Whatever I guess, but Granato's post game presser seemed to suggest more information would be coming early this week.  Fast forward to the "family issues" comment, seems like he could have just as easily said that in the post game presser vs. waiting 2 or three 3 days to give us a nothing burger.

In other words, he injected more potential drama than he needed to.  Completely unnecessary if you ask me....unless the family issues is made up.

Or perhaps he was waiting for Krebs to give the OK on talking about it at all.

The guy’s known for his power play abilities. They couldn’t even give him a chance given how bad the PP has been this season? Please. 😒

The power play's struggles have largely been gaining the zone.  I don't see how he's going to help you gain the zone, and i'd suspect the second he touched the puck that the PK is going to pressure him into a turnover.

Patrick Kane has entered the chat😜

Can he enter the chat next year?  Once Oloffson, Girgs, Okposo, and Jost are likely all off the books?

Might be nice to have a veteran winger on a line with a younger player.  Truly depends on how he looks after hip surgery though.

    Skinner-thompson-tuch

    JJP-Cozens-quinn

    Kane-Mitts-Savoie/Benson

    Greenway-Savoie/Benson-Kulich

Even then you still have no space for Krebs and Rosen.  At the same time, a healthy kane is better than krebs and rosen at putting the puck in the back of the net.  You could start Savoie or Benson in the AHL potentially.  This lineup doesn't contain a defensive line or anything either.

Dahlin, Muel, R.Johnson, Power, Clifton, Joker on defense.  I think there's space to upgrade here.. goalie is pretty obvious too.

He has 5 games to go.   I don’t see him quitting in the middle of the season. I hope he stays because no one else deserves the C right now.  Platooning him makes sense though and should be done now.

Who deserves the C is the next question.

    Dahlin?

You’re not gonna get any argument with me. Krebs has broken out of his turnover machine habits, but he has appeared to a level off as a JAG.

He may be a better player someday, but that may show on his sixth NHL team.

He doesn't shoot well or often enough to be anywhere near a teams top 6.  He brings some juice and forecheck/backcheck that you want to see in a bottom 6 forward, but the lack of any scoring touch is going to hurt him even if he has some playmaking chops.  Playmaking chops don't go that far when the shooters are guys like Girgs and Okposo.

I enjoy advanced stats. Using them for single game evaluations can be misleading though. Goals saved above expected really does not work as a single game stat. To begin with, you can’t give up 1.26 goals in a game. If you face a Jack Hughes breakaway the first shot of a game and are scored on you will be negative on goals saves above expected. Doesn’t really tell you much other than you got scored on by Jack Hughes. Also, UPL faced 22 shots against NJ in only 28 minutes. Vanicek saw 27 shots over 60. Workload matters. What was the team corsi over the 28 minutes UPL played against NJ?

I was listening to the new Expected Buffalo podcast last night. They are not UPL fans. They glossed over Levi’s poor start, largely blaming it on how the Sabres managed his workload (I agree that they overused Levi to start the year, but can also acknowledge he has been below average in performance through his four games). Then they proceeded to pick apart individual goals that UPL gave up while labeling people who defend him as “UPL-lovers”. I don’t see a lot of people blindly loving or defending UPL. I mostly see that some of us want to put in context that he is a young goalie who for most of his NHL career has not enjoyed the luxury of a stable defensive environment in front of him. At the start of the season the Sabres were the league’s youngest team by average age at 25.5 (per capfriendly). UPL is a year younger than our average age, playing a position where it is universally understood that development takes longer. Some of us just think there is a good goalie in there and want to give the kid a break.

Just watching UPL the last couple games:

He's still huge.  Cover's a lot of space just being big and i think it helps a lot on PP's when they have you moving side to side

Rebound control has improved - seems to be kicking them off to the walls much better than before

Puck playing - still a work in progress.  Improvement here helps the defensemen get the puck moving out of the zone more effectively

Levi on the other hand has struggled with both rebounds and puck playing.  He's quick as hell and definitely can make some of the harder saves.  He did get hung out to dry to start the year i felt as we were giving up a lot of slot chances and that's usually on forwards and back-checking.  All the line jumbling in preseason seemed to harm some of the cohesion to start the year, and some players like thompson and tuch started really slow.

And the league has rescinded the one game suspension for tkachuk. What a joke league. And nothing for the two cheap shots.

It's alright - that reckless style is fun to watch.  Gets under teams skin.  Great for playoffs.

But Brady and Matt for that matter, will both eventually break down faster than the average skill player.

Exactly, give Cozens and Tarasenko 2 each for roughing and call it a day.

Minimum is to give Tarasenko 2 for the shot at Okposo and let the rest go.

My view is you give Tarasenko 4 and Cozens 2.

Just send them both for 2 and a misconduct or something.  Basically saying "cut it out"

The Sabres got tired about halfway through the 2nd period, just like the Islanders did when we played them on a back to back.   We had a 3-0 lead but the momentum swing was all Sens.

The Sens scored at the 13:14 mark of the second and they had huge pressure on us, dominating several long shifts in our zone.  UPL made a few big stops in this flurry, right when we really needed it.  Then the Sabres (Tuch) finally got one on the PP, then Tage got the late tip in, 5-1 game over.

About halfway through the third things got ugly with Tuch and Tkachuck.  The refs missed (more like let go) a blatant charging/roughing by Tkachuk on Tuch, leading to a retaliation by Tuch - which they called and they got them both for fighting.  The officials were the reason the game got stupid.

The next group of penalties was very troubling.  Tarasenko roughed KO after the whistle leading to a response by Cozens.  Cozens ended up with 4 mins of roughing and 10 mins for misconduct and they even got Benson for 2 minutes.  We never got the straight penalty story from blabbering Ray and Dan - they were terrible once again, but we ended up on the PK which seemed to defy logic from what actually happened.

It seemed like the Sens had the PP for most of the last 3 or 4 minutes of the game and they got a few cheap goals on scrambles in front of the net.  We have to keep our composure.   With Tuch and Cozens out for the game we just need to protect the 5-2 lead.

Fatigue, the crowd, the fights, whatever - we have to do better in these times - that was playoff intensity in the last half of the 3rd.

Thankfully Tage made a few nice moves to get control of the puck on the PK and he flipped the clincher in.  That was a very big EN goal and I am glad Tage got it because he has been working hard to get his game going.

Overall an excellent road win on a B2B for us.   We corrected some things from the Montreal game.  We gave UPL a lot of support, we are playing like a team again, team defense is getting better the last few games, and a few more guns are starting to fire.

The addition of Johnson and Clifton, plus the reclamation of Greenway and all of a sudden we have some physical presence to go with Cozens and Tuch.

Bring on the Lindy and the Devils.

Absolutely terrible officiating at the end of the game.  You rewarded a team for cheap shots... to me I just give out equal roughing penalties.

I base my estimates on the Ticketmaster seating charts. How many blue dots (unsold seats) are there? For the Lightning game, more than half the upper deck was unsold.

One huge change you see now, are very few pink dots (resale tickets.) When there were more season ticket holders, they were dumping tickets for $6. People got used to paying those prices. Now you're paying box office prices. Sticker shock.

My buddy is a ticket broker, and another broker who used to work for the Sabres would buy... a ton of seats and re-sell them.  The key was because he was doing such volume that the Sabres were basically selling them for 30 cents on the dollar.   That guy lists them - probably makes money on some, and on others he'd just dump them for the minimum.  I forget the name of the guy the Sabres fired, but after that they adjusted their ticket model considerably and stopped giving seats away.

It really de-valued the product at the end of the day, and people were shocked when they couldn't pick up a ticket for 10 bucks on the day of.  Also thousands of season tickets opened up mysteriously at the same time.

I know I am going to get killed for this but I also don't like Mighty Taco.  Chipotle and Moe's any day of the week over that place for me. Honestly, I think Taco Bell is better than Mighty Taco and way cheaper.

The only taco bell in amherst is such a terrible location.  Regularly leaving food off of my order (almost seems intentional at this point).

Where's the best Mexican food in Buffalo and what's your go to item?

Going with Maizal on transit, east Amherst, and they have a brunch burrito that's amazing. My wife though loves their chimichangas.

I got the tlayuda there and it was very good.

Gramma Mora's started on Niagara Street. First time I went was in the mid-80s (?). And it appeared that Gramma was working in the kitchen. That place was legit - at least as far as my young culinary standards were concerned. At some point around when they moved to Hertel, the restaurant was bought out by an Italian-American family that was in the restaurant operations business. We used to laugh because there was a period of time -- maybe it's still the case? -- when a Mexican-American family was running an Italian/red sauce/pizza joint across the street on Hertel.

As for El Palenque: I went a few times and will not go back. That was place was (is?) dirty. And the food was decidedly mid.

I've come to conclude that they're using that place as a front for illegal activities - money laundering or some such. It has endured, yet it is not good. The location is very good. Maybe that has something to do with it.

    That's accurate nowadays.

Gramma Mora's on Niagara Street was so damn good.

Wouldnt shock me.  I lived right over there for like 3 years and i feel like there were never cars there in the front.

I'm lucky I don't drink, those prices are crazy! 😬

Usually go to Pearl Street prior to Sabres/Bandit games and just walk there. used to be nice when I worked at HSBC across the street and I would just go park in the lot for free right up close to the front and literally walk 50 feet across the street to the Keybank Center doors.

I usually park in the lot on perry and walk to ballyhoo.  Sausage and mac and cheese will do a body good.

I don’t care if they keep the alignment same as last year, but gat damn they need another play besides pass around and see if someone leaves Tage open for the one-timer.

It's insanely frustrating.  Not quite as frustrating as watching olofsson get smothered on the wall when he's out there, but still frustrating.

I'd like to see dahlin shoot more to help break up the opposing team structure, get some rebounds, make them chase.  And I'd also like to see a behind the net play with someone like tuch or cozens because they're going to take that Tage pass 99x out of 100, which should give you a window to try and attack from the high slot.

It’s just preseason, but I think:

    - Benson is the real deal.

    - Mitts is not a #2C and Greenway-Mitts-Tuch did not work last night as a second line.

    - Comrie is better than UPL.

    - Rosen and especially Kulich are not ready and the Sabres were right to send them down.

    - Ryan Johnson isn’t ready either but has a lot of game on both ends and has top-4 potential.

    - The team overall doesn’t seem focused and determined.

Which... hard to motivate people when the game doesn't matter at all and the crowds absolutely dead.

    21 minutes ago, Pimlach said:

    - Benson looks good so far and earned his 9 games, AND maybe more.

    - Too early to say anything about Mitts but I do think Cozens is the real 2C, he just needs a steady line.  Last year he played with 2 rookies and he moved around a lot.

    - Greenway has not impressed me yet.  I just don't see much effort.

    - Comrie or UPL - they are both below average.  Goaltending will continue to be an issue - I fear that not enough was done at this position and everything hangs a rookie.

    -  Kulich, Rosen, R Johnson are really good prospects but we cannot absorb them right now and win.  They need time in the "A" to start the season, then we see how things progress and if any of them fit and fill a need.

You last point is my only major disagreement.   Maybe they are not yet focused but its it too early to say.  They carried a big roster all preseason and they looked at a lot of people.  We could start slow because of it and it could take a few weeks for the real team to get going.  We will need everyone on the team to stay together and keep working.

This is supposed to be a playoff run, the season is a marathon, not a sprint.

Agreed - i hope they don't wait to make a move if something opens up.

That could work, letting Joki be more of a puck mover while Mule holds down the fort.
The flip side is can EJ handle the workload of 2nd pairing?

Then you just need to find your PK pairings.

Assuming you keep power and johnson as one, that'd leave maybe muel and clifton as the other with Dahlin as a floater if any of them are in the box.

That appears to confirm that VO is being given every opportunity to win Quinns spot while he’s out.

    Tuchs gotta be hurt, right?

And I continue to not like Power-Joki

I wonder if they're rotating Johnson in there in practices.  If they split Samuelsson from Dahlin to go L-R, i wonder how joker would play with Muel.

Not really. I have this gut feeling that this is really in the works. Maybe I'm wrong, but I see it maybe more as marketing than anything else but I see it happening. Even if he's not that great it turns the conversation league wide and media wide.

He's not ready to play though.  He's recovering from hip surgery which has ended some careers already.  So while possible, i don't think anyone's signing him until he has shown to be recovered from the surgery.

I'm a guardians fan, even with the MLB package i wouldn't get their games as i'm "in market".

I have the 2nd highest fios package for channels (because i wanted MSG), and i don't even know what channel i would need or if its on the highest package.
