Ya, exactly. It's never a problem to have too many decent players. We've just been crap for so long we've forgotten times when other teams wanted the discards we threw on waivers. Man, it would be nice to have that again wouldn't it?

Really, you end up with a prospect cupboard overflowing you simply trade some of them away for future picks. You start doing that old way back Montreal thing where you trade for somebody's first 3, 4, 5 years later and that GM makes the deal cause his job is on the line now and then your prospect cupboard overflows forever. It's never a problem.

I like the draft a ton now philosophy though - figure out who's good, cut your losses on the failures and re-stock again.

It's not even assured that Sheahan will be on the NHL roster. And if he is he will at best be a marginal fourth line role player. Why so much fretting over at best a depth player? If he is better than our current depth role players, then what's the complaint? Getting marginally better is better than not getting marginal better!

Bit of an outdated statistic but he was a plus player on the Kraken of all teams.  Kills Penalties.  Immediately the best available player for d-zone draws.

Not to mention - we had over 150 games played by Eakin/Bjork/Hayden because of injuries.  This guys better than all 3, and when injuries strike is a decent 4th line center option.

As long as its not preventing the team from improving, why would you care even a smidgen?

Should the day ever come that the team has the make a hard decision due to Skinners contract it will be worth the energy to care about it.  Until then, big meh.

And by the time they need to make that decision - it becomes far more palatable.

They're not ALL going to work out. That's unrealistic. If it happened, well great, too many good players what a dilemma . More likely some will be good, some will need more time, some will become marginal players or role players, and some will be AHL only. I really don't think we are overflowing just yet, more like just back to what is normal.

As they age out though - it will get pretty crowded in rochester.  Plus you may sign or trade for other pieces.

I read the article as well  While I agree generally that Skinner is unlikely to keep scoring 30goals and 60 points for the remaining length of this contract, I can see Skinner, who has been incredibly durable during his career, still be very effective into his early 30s.  I do go look at Pominville as a reference point.  After 30 he had seasons of 60, 54, 36, 47, 34 and 31 points, and retired following his 36 year old season.  I suspect Skinner, if used properly, will exceed those numbers.  So while I agree Skinner is overpaid, he's not going to be overpaid by 35 million over the next 5 years.

That's said, now you know why I hate really long contracts.

He's a solid skater, good shooter, decent on the walls, draws penalties, and doesn't rely on straight speed.  He just seems to know how to get to areas to score goals be it rebounds, one timers, whatever.  He's also not PP dependent at all which boosts his value a bit.

I don't mind a long contract if I'm buying out RFA years.  Usually you get a discount there.  But it was a poor decision to give skinner that term, with that salary - while never scoring more than 63 points in his career.  2M more AAV, and 4 more years than Pacioretty (admittedly coming off a poor year there, but), but pacioretty has some additional value at the defensive side of the ice and kills penalties.  Kucherov got 9.5M AAV for 8 years - but he had arb eligibility left.

I'm not sure how they arrived at that number.  He put up 63 points last year including 30+ goals.  At a minimum that $100k per point, that's 6.3 mill per season.  So with 5 years left on his deal he is currently overpaid by at most 3 mill per season or 15 million total.

I have an athletic subscription and read the article and im still not sure i understand it 🙂. From what i can tell they put him at a 47 point pace to split the difference between last year at 2.1 wins and the year before at basically 0.  They then forecasted some age related deterioration.

Krebs won't be moved for a few years even if he's not good because of the optics. He will get the longest and biggest chance to make his mark.

But none of those 3 get moved any time soon imo.

I still believe Girgensens and Okposo will be moved at the deadline if we are not in playoff contention. I know some of you want him as captain. I still think this though.

I could envision a scenario where if Buffalo is already out of contention...Okposo is traded to a contender for a playoff run, but then re-signs with Buffalo in the off-season.

I'd say ok, but we have drafted a LOT of players the last couple of years.  10 picks in the first 2 rounds (6 1sts) over 3 drafts, plus they have another 1st and 3 2nd's in 2023.  Running out of space for all the younger players so we'll see how they want to approach.  I suppose they could add some 2024 and 2025 picks to just keep that pipeline full as seasons go along.

It seems to me that people are so starved for any shining light they're willing to back the brinks truck up to anybody who shows them any glimmer at all. Thompson, a year ago almost everybody proclaiming him a bust and repeating over and over how JBot got fleeced in the ROR trade. Now, after ONE good season pay him like a top flight NHL star. Just ridiculous. He has to prove it.

I read above wanting to pay Cozens like Cirelli as a comparable. How has he done anything remotely close to what Cirelli has done??? Somebody already wanted to start dumping money at Power when he hasn't even played a season.

You're all looking to get Skinner'd.

I watched probably 50-60 games this year and my opinion is that Thompson was head and shoulders our best forward.  I think there might be a shooting regression a bit - but he definitely transformed his game offensively.  He should be at least looking at something like Sam Reinharts contract AAV - for term as he'd be 26 at signing time 4-6 years would be ideal.

Have seen this on one of the other AHL deals, but really not sure what they mean by him having a higher "guaranteed" value than his minor league salary.  Might have to check around on CF to figure out what they mean.

I'm not totally sure either.  My speculation is the AHL salary is divided by the games on the AHL roster and vice versa for NHL - the guarantee must be a bonus or something to the AHL number in some way.

At even strength, he went from 1.4pt/60 to 1.6pts/60 so he's got some work to do. I think a line of Asplund - Cozens - someone else would be very good.

I'd expect 50pts for Cozens as reasonable. Typically the 3rd year is when you see a jump for players but we'll see.

I'm hoping he figures out that hybrid 2-way forward this year.  Need that FO% to jump up a lot, and to win more important draws with eakin gone.

As for points, i'd be disappointed if its sub-50, and sub-20 goals.

  11. i think Hino stays with cozens, and mitts gets VO or Tuch (I'd lean tuch).  That will generally result in a few more points as both VO and Tuch score more points.  I think from a gameplay standpoint though - quinn on the cozens line makes a lot of sense.  I'd probably run asplund with girgs and okposo, and krebs with mitts and tuch.

We have not been here.  In 2015, we may have had a good prospect pool but the actual team had nothing .5 or 6 players and a bunch of scrubs

Now , it seems we have a legit NHL roster and a prospect pool over-flowing with talent

Optimism about the future is rightfully sky high at the moment

Also a lot of misses in that pool.  Yes you had Eichel and Reinhart.  You also had Bailey, Baptiste, Fasching.  Then a huge whiff on nylander in 2016... UGH.  Sergachev, Mcavoy, Chychrun the next 3 d-men off the board.

They moved Zadorov, Compher, Armia - and other players - plus 2 1st round picks and the 1st pick of the 2nd... to get that 2015 roster together.

I don't trust Miller who performed 27 points better than his previous high to repeat that again.

Most likely he just posted his career best stat line, they are going to ask a lot for him...some team is going to be suckered into "buying at the peak"

I don't see us in on miller.  If we were in the mix at the deadline? Maybe?  But even then its going to cost a high value prospect (krebs or cozens) and picks.

  14. Caps have guys they can put on LTIR.  Vegas has weber. Tampa will do something weird to get under.

Florida will need to do something though.  Philly is floating JVR (expiring on a 7M deal and they want assets) and Provorov (LHD we dont need).  Vancouver seems set to move JT miller (expiring on a reasonable deal, but coming off a 99pt year thats going to cost buffalo more than a mittelstadt).

Unfortunately, it seems that analytics has ruined baseball.  The hitters became focused on launch angles to hit home runs.  Prior to this season, it became a game of home runs and strikeouts.  Now, the change in the baseball has resulted in many of the recent big HR hitters just flying out but also still striking out a lot.  Zzzzzzz!

Hey - i've notice the guardians seem to be leaning the opposite direction.  Grab players with some speed/athleticism, play to your platoon strengths, don't strike out, drive up pitch counts and get on base.

I hear you, I was a contact hitter, singles and doubles, place the ball in the gaps. I had some power but hated the walk to the dugout after striking out.

I was small growing up so i tended to be the same way.  Then around junior year i filled out a little and learned how to drive the ball into the gaps and definitely started getting more selective with what i'd swing at. I probably struck out more my junior and senior year than all the other years combined.

Are there situations where you choke up a bit and try and just put it in play?  Sure.  But blasting a homer is a good all-situation play 🙂

Kids need to fill out. Drafting 16 year olds will lead to this. I was 120 pounds soaking wet at 16.  I graduated college at 190.

At age 19 i was 5'7 140 lbs and ate pizza and cheeseburgers every day.  I could've eaten til it hurt and it wouldn't have mattered.

Get him with a nutritionist - and get him on a workout plan.  He'll be fine.  Its the hockey part that we should worry about.

Did we? Lazar sure would of been better than Hayden in the line up, but whatever

Yeah.  Curtis Lazar would've really put this team over the top.

Yes, he is.  But rather than play in CA while waiting for a chance to play Div I at Arizona State, he chose to play at Sioux Falls while waiting to become a Golden Gopher at Minnesota.  He's shown that he sees value in playing in a hockey hotbed.  So, just because he grew up in Irvine, there is no reason, based upon his past history, to believe he would necessarily rather be near dear old dad over playing for Adams crew in wintry WNY.

His father is an assistant coach with the Ontario Reign, and he followed in dad's footsteps at Minnesota.  I believe he was drafted by Sioux Falls into the USHL. There's definitely some smoke to the fire here.  And it'd be naive to think otherwise.

When watching this game it becomes evident that difference between winning and losing is not great. As others have stated the score didn't reflect how this game was played. Ultimately, the quality chances we had were not converted; the fewer quality chances they had were converted. The Blues are a well rounded veteran team. Even when the tide was working against them they continued to play their game.

When discussing the goalie situation its like beating a dead horse, over and over again. This game is an example of what the difference is between good goalie play and average to below average goalie play. When there is a discussion about what the options are this offseason to upgrade the position most of them are unappealing. I don't know what the solution is. What I do know until that issue is satisfactorily addressed this team will not become a serious team. Anyone who is fair-minded has to acknowledge that the roster is steadily being upgraded. That positive step will be undercut until the goalie position is solidified.

Team needs a goalie who can steal more games.  And the defense in front needs to be better.

They are 2-32-5 when they give up more than 4 goals.  39 of 76 games we've given up 4 or more goals.  That is awful.

    42 games where the PDO (Shooting% + SV%) was below 100.  I feel like 100 shouldn't even be that difficult, that's 3 goals on 30 shots and the same .900 sv%.

They can generate some offense but we still stink at shooting.  The defense could do more to block shots and generally help the goalies out.  And the goaltending this year has been some of the worst in the league.

Skater stats: 25th in goals per game, 23rd in shooting%, 18th in PP%, 25th in PK%, #1 in shootout goal percentage.

Goalie stats: 25th in GAA, 25th in SV%, 31st in Shootout SV% (leaving points on the table there), tied for last in shutouts.

This game easily could have been 5-5 or even having the Sabres won. So many point blank chances they missed...out shot the Blues 69-41 overall.

They outplayed them, outworked them and were buzzing around in the Blue's end much of the game. Nothing to be upset about with the performance, Bennington made some great saves and they got some bad bounces.

They'll win 8 of the 10 times they play like they did tonight...it just happened to be one of the two others they don't.

Worked us on the PP, and they scored their point blank chances.  We either shot them into pads or just flat out missed the net.
