  1. Watched a lot of breakdown of Jackson and Rudolph and 1 of Allen.

Rudolph is the best pocket guy but his passes have less velocity then the other 2. He's accurate but I also think he had way better receivers.

Jackson makes reads where Rudolph doesn't. He throws harder and his foot work isn't great. Rudolph throws from a better base. Jackson's accuracy isn't a concern for me.

Both Jackson and Rudolph make good throws and at all levels. I think Jackson has a higher ceiling but also a lower floor. Rudolph not making a lot of reads worries me.

Rudolph has slightly better touch. But Jackson is good. I noticed a lot of drops from his receivers. I noticed Jackson over threw receivers too. Usually he was throwing off base but still.

Allen is a mess. Canon arm. Never seems to throw set. A lot of play action passes. Does do progressions but sometimes makes the wrong read. Very athletic. When he does sit in the pocket, he will make good throws. He's started a ton less games then the other 2 and honestly that's not a good thing. He's got major bust potential. His accuracy is meh. He has no touch sometimes just guns it.

If I'm buffalo I'm thinking about Rudolph. If I'm giving my honest opinion, Jackson still gives me the best feeling. He looks right when he steps up in the pocket. He steps up a lot and he works hard. I'm taking Jackson at 21.

There's always the chance Jackson might not be there @ 21/22, especially after the combine. Lots of teams need QBs if the draft order stays as is.

  2. Gretzky was not the fastest, but he possessed a skating agility like no other. I read an analysis years ago and it was said that Gretzky had the best agility ever when it came to pivots, quick turns without losing speed, and change of direction. Also Gretzky's shooting accuracy was head and shoulders above other players.

Add in unparalleled hockey sense and an ability to see the entire ice and there you have it.

  3. Look at the GAA for goalie in Gretzky's era versus today. Billy Smith was one of the top goalies in 1981-82 with a 2.97 GAA. In 2016, that would've ranked him about 71st. Grant Fuhr was @ 3.31 which in 2016 would have ranked him last among regular starters

Bigger equipment and move to a better goaltending style has contributed to reduced scoring.

  4. What other experienced QB's?

My comment was meant as an alternative to McCarron - I'm leery of Bradford and Bridgewater due to injuries.

So alternatives to McCarron - Foles / Cousins / Keenum / Fitz / McCown / Moore / even Kaepernick if the blacklist is lifted.

  5. I think either 1 of the Vikings guys (whoever is released) or Maybe take a shot at AJ McCarron. I think Nick Foles will cost too much and if I am drafting a QB, I am not trading picks for another one.

McCarron isn't going to wow anyone but he could be a solid placeholder for a year. Idk, after seeing so much of him in college he doesn't really excite me but he is an option.

So you think the Bills will contend with McCarron or one of the Vikings' castoffs ? I'm not willing to wait a couple more years if other experienced QBs are available that give us a better chance.

  6. A little side Gretzky story - I was in grad school at UB in '82 and my buddy's dad gave us his tickets for 2/24/82 for the Oilers. Just happened to be the night Gretzky broke Espo's record. After the game, we went to Mulligan's on Hertel to hook up with some other classmates. Gretzky, Semenko, and few other Oilers showed up and my buddy was brave enough to ask Gretzky to do a shot for my b-day. Wayne and Semenko said yes with no hesitation and proceeded to set up about 12 B-52 shots on the bar. We toasted happy b-day and we then left them alone. True story but alas no pics to prove it.

  7. So Gretzky would be putting up 200 point seasons in today's NHL

Probably not and I think the main reason is the added size of goalie equipment and the fact most goalies these days use a more effective butterfly style. If Gretzky was playing today with the same cast of characters, he would still be putting up plenty of points. Hockey sense and puck awareness haven't changed much over time.

Back to football. At the 22minute mark they start talking about Lamar Jackson and I found it interesting.

I'd like to see posts from all of you guys ranking the QB draft and what you think the Bills should do.

  8. My remark was pointed to your contention that there was no debate being had.

And this is just a fact. Gretzky was/is the greatest of all-time, but I take the view that part of what made him great was that his fellow professionals, as a cohort, were *so* far behind him. There's been a lot of catching up that's gone on in the meantime, which is partly what makes a guy like Crosby so amazing.

    Those guys were all amazing.

But they're also all HOFers, I'm guessing.

When I watch highlights from the late 70s and throughout the 80s, I'm amazed at how poorly the average d-man moves.

Watch some highlights from the modern era and you can find some poor movements as well. Not every defensemen today is fleet of foot.

  9. At least someone does

I don't know how you would even prove my claim. It's the same thing as saying pitching is better now than it was in the 1905s, it just is. NHL defensemen today are so much faster

Then it remains a claim only ... I'd put Larry Robinson, Paul Coffey, Orr, Guy Lapointe, Serge Savard, Denis Potvin, Langway and others against anyone playing today. I'll even toss Housley in there.

  10. While I have been frustrated by Gramps at times and I do believe he is wrong, you are right. We shouldn't just go after him saying "your wrong".  It has been a frustrating week and I think it is easy to dehuman people on the other side of a screen sometimes as opposed to explaining your viewpoints and not getting frustrated.

Curious, which QB's do you like? Would you be willing to rank them?

Funny ... I don't take offense as I have thick skin. When someone says that 99% of today's defensemen are better than those in the 80s, that's an opinion with no substantive data to back it up. Just like the poster who said that some NHL defensemen couldn't skate backwards.

    Sure, here's my ranking :

    Rosen

    Allen

    Mayfield

    Darnold

    Rudolph

    Jackson

    Falk

When I said I wanted Foles and QB @ 21/22, that's my opinion. You don't have to agree with it and the Bills may not go in that direction. I'd rather have Foles and a chance to win next year than an unproven McCarron, an injury-prone Bradford or Bridgewater, or some other UFA except Cousins who the Bills most likely can't afford.

  11. This entire discussion is about context and relativity. In the context of what we were discussing, just because there were less teams in the NHL in the 80s does not mean there was more talent on them than teams today; i.e. 99% of defensemen today are better than those in the 80s

    I mean it's not a debate. He's wrong

My last post on this ...

Strictly your opinion. I have mine - you have yours. Just like all of the opinions about who the Bills should draft. None of us really knows who will make it.

And the link provided for the "era" comparison is laughable at best.

  12. You're really giving meaning to your name with this debate. The way the game is played is radically different than it was in the 80s and 90s, and it shows in the results: across the league yards, attempts, completions, and touchdowns are up, while interceptions are down.

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/era-adjusted-passing-leaders

This is not a debate and what difference does the number of teams make from 28 in 1990 to 32 ? Each QB is only playing 16 others. If anything, Flacco's numbers should be lower considering he's playing against better athletes and more "sophisticated" defenses. And the game is "radically different" ? Please ...

Less teams does not equal better talent. I'd bet AHL teams could give 80s NHL teams a run for their money

Sure it does ... condense the NHL to about 12 teams and tell me who got cut.

  13. Go watch a highlight reel of gretzky. The difference today isn't goalie equipment. It's every defender can skate.

I watched Gretzky in person a few times ... goalie equipment and the stand up style definitely played a part in Gretzky' success. As did a great cast of teammates. If you don't think defenders could skate back then, you're nuts. In 1982, there were 21 teams and today there are 31. If anything, defense talent is spread out more.

  14. Same way you do for Gretzky and Ruth, relative comparisons to their peers

    Bullcarp ...

Football's the same, a yard is a yard, Kelly & Flacco play or played primarily outdoors and so on, 16-game schedule.

There were 28 teams in 1990, 32 today. Possibly better athletes today which would work against Flacco on defense. Concussion protocol now which would work against Flacco now should he be removed from a game.

I would agree you can't compare Gretzky to today's players mainly due to the size of goalie equipment. Same with Ruth - relief pitchers as we know them did not exist in the 1920s. Stating pitchers stayed in the game until the end in most cases and Ruth hit most of his home runs in the live ball era.

But comparing Kelly who finished in 1996 to Flacco who started in 2008 is definitely doable.

  15. .......

    ..

    ....

I'm going to make this as nice as I possibly can: comparing stats from now to the mid-80s mid-90s without adjusting for era is akin to comparing gas prices without adjusting for inflation.

Whatever dude ... football the game hasn't changed that much. And do tell ... how do we adjust for "era" ?

  16. Foles got hot at the right time. Sorta like Joe Flacco a few years ago. And much like Joe Flacco, we shouldn't get fooled into thinking he's actually good.

Oh I dunno about that ... Flacco's career stats are pretty good and he's got a ring. Beggars can't be choosers. We have a starting QB that everyone wants to run outta town and a backup with a noodle arm that is looking at 3rd string next year.

  17. Fun fact: Taylor has a better career QB passer rating than Foles. Foles in 2013 has the league-leading rating, but otherwise his best season rating is less than Taylor's worst (for seasons with more than 100 pass attempts, i.e. a starter). Foles put together a string of 6 good games as the Eagles starter this year that happened to take them to the Championship. Betting on that to continue is dubious based on past performance.

I'll take Foles based on those 6 games, especially his playoff and SB performance.
