  1. Not sure what thread to ask this question in but if we end up bottom 5 next year is Murray on the clock? With the moves he has made and with more to come this summer when does his free pass expire?

I think with the moves he has made and two top picks we cannot sniff bottom 5 next season.

Personally, I expect us to finish in the 75-85 pt range (premature without seeing what the summer brings) just by adding Reinhart, Kane, Eichel, a healthy Borges and Zemgus, and a full-time Grigo and Larsson.

Playoffs are a year away IMO but cellar dwellar days should be over.

Yes.  For me a bottom 5 finish next year is unacceptable without major injury issues occurring.  The biggest weakness right now is gt.

  2.

It would for me if I read the original quote the way you did. It doesn't for you?

This thread is about whether it is Murray's goal to to have another lottery pick next year.

He was asked if it was the goal to be a playoff team next year. He said "yes."

Sure he offered the usually qualifiers about being able to meet that goal.

But ultimately his answer was yes.

He also said the groundwork has been laid for trades and free agent acquisitions he hopes to make.

That sure doesn't sound like a guy whose first choice is a lottery pick to me.

Murray has to clear roster space. I just tried to set up the forward lines and at least 1 of Foligno, Girgorenko, and Larsson will have to go.

  3. I want Kane with Eichel.

I do expect Sam to start the year in Ra-cha-cha (but hope he proves me wrong and forces his way onto the opening day lineup) but w/in 1-1/2 seasons expect him to be the #2 C for a long time. If they hold onto Grigo, they could have a return of the '05-'07 Sabres with 3 lines that can all play hockey.

    Fun times ahead.

I don't expect him to but I am not upset if he does.

  4. Liger,

Rob posted a link to a SN video of the Murray presser on the top of page 2.

He did indeed say that he was disappointed for our fans.  The context being ... 2 years of bad play and the fact that many Sabre fans went to Erie to watch Connor play.

    -----

For what it's worth I'm with you Rob.  I have been accused of being a contrarian recently, but I don't care.

Our GM sounds like an idiot most of the time.  He probably isn't an idiot and I hope he can build a good team, but the Sabres better get someone else to do the talking, or coach this guy on what to say and how to say it.

Those things he said yesterday are just idiotic.  And if he is thinking this will fire Jack up, Jack doesn't need that.

He said "I feel for the fans"

That is not the same as "I am disappointed for the fans"

Now that I have context for the actual comment... I really don't care.  No one will care in June.

  5. Eichel is such a beast. FNC on opening day with Kane-Eichel-Girgensons out as the starting line will be a great place to be.

    The keg line.

    They're coming for us.

    Kane - Eichel - Ennis

    Moulson - Reinhart - Zemgus

    Foligno - Grigorenko - Larsson/Hodgson

    Deslauriers - Larsson/McCormick - Kaleta

Yea... we are going to have to be very active this summer because I can't fit everyone into this lineup.  I think we trade for a RW and possibly a defender.

  6. Some clarification on Tim Murray's thoughts about life

Is Buffalo’s goal to make the playoffs next season?

“I would like to think it is, yes,” he said. “Can we get the things done this summer, can we attract the right players, can we make the right trades? I can’t answer that today, but I can tell you we’ve done our homework, we’ve laid the groundwork.”

This is a Tim Murray quote btw

  7. “We’ve said along there’s two top-end, impact players, if not franchise players, in this draft,” Murray said inside the Toronto Ritz-Carlton. “They both play the right position (center), in my opinion, for rebuilding. As disappointed as we are in not having the No. 1 pick, we’re extremely happy to be able to pick two still.”

  8. I agree. I can't wait to see Eichel in a Buffalo uniform with Reinhart and Kane. We have a mini team usa with Eichel, Compher, Fasching, McCabe. It's only going to get better. Now what does Murray do with Buffalo's other first rounder and the first pick of the second round. Does he move Grigrinko or Zadorov for a proven young player. It's going to be interesting to see how this all plays out in the next few months.

Team USA also has Bailey waiting in the wings.

  9. Wondering about his competence when he crumpled under pressure and said the exact wrong things with the worst possible demeanor in a completely predictable situation seems pretty fair to me.  It speaks to his brains, judgment, and professionalism.

There was an 80% chance we weren't winning the lottery.  He's the face of the franchise and he should have been completely prepared to say all the right things.  He wasn't.  This definitely reflects poorly on him.

what exactly did he say that you hated. exact quotes.

  10. Here is what I believe Murray will do.

He has identified a player or two that he likes and he will trade for him(them) near the draft. The problem is that the league GM's now know that he will severely overpay to get the player he wants (based on the over payments he made with trades previously i.e. LA ans WPG)

For instance, lets say he likes Ryan O'Reilly from Colorado. He will give up two players, two top prospects or top draft choices to get him. He will pay too much. I believe this is a mistake, but his track record says he will do it.

When Murray talked about the Winnipeg trade he said he had to give up a top pick Myers to get two top picks in return (Kane,Bogosian). I saw him give up much more than that, but he sees things through weird glasses.

see this is why I would be critical of Murray. Is he overpaying and will that continue.

  11. The system didn't work. No system that allows a team this many #1 picks is working. You can't just say it's working when it very obviously isn't.

What will the league do if next year the Oilers just miss the playoffs and then win a lottery slot for 1st 2nd or 3rd?

  12. FWIW. Someone said on GR recently, Paul Hamilton maybe, that Sabres were elated when Oil took Nurse and Sabres also had Risto ahead of Seth Jones on their board.

Yea I heard that. I remember Kevin Devine was big into Ristolainen before during and after that draft.  So far Devine has been right.

  13. Murray isn't that enamored with Connor. Jack is a 9.5 and Connor is a 10.  You don't sell out for that.  If the draft didn't have Jack I could maybe see it but all Eichel did in the postseason was prove how ready he was (something Murray commented on) and he also will be on display at the World Championship so don't worry, Murray is set on building a winner.

  14. Really?

So, you were laughing at them for being dumb because they'd just done something you thought would be the smart thing to do?

And, before telling us how Risto was your boy all along, you might want to read this. (Pretty sure this was you as well.)

Risto wasn't my boy at all.  I wanted the forward.  Devine really wanted Ristolainen.

But yes I laughed a little at Edmonton because Nurse was their pick.  Edm was never going to draft Risto.  Thinking back I wonder what my mock draft that year had the Oilers taking?

Wanna know when I really laughed at Edm when they passed on Bennett to take Draisaitl because Draisaitl was bigger.  They really can't help themselves.

I thought Risto was part of the "Magnificent Seven" that year and Nurse was 8th in the pre-draft rankings.  Can't really remember.

Barkov, Drouin, MacKinnon, Jones, Monahan, Lindholm, and either Risto or Nichushkin depending on the source. I can't remember if I included Valeri or Risto but Nurse wasn't in there.

  15. I'm calling it.  This was not said by General Manager Tim Murray

#Sabres gm Tim Murray. "I'm disappointed for our fans."

No one has any context to the quote and no one can find where Murray said this. The Reporter from the Toronto Sun is full of until I am proven otherwise. This quote is bogus.

That said, I don't give a what Murray says in April. I care what he says on June 26th. Wake me up then.

The system isn't working. Edmonton is back at it again. This isn't a difficult concept. There's no way in hell Edmonton should have gotten this much out of the draft lottery, and yet here we are. And now they've made it even easier for them to do it again by making it possible for less terrible teams to have a better shot. So all the have to do next season is improve marginally and they'll be right back in the running for #1 again. That's f*cked up.

Look here is how you deter tanking.

Bottom 8 teams are in the lottery which is weighted so that last place gets 33% chance and then declines sharply from there. No team can pick #1 2 consecutive years.  You can only slide 1 spot. And that solves that.

  16. yes, that would be fanastic but I wont be surprised when the next "trade for McDavid" arguement infiltrates this Thread.

It better not.  Keep that bs out of here.

We have talked a lot about this particular player so here is a detailed write up

    Draft Prospect #18: Oliver Kylington

"An outstanding skater, Oliver Kylington can rush the puck and get back into position defensively. He has an excellent stride, which gives him great speed and acceleration in both directions. Excellent agility, edge work, and pivots give him the mobility to cover all areas of the ice and to walk the line on the powerplay in order to open up passing and shooting lanes.  Kylington must add lower body strength and improve his balance, as he can get knocked around in battles for the puck in the corners and while fighting for position front of the net.  He seems a bit skinny out there on the ice at times."
