Leafs wanted Regier...

But, even then Rigas still had a target payroll and continually lost money on the operations of the Sabres by paying only Hasek and underpaying everyone else.

Not sure we have ever addressed this on the board, but isn't it amazing the Rigas family stole millions of dollars, so much so that they went to jail, which you really have to f-up to do when you are that rich ... and they STILL didn't spend enough on the hockey team? I mean, at least when Bruce McNall did it in LA he put together a bunch of talent and made a run at the Cup ... they were stealing MILLIONS and building golf courses in Coudersport while they argued over pocket change with Peca. Unbelievable.

looks like the ex-sharks coach is coming into Toronto today and will be hired as the new coach

AS for Regier, Personally I would be all for letting him go to Toronto and prove he is such a hockey genius. If he thinks the backlash for losing Drury or Briere was bad from Sabres fans, try having something like that happen in Toronto................

Yes, we know your feelings toward Regier. When is the last time the Leafs made the playoffs? How much more backlash can there be??

Even the idea of seeing Regier in Toronto scares the crap out of me. He could always find and sign really good, young talent to make up a competitive team(like we've seen as recently as today). The trouble he has had with the Sabres is keeping the big money superstars like Drury, Peca, Briere, and to a lesser extent others. He wouldn't have that problem in TO and I could see him putting together a really good team up there. :(

I believe Berger on this one.

But how much to make of it? The Leafs are conducting the worldwide search and are about to go to

the draft in 16 days without a coach or GM. Toronto does hockey right. ;)

Just out of curiosity, any reason to accord credibility to Berger? I don't know anything about him, but I'm just not inclined to believe much I see on a hockey rumors website. I am inclined to believe that it was Golisano that screwed up the drury deal, but I've never seen anything else anywhere about allegedly frosty relations between Golly and Darcy. It's certainly possible, but it just has the ring of rumor-writer's embellishment.

He would have to acquire such a player like Drury or Briere, and as far as I can tell, aside from maybe Tomas Kaberle, they really do not have a single player that matches the importance that both Drury and Briere had in Buffalo. Sundin's a UFA and doesn't even look to be coming back. And, let's not forget that in order for Drury and Briere to have left, they must have been acquired by Buffalo, which is what Darcy did. I'm not sure if you read the initial blog in the first place, but the blog from Howard Berger indicates based on his "inside knowledge" that Golisano was the one preventing the re-signing of Drury and Briere not Darcy. Unless there is a memoir or a tell all book, we will never truly know, but I tend to agree with Berger.

Honestly, I feel like only in the first 3-4 years of his tenure at Buffalo did we see what he was really capable of such as keeping Hasek and Satan, acquiring Barnes, Warrener, Gilmour, Dumont, and other players. Frankly, to this day, I still side with Darcy on the Peca holdout. To this day, a third line defensive forward is not worth $2.5 million/year. Wasn't worth it then and isn't worth it now. But, even then Rigas still had a target payroll and continually lost money on the operations of the Sabres by paying only Hasek and underpaying everyone else. If Darcy went to a team without a budget and could spend to the salary cap every year, we'd really see what Darcy is truly capable of, and I still don't feel like we've seen his true capability at all during his tenure in Buffalo.

Good post.

I listen to Berger on the Fan 590 out of Toronto, he's often on their Hockey Central show.

Generally his stuff has been pretty reliable, esp. with the trade issues and the refusal of Leafs players to waive their No-trades.

He's been reporting everyday on the developments in the Leafs front office...I don't think there

is much to be gained in the Toronto market for reporting this one unless it is true. He would get run out of Toronto if he was wasn't accurate, because most Leaf fans can't stand him.

OK, thanks. On your recommendation I'll give him a listen.

That there is the Sherpa Seal of Approval.

OK, I know I'm old and out of touch, but give me a little help on the reference? I even googled it and could only come up with this, which doesn't seem right.

It's gotta be some nifty pornographic trick by Hayden P., right?

Nah, no Hayden trick on this one. X has been referred to as the "Hockey Sherpa" around these parts in the past, so I figure he should have something like the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, but for hockey and SabreSpace issues, hence the Hockey Sherpa Seal of Approval - or maybe the Sherpa Seal of Awesome, a la Barney Stinson. (As you can tell it's getting late and I'm getting a little loopy.)

Maybe Screamin' can make up a little stamp that X can put in his avatar or post in threads that he likes.
