I think any team with a surplus of up and coming defenders is going to want a hell of a lot better players than either of those guys and they'd be able to get a better offer from someone else. Last I looked there were maybe 3 or 4 teams that were stocked up on defense (Anaheim, Minnesota, and Nashville) and a bunch of teams looking to upgrade their defense (everyone else). Pretty underwhelming to look at it now, although I guess it did set up the relationship with Minnesota where we send them our pending UFA's for their upcoming playoff run and they send us their second round picks for 10 years. There's a lot of noise around it, but if you squint you really could make a case that we traded Vanek and Pominville for Kane and O'Reilly.
