy, I don't want him taking any QB early. Either believe in your heart and soul in the guy or don't waste an early pick trying to convince yourself otherwise.

It's not that the other GMs don't properly identify the same guy - the QB selected has to fit in with the scheme favored by the OC. I believe I read that Daboll said he prefers a pocket passer.

  4. Just a few more pieces of advice outside of the financial stuff ...

    • Look for anything that might affect resale of the home, i.e. road noise, electrical transformers near the house, property drainage, etc
    • Check out the neighbors carefully - nothing worse than neighbors from hell
    • Beware of a neighborhood with lots of rentals
    • If there is an HOA, check out the covenants carefully
    • And obviously, check out the crime stats and school ratings if you have kids

Make sure also if it's an older house to get the age of the roof. The inspector may pass the roof, but that doesn't mean you won't need a new one in 2-3 years and it's a big expense.

  5. The Kane deal kind of reminds me of the Dareus deal...dump the talented misfit even if it means losing the transaction. I tend not to believe Botterill when he said the owner wasn't involved in the decision....Kane produced but with our untalented players and unstable team structure surrounding him, he wasn't being maximized here. Plus he wasn't going to get  $7-8 million for being a 20-30 goal scorer on a losing team, not with his history...The days of overpaying misfits are hopefully finally over for the Sabres. Now that Kane's on a good team, I think he will finally become the high scoring power forward he was always meant to be. I see great things ahead for Evander Kane with the Sharks. It wasn't going to happen in Buffalo...

Botterill is never going to say that the Pegulas were involved just like Lehner would never admit he really did ask for a trade.

A guy I follow on twitter said that Friedman commented during one of his intermission segments last night that he expects the Sabres will not be qualifying Lehner.

Lehner knows this for sure and probably asked for a trade.

  6. How does it not?  Do you know what hater means?

Spare me ... lots of haters of successful people as well.

FWIW, thinking a player will be drafted high and thinking a player will be a good pro are not the same thing. I think he'll be a bust, but I also think he's likely to go in the top half of the first round.

Agreed, but I never said he would be a good pro. I think he's got tons of potential, but what he does with it is yet to be seen. And IMO, he'll be gone before the Bills pick even if they move up.

  7. Allen 'haters'?  That implies people are irrationally rating him low.  He easily has the worst accuracy of the group, and has the worst yards per completion, according to numbers posted up-thread.

Here are the QB ratings when under pressure:

    Mayfield: 111.6

    Rudolph 97.2

    Jackson 90.6

    Darnold: 74.8

    Rosen  69.1

    Allen 58.5

    Again, easily last place.

Actually it doesn't imply anything but a lot of folks think he'll be a bust in the pros. But a lot of scouts and folks that watch a lot of film think he'll go really high. None of us have any idea if he will be good in the pros. College performance is not necessarily a prerequisite for pro success at QB.

  8. Harrington punctuated the disagreement in his article today.

    http://buffalonews.com/2018/02/27/sabres-notebook-e-rod-bullish-on-oregan-lehner-rebukes-blogger-frantic-kane-makes-sharks-debut/

He didn't have to vent on Twitter, but I think he closed the issue. Journalists earn and keep access. Even in today's twittersphere, non-journalists should still be vetted before being relied on.

Harrington made some childish comments on Twitter akin to the blogger and mommy's basement. Not professional at all but also not surprising.

I also would not be surprised if Lehner actually did say something off the cuff about getting traded as he probably realizes he's not part of the plan going forward.

  9. ^

    Hear, hear.

Also: 2 of the last 3 mocks I've read have mocked Josh Allen to the Bills.

In other news: I need to stop reading mock drafts.

Don't think the Allen haters will have anything to worry about - I'd bet he'll be gone in the 1st 3 QBs taken. TT could very well end up in Denver with Allen as the backup.

I think he already played in a game this season, no? Wouldn't the Vikings have already done this?

You're right - he played a few snaps against Cinci on 12/17. Would assume the physical would be a little more detailed considering he was already under contract to the Vikes and we would be paying him somewhere between 8-12 mil (guessing). Same with Bradford although he would cost more.

  10. I'm sure he can. Passing a physical just isn't the same as playing NFL football though. I'm not sure anything is honestly

Maybe, I'd like to see what an NFL physical entails ... must be some kind of mobility and strength testing meaning stressing a repaired knee somewhat.

  11. I didn't listen to that give and take, but I think the denial of ownership's involvement was intended to tamp down any theory that the Pegulas wanted the guy gone because he was trouble. That the guy was traded for hockey reasons alone -- that he wasn't part of the team's future plans for hockey reasons.

I think if the Pegulas wanted him gone, it would have happened last summer.

  12. When Pouliot played against the Bruins, figured it was a foregone conclusion he'd be a Sabre today.

Thought Gorges might have gotten moved but Oduya & Alt getting put on waivers seemed to take any maket for him from slim to non-existent.

Gorges has been scratched too often to be worthy of a trade. Betting he'll be overseas next year.

  13. A fair point. I combed that thread though, and don't see any update posts to indicate the asking price ever changed. I don't see anything to indicate Botterill's asking price would have changed, especially as dramatically as the haul he got for Kane. It seems like that's just what he could get; I would bet he would tell you the return is disappointing too

I'm disappointed as well, but if there was only one offer for whatever reason, so be it. Trade talks go on all year, not just at the deadline. If Kane is so valuable, why didn't a team make a play for him back when he was hot and we were essentially out of it ?

  14. These are the best reporters in the sport, if they're reporting something like this, for months, and it was false, don't you think Botterill would have denied it? Or, don't you think they wouldn't have even reported it? These guys wouldn't have a job if they reported falsities about organizations all the time; nobody would give them any information for disparaging them.

I've never known any GM in any sport to come out and say 'we want this for this' publicly. That doesn't mean multiple reports from reputable sources are incorrect

TSN Insiders are not the Enquirer

Your posts are from around mid-December until mid-January. Take a look at Kane's game logs from 12/23 until 2/8. Guy basically took about 6 weeks off and did nothing.

  15. Maybe you were hearing this value assessment from people on boards like this or media people who don't know anymore than the guy on the street. So any disappointment should be with those people who don't know anymore than the rest of us but we're sure they did.

Exactly, find me a quote from GMJB where he said the only acceptable return for Kane was a 1st and 2nd rounder, a current NHL player, and a good prospect. All media speculation.

  16. For the life of me, I don't understand this line of thinking.  As in, there are positions people take here that I understand, but disagree with. Even vehemently. This one, I just don't understand. Cannot get my head wrapped around it.

Me either - SJ won't deal with GMJB in the future, Kane gets pissed he's not playing for a Cup contender and won't resign with us if even offered.
