The 'Loser' Point

Samson's Flow

The solution is incredibly simple, but of course the NHL can't fathom it --

Regulation win: 3 points

OT/Shootout win: 2 points

OT/Shootout loss: 1 point

Regulation loss: 0 point

Wouldn't this make the third period of every game far more intense? Especially late in the season when teams are trying to make up ground? Plus, every game would be worth the same amount of points. The puck drops and there are 3 points up for grabs. How many can you get that night?

For some reason the IIHF is the only one capable of figuring it out

GM's warming up to the ideas of making the Loser Pointtm less impactful and all games worth the same number of points?

of course. 3-2-1 is so obviously the way to go it's almost crazy to discuss it.

and to anyone who is thinking "why fix what aint broke?," please read the grantland article linked earlier. the incidence of ties has gone from 18 to 23% with the advent of the loser point. bleagh!

If you gave no points to both teams for a tie would they not go for it to try and win ? Awarding a point for a tie is crazy. Nobody won the game nobody gets a point.

that's better than the system we have now!
