    My guess is Nolan saw what a crap Latvian team could do when got their collective minds set on something, and realised the Sabres weren't giving their all Throwing John Scott off the ice though, seems like benching Dan Paille or whoever, to wake up Derek Roy.

    I'm pretty sure the NHL in general does not adhere to the IOC list of banned substances, but I could be wrong? I dsitincly remember several NHL'ers missing time up to the Salt Lake City games in 2002 (Max included), due to stuff like cold's, ordinary flu etc. As far as I recall, the IOC list of banned substances included several cold and flu meds allowed by the NHL, and players were afraid they might test positive unless they steered clear of them, well in advance. This sounds rather similar, although foolish by Backstrom. Reminds me when Ulf Samuelsson was disqualified in Nagano for entering the country on an American passport, rather than his Swedish passport - Stupid move, but hardly any ill-will behind it.

    There's always the chance that it swings the other way, and the on-ice officials get so worried about not being biased towards Canada, that they'll end being biased against them instead. Fobba's remarks in the press tells me he's lobbying for exactly that. That said, the stripes usually don't need an excuse to ruin a good game, so why would they need one now? :wallbash:

    Seeing as the draft experts all say the 2015 draft is deeper, then I'm quite fine with that. They'll suck next year as well, they're the Oilers of the east.

    I would agree, to a certain extent - The problem with the old format, was that there was always a certain team that weren't amateurs. And if you have pros in every other competition, then why should the hockey tournament be different?

    That's what they say after every olympics. You think the SHL, SM-Liiga and KHL are gonna follow suit? Nope, me neither. Let's face it, the NHL is not as significant a league as it was 20 years ago.

    At least Malkin tried, the biggest two no-shows was Ovie and Kovy (see what I did there :P ), and they had 11 KHL players on the roster this year. It doesn't matter what league they're from, if they're the wrong players. Brooks had it right.

    I'm betting it's the last time we see a Russian team with more than one true star player. That formula just hasn't worked for them. They went to the finals in 1998, but since then, they've underachieved like nobody else.

    This Russian team just hasn't played well enough to be anywhere else. Makes you wonder why really, it's not like Team USA and Team Canada don't have huge stars as well, what makes the Russians different? Strange.

    Watching the Russia - Norway game. My god, the Russians are an uninspired bunch. Their PP for instance, consists of Ovechkin and Kovalchuk standing completely still waiting for a one-timer, while the three remaining Russians pass the puck around slower than the Sabres, only to be broken up by the inevitable Max-like pass attempt through the Norweigan box.

    Depends, both are standard in Euro sporstcasts, but why would it censor JPN?

    While I'm not sure it's directly related to the bigger ice, Chara has been a complete non-factor so far. I bet *you* could knock the Tank commander off the puck :w00t:
