  1. Has it ever happened?  I don't think I have ever seen it live or reported on..  I can only envision one reason for doing it.  An ABSOLUTE must win.  Seems crazy to legislate out what is highly unlikely to begin with.

It does seem a little silly. The only time it would make sense if it's the last game of the year and a shootout win only ties you in points with a team getting into the playoffs but they have the same number of ROWs as you but would win the tiebreaker so you have to get one more ROW to get in.

That happens all the time, doesn't it?

  2. I've tempered my enthusiasm over things like the tank and it's allowed me to enjoy things as they come. So I'll take this trade as objectively good but I'm not calling it a win until I see the kid win some games.

I can see this whole thing blowing up. Much like the Rangers of the past. This is going against GMTM's own assertion that he will build through the draft.

I just don't know enough about this O'Reilly character to be as excited as everyone else, but it does seem a little weird that in this historically deep draft, we only took one player in the first round out of three chances.

To counter that though, it is rarely the wrong move to trade potential talent for proven talent, I just don't know if O'reilly actually is a proven talent.

  3. Same exact situation here. So we made a last second switch to leave early tomorrow morning and enjoy the day tomorrow.

    Will be missing the draft.

I'll will actually get to see the draft because of this. Beer and getting TF out will be the same a day later, I just hope the fishing isn't blown up.

  4. I actually think it's the opposite: the current points system gives less talented teams a better chance. They can clutch and grab their way to OT for the point, and if they can hold on for 5 minutes, they get to the shootout which is basically a coin flip statistically. It's rare, but teams like Florida two years ago when divisions based on OT losses and teams like this year's Kings miss the playoffs due to bad shootout luck.

If the Kings are unhappy about that they should have taken luck out of the equation and just gotten more ROWs.

  5. You're missing the point. The issue is not who gets in and who doesn't - I agree, that for the most part that wouldn't change. The issue is that in a tied game with 5 minutes to go, both teams basically just dump the puck and play very defensive hockey, pushing for overtime so they can get at least 1, maybe 2 points. The 3-2-1 point system makes teams have something to gain by taking more chances late in the game. Especially if they are behind in the playoff hunt

I know everyone keeps saying that, I'm just not sure it's true.

  6. I genuinely don't understand why this topic gets so much play. The best teams will get into the playoffs no matter what system is used, and maybe a few 8ish teams will swap if the point system was changed,… maybe. Who cares?

The current point system gives teams with skill (shooters and goalies) a little extra edge to make the playoffs. That's it. The NHL wants them in for obvious reasons. Good teams will still get and and bad teams won't.

  7. Congrats Boyes!

I lost my brains and ranted on twitter (it's what us millennials do) about that awful client I'm still dealing with.

Well, an internet acquaintance of mine messaged me and wants me to write a piece about client/freelance artist relationships, a do's and don'ts sort of deal for his site. Apparently he's part of some counter culture rap society of sorts and performs at SXSW and such. So that's pretty neat.

I think my goal is to just write something that would help creatives AND potential clients kinda know where the line is drawn with being a good client/###### horrible human being.

You think that'd be an easy delineation but boy you'd be surprised...

Your piece should start out by mentioning that when someone else who does what you do, offers you a client,... run away as fast as you can. What you are experiencing is usually the reason why and they know it, otherwise, they would have taken the job.

  8. Not true. When dealing w/ a rush, you want to take the forward out wide - keeping him away from the prime scoring area known as the slot. With a wider rink, there is that much more real estate to allow them to have.

You also, on odd man rushes, have longer distances between players when making passes - which equates to lower completion percentages.

There's a reason that the Sabres and Bruins in the 70's had more 20 & 30 goal scorers than anyone else, besides having very good front offices - they played on 2 of the smallest rinks in the league.

And in an era known for leaving the puck carrier alone and its interference calls. [/sarc]

Nothing needs to be done. This is just the natural ebb and flow of scoring in the NHL.
