  1. I've been running some calculations to see if paying extra on my mortgage would be worth it. We bought a condo to be our home for the 5 years my wife has left in grad school. Chances are we will leave Columbus when that time is up. Or if we stay, we'll probably be looking for a bigger home anyways to start a family. For the sake of round numbers, let's say we have 60 months of payments before we sell.

5 years isn't a long enough runway for the extra payments to mean much. By my calculations, $400/mo extra would only net us $2700 in savings when we sell. I'd rather take that money and max out my Roth and start investing elsewhere (maybe even my company's lousy no-match 401k) before making the extra payment. But if we planned to stay 10+ years, I definitely would be pumping in the extra money. Unfortunately I have a short enough runway that the frontloaded interest is hard to dodge.

Side note- I almost considered a 5-year ARM since I knew we would be selling in 5-6 years. But you just never know, so we went 30 year fixed. Has anyone else taken out an ARM with the intent to be out before rates change?

    Yep, I'm on a 7-year 2.3% ARM until 8/2020 before which I'll be downsizing.

  2. Maybe I'm having a senior moment here (also haven't, fortunately, had a ton of experience with car insurance), but why would you have to pay the deductible? Also why would your insurance go up?

Probably because he wants his car fixed but would get reimbursed by the city once his claim was approved. Your insurance can go up even if you're not at fault based on the number of accident claims you file as they may see you as a higher risk.

  3. Well, we did a 'drive by' and there is a good reason for that price point.

Needless to say we are not going to be looking at the inside, unless they drop the price quite a bit.  We will monitor that situation.

    Oooffff ...

I just took a look and it's pending already.  No doubt one of those damn Europeans ( ;)  to all our friends in Europe on here) that is buying up all the NS coastal properties with their damn Euros.

What was wrong with it ?

  4. I'm asking you.  You said Bortles was a highly-rated accurate college QB who turned into a bust, then followed that by saying he is fine.

You're right - he's a bust that would be great on the right team. Just like Flacco and Trent Dilfer.

  5. So which is it?  Bortles is fine, or Bortles is an example of a "highly-rated accurate college QB" that was a bust in the pros?

Depends who you ask. Bortles might win a SB with the Jags like Flacco did with the Ravens. Most would say Tom Coughlin is a pretty astute football mind and he resigned Bortles. Must see something.

  6. So you're saying college stats are useless? I agree! Allen is not an accurate passer. He doesn't throw with anticipation. He doesn't make quick decisions. That's not all getting fixed. I will happily bet any amount of money you'd like on a charity bet that he doesn't sniff Elway's jock.

Sorry, don't bet anymore after losing my Buff State student loan money in the late 70s. Time will tell on Allen. I hope he succeeds wherever he ends up.

And I don't know who the right QB is for the Bills to draft ... but guaranteed some folks on this board will not be happy.

I had to dig this up from a Numberfire article I remember reading about Bortles leading up to his draft:

For Bortles, none of his statistics really jump out of the page at you. Of the 52 quarterbacks in the study, Bortles ranked 14th in games played, 14th in adjusted QBR (out of 24), 21st in passer efficiency rating, and 28th in adjusted yards per attempt. It's about as blah as you can get.

The obvious reason that Bortles is so highly sought after is the fact that he is just a large human being. However, you would think that, if this height was such a grotesque advantage, it would have translated into grotesque stats as well.

On the right team, Bortles is fine. And height is a good thing for a QB to a point - IMO, I don't think Tom Brady would've been drafted at all if he was 5'11".

  7. Well, I wasn't born yet when Marino was drafted, so I don't think I'd have said much of anything. And when Favre was drafted, I was 5, so not much there either.

Are you capable of coming up with examples of players who aren't currently in the HoF? Because if you're not, then you're basically arguing Allen is going to be a HoFer based on 2 historical examples of incredible outliers. The overwhelming majority of QBs who are inaccurate in college continue to be inaccurate in the pros.

Has nothing to do with whether Allen will become a HOFer. Has all to do with the translation of college accuracy # to the pro level. Jim Kelly is another - have a look at his stats at the U. Warner another. How many examples do you need of highly-rated accurate college QBs that were busts in the pros ? There are hundreds I'm sure. Start with Bortles. Would you have wanted Bortles on the Bills ? Flacco ? Tannehill ? All pretty good college stats.

You have no idea if Allen will be Elway or Favre or Ryan Leaf. Same as me.

  8. But that's all environmental. What is it about him that makes you think he'll develop his accuracy? Or do you think his only problems were the coach and WRs?

If I had asked you the same question about Favre or Marino or others before they were drafted, what would you have said ? And how did they turn out ?

  9. There's also a boatload of knowledgeable people who disagree with you, and loved Jimmy Clausen, etc etc etc

That is not an argument at all.

Whatever ... no one here has a Ouija board that can predict which QB will be successful in the pros. No matter on Allen anyways - he'll be gone by the time the Bills pick.

  10. I'm not citing completion percentages. I don't care about their completion percentages. I think that's what you're referring to. But Favre could hit his receivers in games far better than Allen can. Allen is absolute dogshit when he isn't bombing 70 yard passes in shorts, or palming a basketball to show how big his hands are. ie, when he's doing anything that remotely resembles being a quarterback in an actual football game.

In college games @ Southern Miss ? Says who ? There's a reason Favre was at 52% - he was a raw talent that needed to be refined. 62% in the pros. Allen will have a learning curve in the NFL just like everyone else.

There are boatload of knowledgable people that disagree with you.

  11. The combine is literallly the worst place to see if he can "make the throws". When he's faced with defenses, he is miserable at throwing the ball. Worst accuracy in the draft class. If we draft this guy I will die.

Also, it was hilarious watching guys just want to see him nail everything - they were drooling over his first go route, until they saw it fall 3 yards short of the receiver. Then they tailed off halfway through their compliment "...well, that one is a bit off..."

    So was Favre ...

  12. Sam is the most likely candidate for the entitlement stamp and the I’m smarter than the coach stamp.

You see it in the interviews: “I’m not doing anything different.” Of course you are Sam.

Does his improved play mean he’s listening to the coach?

How about Risto? There’s another’s who fits the mould given his pedigree of pampered national team prodigy.

And of course Eichel. With Kane being the ringleader for a group of young athletes that has been pampered and told they are special for years, coming to downtrodden organization where they were embraced as saviours and have never been forced to earn it.

The Pegulas coddle their athletes in general, Murray fed that with our high picks and Bylsma and Housley aren’t exactly the types to throw the fear of god into anyone.

Didn't giving Risto 5.4 mil for 6 years broadcast a message that he's special ?

  13.

In some cases, GMs actually do just fail to evaluate properly regardless of scheme of the OC...

Here's a quote from Brandon Beane just a few days ago via the Buffalo News on what to look for in a QB for Daboll's scheme specifically:

Q: How much of a fit is the coordinator and the QB, given coaches change?

A: We're looking for good football players at every position. Yes, coaches move on. So we've got to draft a good football player who fits the Buffalo Bills. You're exactly right, Brian could be a head coach somewhere. Yeah, I'm not just going to draft a guy who only fits what Coach Daboll does.

Beane has said in the past that he wants a QB that wins from the pocket and can make plays in the pocket, but honestly what GM doesn't want that?

What does this even mean ? Sure coaches can move on, but so can key players.
