If talent was "evenly" distributed each team would have about 4 players.  The Sabres have 6, after only Dahlin being listed a year ago.

I read their take on Tage.  The say he doesn't compete hard enough in the D zone.  It's an interesting comment.  I think it has some validity, but was it a function of the player not being interested or the system DG had them running?

I would say the backchecking up the middle needs to improve across the board.  Too many transition shots from the high slot without getting our stick or body in there.

I got ya. Do you want to be able to see the game while heading to and from the washroom? I don't see any other reason one would want to or need to be walking around during play.

I mean they kinda block the entrances during play.  The TV's in the concourses are also comically small, and half of them are broken in some way.

It also makes the area seem larger instead of these cramped gathering areas.

  3. It's a start - my big issue is if you arent in the club section, you can't see the ice in the slightest and i don't think they can really fix that.

Screen and sound is terrible in there.  Hopefully upgrading sound will improve the TV sound too because its terrible.

I never get pizza at bills/sabres games because its overpriced, cold usually, and terrible.  Bills games - fingers bucket, sabres - a weck if i don't eat beforehand.  I never thought they were THAT bad (they weren't good though), but if they want to improve it i'll pay the extra dollar.

Except when you consider the age and the wear-and-tear. Hes going to be 35, with additional playing time, a surgery, and injuries since the last time he was a point per game player.

Thats what i meant with physicals though.  Can he play at a higher level than he did with the injury, and can he match some of his play from before that?  My assumption is no, as most people with bad hip injuries tend to retire.  I suspect he gets signed, gets injured again, and retires.

To many people he isn't very likeable. (to each their own reasons).  As far as his numbers, he is basically a mid 20 goal scorer per 82 games over the last few years with awful defensive play and defensive metrics (same for his whole career even when he was on a good team.) AND he is coming off of a major injury/surgery now at 35 years of age. After joining the Rangers, he wasn't really a difference maker for them (6 goals in 26 games including playoffs, a 19 goal pace)  To me, not much to like.

Well... he was injured last year and played through it...

He was greater than a point per game the previous 4 seasons.  To me it comes down to physicals, can he still play?

I don't like the $30 per month either.

BUT, during the season they are on average what, 10-15 games per month? That comes out to $2-$3 per game in most months. They probably think that is a fair price.

I think the 'take rate' on this will be pretty high eventually, probably will take a few months for people to accept it.  From my own personal point of view, all the 'young' adults in my life (age 20-30) will not do a full cost/benefit analysis on this versus just getting cable and what you get for that money. NONE of them have traditional cable and they just aren't going to get it, so this option is much more likely for them to take.

I suspect they'll partner with a streamer as some sort of add-on service as these local sports networks slowly go belly up.  ESPN+ is this much - add in a single team package for X more.

Advertising rates will not change regardless of who is broadcasting the games. The games, in some manner, will be "broadcast". The problem right now is the league has been tied to a regional broadcasting paradigm and has been slow to respond to cord-cutting. Once the current contracts play out they should be able to revise the way they approach "broadcasting" to accommodate the emerging paradigm.

It'll just be subscription regional broadcasting if i had to guess.  I think 30/month is absurd for MSG+ though.

For that much... can they fix the broadcast so the sound is in sync?

To me, a top 10 player at their position in the league is someone I'm not worried about icing in either zone with 0:50 remaining and either up or trailing by 1 and having a good feeling about tying it or keeping my net empty. It's like a top-10 QB in the NFL... you're down by 3 and just got the ball on your 25 yard line and you've got 1 time out and 0:50 on the clock. A top-10 QB you feel good about tying the game and possibly winning in regulation. Other QBs need to get really lucky or you're just praying it isn't a game sealing INT or strip sack.

Tage is on my Center Council, but I don't yet grant him the rank of Master.

Tage has has only 2 NHL seasons at center (after 4 seasons on the wing). His potential is sky high. He can still take his sound defensive positioning and elevate it into suffocating defense where his reach is deflecting everything, forcing poorer shot angles, and his strength is dominating puck battles to get the puck out of the D-zone. Offensively, yes, he's very, very good. I think he can be a lock in the top 10 by the end of the 2023-24 postseason if he keeps progressing.

I'd like to see Tage backchecking through the middle more effectively.  You watch boston and it seems like the high slot takeaways is where their offense comes from.

Eichel has never had that huge breakout season.  Talent wise certainly.

I also don't see him cracking 40 goals - if he didn't do it shooting 16% (like 4-5% higher than career average).  I also don't see it happening now that he's become more injury prone, and isn't really a PP goal threat.

  10. He's in that wheelhouse for sure

Mcdavid, Matthews, Draisaitl, Mackinnon probably make up the top 4.

After that you have Point, Hughes, Tage, Crosby in some order.  If bergeron plays hes in the top 10.  Then I'd put Petterson, Eichel, Malkin, Zibanejad, Stamkos (and probably some others like Tavares Larkin and Hischier) in that next tier.

If we're talking all-around game I'd put him top 15, just outside top 10..

my top 10 in no specific order

    • McDavid
    • Crosby
    • Matthews
    • Barkov
    • MacKinnon
    • Malkin
    • Bergeron
    • Draisaitl
    • Aho
    • Hughes

...I'd put Zibanejad in there as well, just above Tage.

I can't argue much there.  Aho always scores on us and he's one that i forgot.

Bruins basically retained the same defensive system they'd been using with Cassidy. This is hard for us to employ because it requires a lot of disciplined structure from the forwards. Good luck getting Skinner to buy into that. Hopefully we figure out something.

In terms of the D, we already employ what Monty brought. He just let the D drive and join the rush. I've said for a while I think Clifton is a seamless fit for us because of that. He has the speed and he already has the style. he pairs perfectly with Power or Dahlin. He blocks shots and hits a lot as well. Only drawbacks are his size/reach and his tendency to sometimes go for the extra hit and get caught out of position.

Some improved back skating and back checking would go a long way to improving team defense.  There are WAY too many wide open shots from the high slot, and a guy like VO or Skinner just sort of drifting behind the play looking to turn up ice.  I think all 4 of the centers need to prioritize this as well as something that just can't happen.

On the PK i think they can do a better job at the blue line on making zone entry more challenging, they also got caught puck watching way too much as the season wore on.  Seemed like teams figured out how to attack us down-low on their PP's, and we just gave up a lot of space.  Backdoor cross crease passing was also just wide open for business, and there wasn't a tandem that did a great job there clearing that out.

Wondering about Quinn's achilles injury. What happened? How was it injured? Not sure it was mentioned earlier in this thread but was it severed by a skate?

Its rarely anything of note like a lifting injury.  It's usually something stupid like a box jump where you land and it just snaps.

Absolutely and unequivocally a big NO.

Just track his career and see how every single time he  was moved it ended badly for the franchise that got him. It's no accident or coincidence.

Friend of mine lives in Nashville and was pretty tight with Johansen and Duchene... I'm not shocked that a new GM would move them.

1st off, that was already covered with the possibility they don't want to waste assets (and the 3rd listed was $$$) to pick up a guy they'll only need for a month or 2 in all likelihood.

You're going to go and pay big bucks for a FA just so the Sabres have Quinn's 1-2 month absence covered?  IMHO that simply doesn't make much, if any, sense.

I think id rather plan for longer and eat some money than keep VO, or put an inexperienced player in a position they aren't prepared for.

I don't think you need to look at the top of the free agent bucket, but i think the team also could use a compher type in the bottom 6 anyway.

  16. 27 minutes ago, Taro T said:

Or, not trading him says they're down a middle 6 scoring winger and they aren't convinced any of the kids looking to grab a spot are ready to do so and they don't want to waste assets (whether it be in players, draft capital, just $'s or a combo to fill that spot for a couple of months) at present.

Altering plans due to events changing doesn't necessarily mean that management has changed its overall plan nor vision of how to get there.

Heck, maybe coming this close to being a former Sabre ends up Olofsson's come to Jesus moment and he bears down more on the smaller aspects of the game and becomes the player that Granato keeps telling us he can be.  Should he be on the roster in October, he can always still get traded after Quinn comes back or after they decide one of the kids IS ready for that sort of usage.

EDIT: & btw, still expect him to be traded.  Just don't see it as a slam dunk anymore.  Would've had it at 98% certainty he's gone; would now put it at about 55%.

    Did we miss free agency?

And? This has nothing to do with NHL readiness. Kulich and Rosen are not NHL ready and that is all that matters. Great Rosen scored in the AHL playoffs and so did Kulich, I hope they can take that and be better in the AHL this upcoming season.

Quickly on the bold, if this means the World Jrs than no they did not. Kulich won a silver medal. If it means the World Championship, Kulich wasn't there.

    Bloom was already traded

Good to know! Hard to tell... it just said drafted by buffalo and tons of junior stats, in any case i crossed him off

  18. So... Where do the higher picks (i just did the first few rounds) fit prospect wise and what timetables are we looking for?  Who would you be willing to move from this group?

    AHL

    Rosen

    Kulich

    Rousek

    Kisakov

    Overseas

    Östlund

    Neuchev

    Polpatov

    Juniors

    Savoie

    Benson

    Bloom

    Nadeau

Well I don't have any specific reason to believe the young players won't continue to improve.

With NHL average goaltending they easily make the playoffs last season.

It's more than concerning that KA believes they're set with Comrie, UPL and Levi.

I seriously doubt he is.  Levi will be with the club and my guess is you want to bring him along... not slowly but not the everyday starter either.  Somewhere in the 30-40 start range maybe?  I don't know that i want to see Comrie or UPL make the rest of them, and i don't think you can look at their 22 numbers and say that you're comfortable with them either.

You say it in a press conference because... you have to.
